This one had an interesting twist with a person watching his whole life change before his eyes. I got the urge to shout "WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY" every few minutes over the wrongness of that logic, but it was still entertaining. :D

On the plus side: a shark pulling a sleigh. HA!!

Another on the plus side: Amy and Rory dress up! *SNORTS*

On the down side: Eleven was SO VERY DUMB MOST OF THE TIME. GAH. I don't mind the absent-minded professor bit, but there were so many stupid moments in this episode. The Doctor is not stupid! I just can't tell you how many times I was getting irked about this.

Also, I assume that the woman was some famous singer? No clue. Don't care.

Side note: there was some bit in there somewhere about Amy telling the Doctor not to lie to her since she's not an idiot, and then turns around and lies to Rory. That gag might be funnier if Rory wasn't the only sane person in this crew.

Heh. Flying sharks.

Yes, Katherine Jenkins, a very well known Welsh soprano. I guess it's sort of a follow up to having Kylie Minogue, a famous Australian singer, on a previous Christmas special.

I too hate it when they make the doctor dumb for no apparent reason. He may be absent minded, he may not explain things when you want him to, but he's ANYTHING but stupid.

He's brilliant! And he should always be 25 steps ahead of everyone!

... (an hour into SITL/FOTD) ...

DOCTOR
You're not in a forest, you're in a library. There are no trees in a... (realisation dawning on him) library.

((facepalm-headdesk-facepalm))

You know, there is actually a Wiggles skit about books being made from paper which is made from trees. So even my preschooler is well aware of this concept. This is the main problem I have with Moffat's Doctor.

Good WAH or bad WAH? I'm guessing bad WAH? I don't think there's a good WAH XD

Bad wah.

[identity profile] chiroho.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
And he should always be 25 steps ahead of everyone!

Which, IMO, is often why he seems so absent minded - he's already thinking so far past where everyone else is, he doesn't realise at times that he needs to go back and explain things. Or gets what he was thinking and what he is thinking confused.

(only using this icon bc it's the only Abigail one I have uploaded atm XD)

ITA with everything you said. Question for you (I ask only bc this received a lot of flak from some fans as being OOC for the Doctor) - what did you think about Eleven not releasing the other cryogenically frozen people?

All in all, I liked the special, mainly I think because it showed some characterization and much-needed emotional depth for Eleven. Plus I got an excuse to ship Rose/Eleven with the whole one last day with your beloved line. I'm not a Moffat fan, so my expectations were pretty low going in, but I tried to keep an open mind and ended up enjoying it!

Maybe he thought the reformed old guy would then release them? Or maybe it happened but we just didn't see it?

But unfortunately the emotional depth flew by me on this one. Right along with the shark. ZOOM!

He was really dumb. Did he never notice the numbers after the first time? Did he never think about why the kid suddenly wanted nothing to do with him anymore? AND FURTHERMORE. Did Kazran free all the frozen people after the end of the episode, or what?

I was very glad they didn't kill the shark. It was upsetting when it was dying on the roof. Sniff.

This bugged me SO MUCH. I know part of the Doctor's personality is that he botches emotional stuff, but seriously he's not that clueless. Times like this make me feel like he's regenerated into his slightly stupider cousin Doug.

AND FURTHERMORE. Did Kazran free all the frozen people after the end of the episode, or what?

Hopefully? :D

I was glad too. Poor shark.

I totally had the same "windmill" reaction. It was a cute story, but soooo against the Doctor Who rules!!!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
XD Darn that time logic!!

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
I liked this episode the first time I saw it. But the more I think about it, the more annoyed it makes me. THE TARDIS HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED IN A SERIES OF EVENTS. WHY IS THE DOCTOR ABLE TO USE IT TO SCREW AROUND WITH DUMBLEORE'S PAST? ALSO, OLD!DUMBLEDORE TOUCHED HIS YOUNGER SELF. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN.

Also, NEEDS MOAR RORY.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
My theory of the minute is that crazy!Ten genocided the Reapers just for the LOLZ.

[identity profile] mornea.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! Oh the things Crazy!Ten must have done! We need more fanfics about this. I mean.. just look at your avatar above. He did lots, you just know it. What a bad boy.

I actually think the problem with the reapers is, as was said in Father's Day, Rose messed with time without knowing what she was doing. The doctor knows what he's doing. Sort of.

LOL THIS WHOLE EPISODE

I don't know why I hated it so much. I mean, it is harmless enough. But just, the whole thing. What did you do, Moffat.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm torn on this episode. There were plenty of cute bits, but there were also plenty of irks.

[identity profile] pluckyyounggirl.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
He copy and pasted TGITF, except Reinette = Dumbledore and Rose & Mickey on a spaceship away from the action and in danger = Amy & Rory on a space ship away from the action and in danger.* And once I realised that, it actually explained a lot of my hatred.

(Plus you know the whole bit where the man locks the woman away in a cabinet and only takes her out for his pleasure whenever it suits him and in the end, the old cranky git gets the beautiful girl. OMG I AM SO OFFENDED BY THIS EPISODE I CAN'T EVEN.)

*Disclaimer: I did not come up with that myself, but rather read it somewhere, but can't recall where. It are the truth, though.

LOL I loved this special.

It makes no sense but somehow I still found it fun and entertaining. And it had flying fish. I'm never going to not love that.

It's horribly flawed and very timey-wimey (like every episode of Moffat's that's not TEC/TDD) but I still really enjoyed it. I'd love for Moffat's Doctor to smarten up, though.

IDK, I wasn't really looking for anything deep. I was just kind of happy to have a Christmas special that I found fun.

And I had totally called Amy/ Rory's sect honeymoon times with the outfits.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The fish were totally the best bit! Awwww fishies! :D And I did think that the projector/changing history was neat.

[identity profile] mornea.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
It was an interesting story, but once again I felt I was watching a cartoon doctor.
I had no reason to care about the other characters-- and I had trouble caring, except for very young Kazran. The woman had a beautiful voice, and I picked up all the "Silence" songs. But this, like so much of series five, is just missing that character 'something'.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, cartoon Doctor was back. I think I might not have minded too much if he hadn't had so many stupid moments as well.

[identity profile] fid-gin.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Heeee. I love Morbo. One of my most oft-used phrases is "Belligerent and numerous!"

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
XD Morbo is pleased but sticky.

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
My problem with this season, as I've said to others, the doctor should be brillian about all things science but slightly clueless about cultrural things.

But there's too many times he's portrayed as stoopid scientifically which is not the same as clueless culturally.

I hope they fix this error next season...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
And there are even times when he's not that dumb about cultural things as well. At least if the past Doctors are anything to go by.

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Each Doctor has had his own level of how smart he was about different cultures. Ten weemed to have an almost "too good" of feel for it. I would have preferred a little less competence in that respect. But with Eleven, they've swung way too much ot the other side. I think some type of middle ground would make a lot of people happy...
