You know that meme where someone describes a show they don't watch, simply based on reading their flist?




So there are two vampire brothers, and they like to lurk at a high school. As creepy pervert vampires do. Actually, I think enrolling in high school is part of the whole eternal damned mythology.



There are three main people. There's the good vampire who's a vegan or something. He doesn't eat people. But maybe dogs? (Calling the ASPCA.) He's sort of the weenie vampire.

Then there's the girl who apparently is awesome, but not quite awesome enough to get the hell away from the fucking vampires.

And finally there is the bad boy vampire who does eat people. And because he has manpain he gets a pass on raping and murdering and so on. ISSUES, MAN.

There is a giant fandom war about who the girl will be with, which is slightly refreshing since often shows are about who will win the Penis of Awesome. Anyway, I think the show wants the good vampire and the books want the bad vampire...or something. I still want her to get the hell away from the fucking vampires.



There are lots of carnivals for some reason. Good underage fun.



And there might be werewolves? I'm not 100%, but generally where there are vampires, werewolves are hanging around.

Hahaha, this is actually incredibly accurate! (She did TRY to get away from the vampires originally, which I appreciated. But that sort of gave way to, "BUT THE GOOD ONE IS SUCH A HUMANBOY." Meh.)

And there are werewolves now, yes. And THERE'S ALWAYS A FREAKIN' CARNIVAL. And why? Why is there always an event in this town? I live in an historical part of the south. We do not have festivals like this all the time.

I SHOULD PROBABLY JUST LET THIS GO but instead I feel the need to inform you that, in fact, the show has been pretty good at showing that Elena is in Deep Vampire Stuff beyond her Vampire Boyfriend because she is needed for some weird-ass sacrifice ritual and also her birth mum is a vampire and her birth dad is a vampire hunter and apparently also both her parents were vampire hunters SO YOU SEE HER SLIDE IN THAT WORLD WAS INEVITABLE ANYWAY. Plus she is the only one on that show who still does not have a superpower unless you count the Power To Hug People With Empathy and at some point aside from the Vampire Boyfriend(s) she probably would have noticed the werewolves and witches in her town.

That last paragraph just destroyed my childhood. I was a big fan of the books back in the 90's, when I was a teenager, and that doesn't sound anything like what I remember.

When I heard the show was in production, I found my well-worn copies of the books and tried to reread them, with the intention of giving the show a shot, but I gave up after about three pages because I couldn't stand Elena now that I'm an adult. I tried to watch the pilot episode, but my family was visiting that evening and I couldn't concentrate; it seemed silly. I'd like to see the pilot episode again sometime because, to be honest, I haven't a clue what happened in it anymore.

I was thinking the other day how it's always one mortal girl and two immortal guys of some sort, and I'm like, how about a show about a sexy immortal lady who wants to hit a skinny, pretty haired teenaged guy? But then I realized it's because if it was a guy in the middle of these triangles, they'd take all the dramarama away by being ridiculously easy no matter how nice a fellow he is. STILL THOUGH.

Okay earlier today I was at a VERY SERIOUS PTSD conference where I was being bad and reading LJ on my iPad. I read this post and... I LAUGHED at what was apparently an inappropriate moment. A very important speaker (I know this because he had lots of letters after his name, and was certain to read them all to us since those of us crammed into the hard little chairs were obviously not as important and therefore might not have been intelligent enough to determine his importance on our own) was saying something completely life changing, or so it seems- I can't be sure of this because I wasn't really paying attention.

So I had to hit the 'note' app to make it look like I was taking notes and began to fake cough to cover my oops. Possibly I deserve an Oscar for my acting. All of this to say this is possibly the BEST POST EVER. :)

I like the show and all, but just once I wish someone would write a book or TV show where the heroine does keep away from the vampires except to fight them, instead of falling in love with them. Or fights them, without keeping one for a pet (like Buffy did with Angel and then Spike.) Or you know, chooses the sane, human boy that doesn't consider her a snack food.
