Star Wars...nothing but Star Wars...
September 21: to buy the Star Wars DVDs or not to buy, that is the question. You see, the films have been *messed with.* You'd think that once the film has hit the theaters, the editing process would be finished. Turns out you can keep at it for a good 27 years. Good to know. I'm just glad I bought the video tape box set of the original way back when.
The only thing to make me slightly sympathetic to Lucas and his re-editing ways was a special on A&E this past weekend Empire of Dreams. I thought it was going to be another puff piece on how wonderful Star Wars is, show a few bloopers, etc. Stuff I've seen a million times before. This actually had a little more insight than I've seen - about the studio problems, money issues, rights issues, Lucas leaving the Director's Guild, production woes, Campbell's myth structure for the plot, etc. I accidentally found the show while flipping through the channels and was hooked. It made me actually feel for Lucas - it really made me understand that his vision for the movie was much bigger than the technology of the time. We'll, they created the technology of the day and eventually ran out of time/money.
But still, stop changing the movie! Or at least have an option on the DVD to watch the original or the updated version.
At least they didn't change the blasters to walkie talkies.
