Museum Stuff

Looks like I might be going to The Getty sometime in the next few days. Haven't been there in a few years. I can't remember if they've got a modern art building or not. (ETA: Oh, well if I'd read wiki. It says they don't collect 20th-21st century art really. Nuts.)

I've got a thing for modern art. Older works of art - painting and sculptures are nice to look at, but usually just get a "pretty!" response from me. Maybe if I could appreciate brushwork, I'd like it better.

But modern art - I go through a wide range of reactions. "I could *totally* do that." "The hell?!" "Huh." "COOL!" "Is that art or did someone leave a cup on a chair?" And you just never know what you're going to get when you round a corner. Could be a 40-foot hot dog meant to represent indifference in society, or it could be a mound of wadded up newspaper...meant to represent indifference in society.

Probably the coolest exhibit I've seen was one with mechanical engineering-type sculptures at the MIT museum in Cambridge. They dripped oil! And had gears! Oh, also cool - a giant tree drum at LACMA. *geeks out*

But anyway, The Getty. Maybe I can take some photos of stolen artwork...
