Random blah blah blah.
So I'm finally alone again. Phew.
I probably will never brine a turkey in a bag again. DAMN YOU LAWS OF PHYSICS! Naturally the bag spread out as I had nothing to contain it. So it kind of just brined one side of the turkey. The important side. And it didn't get flipped at any time. YOU try wrestling a giant 20 pound bag that would probably shoot across the floor if given the opportunity!
The turkey took 3 and a half hours to cook. I'm thinking that's not exactly normal for a 13 pound bird. And when we took it out of the oven, the temp didn't continue to rise. We probably ate mutant bird or something. But it was actually cooked perfectly - not pink and not overcooked. \o/ A bit on the salty side - I'd probably cut the salt in half next time. (And get a bucket.)
We went to go see the Dead Sea Scrolls on Friday morning. I'm glad we went early. You had to get tickets ahead of time and they were only letting 100 people in at a time, but there was no limit on the amount of time you could spend in the exhibits, so it got more and more packed as time went on.
It was really interesting, and made my inner nerd squee a lot. One thing that surprised me was that they were really small. The print was tiny. I'm assuming that they shrunk to some extent over the centuries, but they didn't say how much. The one with the Ten Commandments on it was probably 4 inches high.
Also something that was VERY cool was the Copper Scroll that was on display. Talk about straight out of Indiana Jones! It talks about lost treasure that no one's ever been able to find! OOOOOOOOH!
Also also of interest - you know David and Goliath? Goliath was only about 6 and a half feet tall according to the Dead Sea Scrolls, and that whole giant thing was because some scribe in early who-knows-what-century copied the number down wrong, making him 9 feet, which had been perpetuated all this time. Well, *I* thought that was interesting.
And for my dork moment, for some reason they hand-stamped us. Twice. Once through security and once by the ticket area. And so I was looking at the stamp: SDNHM. What could this be? Some sort of cool Hebrew or Aramaic word? It wasn't until I was through the first exhibit that I realized it stood for San Diego Natural History Museum. Yeah.
We were driving around this morning and on the way back to my place we saw the familiar smoke on the hills in the distance. Shit. We're having Santa Ana winds, and so obviously there must be fires. BAH. Fortunately they were able to keep it under control. I think - seems pretty managed right now. Also, something called the "Haverford Fire" just doesn't have the sex appeal of the "Witch Fire," and so will probably not turn into a major disaster...right? And poor Malibu. Okay, definitely done with this kind of weather now, thanks.
