DW: Survival

Survival (Seven, Ace)
  • Very last classic TV episode ever. I didn't know it was a Master one until the DVD menu (yeesh, thanks for ruining the surprise there), but seems a bit fitting the last one's a Master ep.

  • I have no idea why the Cheetah People wound up on Earth. There was something about only being able to go "home" and so no clue how they wound up there in the first place. Also, I'm not sure why the Master didn't hop over to Gallifrey the second he started to turn, since obviously he could control it unlike others. The Doctor did it himself later on, taking him back to the TARDIS. (Awwwww.) Or maybe the Master's home is the Joe's Crab Shack in Lawrenceville, New Jersey these days, but he still should have been able to figure out getting off the planet first. Or...hopped a ride with one of the kitties? However, other plot holes aside, after being traumatized by the last two Seven eps – The Curse of Fenric and Ghost Light – this episode is actually linear!! So... \o/

  • The beginning of this episode reminded me a lot of the beginning to "Fear Her." Quiet street, people vanishing, and even cats. :D This time around Ace is the one babbling on while the Doctor's the one noticing all the missing people.

  • The Doctor takes Ace home for a visit. She wants to try and find her friends, and doesn't care much about hearing that her family's declared her missing – doesn't care in a very emo 16-year-old way, not that she's oblivious. Seems like they were starting to do more involved character stuff with Ace than they had ever really done with any other companions.

  • The Doctor arrives on the scene and the Master immediately starts obsessing about him.

Master: I've been a very naughty boy. I think someone needs a spanking.
    Doctor: WTF?

Master: See this tree? I planted it for you. It's dead now.
    Doctor: Erm...

Master: And this carving depicts the first time you punished me for all eternity. *sighs* Lovely, isn't it?
    Doctor: NUT. JOB.

Master: You're not the Doctor! God, what did I do last night?

Master: Mirror, mirror on the wall, who loves the Doctor most of all? HATE! I said hate! You all totally heard it!

Master: I am going to chintz the hell out of this place.
    Doctor: ...

Master: "Seems we must always meet again."
Doctor: "They do say that opposites attract."
Me: *SPORFLES* You really should stop encouraging him, Doctor.

  • Awwwww! See, now this is a paternal-type relationship. And an adorable one at that.

  • The final scene of the classic TV series:

    "Where to now, Ace?"

    "Home."

    "Home?"

    "The TARDIS."

"Yes. The TARDIS. There are worlds out there where they sky is burning, where the sea's asleep and the rivers dream. People made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger. Somewhere there's injustice. Somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to do."

    That's downright lovely. :)
