Commenting about stuff I've watched in the last couple of days...

After people were talking about The Tudors, I was expecting something way worse. Oh, it's no Rome and I get why people are less than impressed with it, but it wasn't the crapfest I was thinking it'd be. It's very junk food-y. I was entertained enough while watching it, but afterwards I started thinking about the problems... A big problem seems to be story editing. They can't seem to decide what to focus on, and so you'll get this random scene of a person, and then they disappear. Also, from what I understand, the historical accuracy of it makes historians of all times roll over in their now or future graves. But since I've got the bare minimum for this period stored in my mind, it doesn't bug me like it probably should. ("Henry had lots of wives. One of them was named Ann Boleyn. I think she might have been the mother of Elizabeth, but don't quote me on that." Yup. That about covers it.)

Anyway, it's all very much like a trashy romance novel you take with you to the beach. I'm gonna keep watching it, although I seriously doubt I'll ever get the urge to post about the individual episodes.

DW: The Invasion (Two, Jamie, Zoe)
  • First off, I've decided that Two and Jamie are pretty much Shaggy and Scooby.

  • This was a Cybermen episode, and there's so much here that reminds me of S2's "Rise of the Cybermen." Lots of similar elements and characters to it (like radio waves instead of Bluetooths, the guy who thought he could control them, emotions as a weapon...), and I've decided I kinda liked that. As opposed to being all "they ripped off this episode!" (Not that it was identical, obviously. Loads of differences.) But it was about the Cybermen getting a foothold on Earth, and I really do like that it was re-imagined for the Alt!Earth using similarities. Everything in RotC was about alt!characters who were the same, but really not. Same went for the Cybermen.

  • Really huge UNIT episode. Battling the Cybermen mostly involved brute force.

  • Zoe's growing on me. She had been fairly generic to me - basically yet another in a long line of Susan clones in the early years - but she's starting to distinguish herself. (Yeah, slapping on "math genius" didn't automatically turn her into a unique character to me.)

  • Jamie was completely absent from the finale (only turning up at the very end). When I noticed he was missing, it took me forever to remember that he'd been shot and so was...elsewhere. Wiki's telling me that the actor was on vacation and that's why he wasn't in it. Huh.
