I've gotta leave in a few minutes for a meeting up in Orange County. *POINTS AT THE TIME AND LETS LOOSE A STRING OF EXPLETIVES*
DON'T CRY, EMO!IANTO!!
Okay, the good thing was that we got some Jack backstory! Hooray! I will always take more of that, thanks! In fact, since they had everyone dressed up to take the old-time movies anyway, why not show us a flashback with Jack? That'd have been fantastic.
The bad thing was that I have no earthly idea why we got weepy Ianto in this episode. See, for character depth to work, I need some sort of motivation behind it. Was he...gassy? PMS-y? Forgot he left the iron on in his flat and knew it'd be burned down by now? Having memories of his father that really involved a traveling circus that he simply forgot to mention? His hormones kicked into overdrive on seeing Jack holding a child? WHAT?? I simply did not understand why suddenly this case had a profound impact on him. At all. I was doing the hands of joy on getting the "my dad used to take me to the cinema as a kid" thing at the beginning, because holy crap - something about Ianto's character that doesn't involve Torchwood! \o/ And then...then I have no idea what happened. I *want* Ianto episodes because I need to understand him yet. Seriously. But stuff like this...
Oooh, have you ever seen Monty Python's Confuse-A-Cat Ltd. sketch? Torchwood = Confuse-A-Cat Ltd.
As far as the actual plot went... There are many creepy stories about carnivals out there. This wasn't one of them.
