Dancin' by the Nile, the ladies love his style...

I went to see the King Tut exhibit at the L.A. County Museum yesterday. The pieces they have in that collection are *incredible*. Half the time you feel like you're looking at fakes since these items were so well preserved in the dry heat. Gold gold gold. If you end up going to one of the showings they're having in different locations, I'd recommend the audio tour headphones. They really added a lot. My only complaint was that there were way too many people packed in there - a lot of times you felt like a cow. They already had it set up where you had to make a reservation and so let only so many people in at a time, but still. You'd think for that kind of money they could have done about 2/3 of that amount and still be full and still make money. It was claustrophobic. Maybe it's lighter on a weekday.

We also poked around in a couple other of the LACMA's museums. If you're in the area, you gotta check out this cool drum/tree thing on the bottom floor of the Modern Art building. Oh hey! I found an article! http://www.laobserved.com/archive/003934.html Very, very cool. ETA: Ooops. Looks like that exhibit is only there until the 28th. Dang.

I think the exhibit will be in Chicago next summer -- I am SO going to it. Who cares that it's a seven hour drive?

We could make it part of the Squeecon events schedule.

Oooh! I might be able to make it to that event! *bounces*

If you do end up going with a group of people, you might look into someone getting a year membership at the museum before you get tickets, although I'm not sure if it'd be the same kind of deal with the museum in Chicago. We went with a LACMA member who I believe got a free ticket by being a member plus was able to get discounted tickets for a few others, plus there was a discount on the audio tour, plus we didn't have to stand in the massive line that the "commoners" were in but got to sit in a side area and got let in before the rest of the 5 p.m. people. Also, museum members got to order tickets ahead of the general public, ensuring the date and time.

I saw the King Tut exhibit in the Cairo museum, and I remember thinking it felt a lot like walking right into National Geographic. Egypt has some great preservation going on. I liked the coffins, because there were so many of them, and the funeral mask, which was unexpectedly small.

And this guy was a poor Pharoah.

Oh wow! Now that would be incredible to visit the museum in Cairo! They didn't actually have the funeral mask in this exhibit like they did in the 1970s, but they did have a sarcophogus, which was amazing!

It's really too bad that the other tombs were robbed so long ago. I'm sure he pieces were melted down and all that stuff no longer exists.
