I get curious about things, and wiki is an enabler.

I've gotten sucked into wiki for a while. As British-type people, are you taught everything about the monarchy when in school? Because OMG there are so many titles and orders and ceremonies and HOLY CRAP.

Poor [livejournal.com profile] shinyopals. Whenever I've emailed her anything to do with the royal wedding, she's ignored me. (Or mostly. She's caved a few times.) I COULD HAVE BEEN EMAILING YOU SO MUCH MORE, YOU KNOW. Like...
Me: OOOH. Did you know that the Queen doesn't sing during God Save the Queen? Makes sense, doesn't it?

Opal: *ignores*

Me: Hmm. The Order of the Garter? Why?

Opal: *blocks emails*

Lo. I remember my mother pointing out the same thing to me while we were watching.

At least I'm not the only dorky one! XD

[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I have so many times looked for a book that was like "British Nobility For Dummies" to explain all this!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
That would be perfect!!

[identity profile] katesutton.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
There is a Royal Wedding for Dummies! You think I'm joking!

[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha of course there is! Though I'm less interested in the wedding (I only got around to watching the highlights reel last night at like midnight, and even at that was sitting there going, "I can't believe I'm watching this.") and more in the history of the peerage and the titles and the etiquette and all that.

Michelle, if you had a Nook, I could lend you my ebook "A History of Britain" which is completely mis-named because really it should be called "A History of England's Monarchs (And Also Scotland's, But Only When They Are Troublesome And/Or Become England's Monarchs Too)." It does actually contain some useful and interesting tidbits on this topic.

Yes, some... person... borrowed it from work on Thursday. I refrained from comment.

What I was wondering about was -- why did Kate look down every time William saluted somebody on the drive back to the palace?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmmmm. Maybe it's like a nod or something? I have no idea. :D

Okay, I just googled it, and it seems the most likely explanation is that he salutes whenever they go past a war memorial or something, and Kate doesn't salue, because she's not in the military, so she just bows her head in respect.

That's what I was able to gather, anyway.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
That makes perfect sense.

[identity profile] buckbeakbabie.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I was wondering that too, and someone said it was because she should be curtseying but she couldn't because she was sitting down. So she bowed her head instead.

IDK if that's true or not...

[identity profile] jupisan.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
thought the bowing of kate was strange but william did it only in certain times so I figure it it out.
Love her dress.
I was watching the BBC America coverage.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I really liked her dress too! Very classy and looked wonderful on her.

If I were the Queen, I'd sing "God Save the Me."

Also, I really really wanted the Archbishop who got up there to do the procedings of the wedding to go "Mawwiage. Mawwiage is wat bwings us togeva today."

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)

You betchas.

Bwah! I was going, "Wuv. Twue Wuv." LOL!!

[identity profile] selenityshiroi.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
They can't teach us things like this because we don't have enough time in history classes!

American history is only a few hundred years old but British history is a few thousand! We have to focus on specific subjects, instead, for the most part. (Which, unfortunately, tends to be things like 'Medicine through Time' or 'World War Two' or 'The Industrial Revolution' and not cool and interesting, but ultimately less useful, subjects such as 'Royal Protocol'.)

Going to wikipedia and looking up the monarchy is a dangerous thing to do, though. I went there after watching The Young Victoria to check something that happened in the movie which I was sure was dramatic embellishment (it was) and ended up reading the last 150 years of British monarchy.

I feel so guilty, though, because all of the non-British people on my f-list seem to have watched the Royal Wedding and I haven't even properly looked at her dress.

This. Although, they might have some time if they didn't spend the whole of Standard Grade History on the First World War and the whole of Higher History on the Second World War *knows more about World Wars than anyone needs to* I'm from Scotland and above primary school level we are taught NOTHING about our history. Even in primary school it's basically Bonnie-Prince-Jacobites-moving-on... (from memory, first year history is a very quick scan through slavery in america, the various ways people were unhealthy through history, the industrial revolution, and how parliament came to be - but not the fun stuff)

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol you are so not the only one. I did not watch any of the wedding. I only know what the dress looked like because various Americans/Canadians sent me pictures.

[identity profile] skippity-doo.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
lol me either, dude. I did see a few pictures because I was curious about her dress. But only to check that mine is nicer. (It is, but hers was very lovely.)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems like just the non-Brits have watched! XD

But I've been meaning to watch The Young Victoria. I really should one of these days.

And that is the nice thing about American History. Not as much stuff. :D When it came to World History though, it was basically British History and to a lesser extent European History. It wasn't until college that I could take other history classes like one in Ancient China (which was really interesting.)

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Michelle, stop doing this. Please, I BEG YOU.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
You could ask me questions if you want! Like...anything you need to know about Donald Trump?

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
But what about the hats!!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
THEY ARE BRITISH. I KNOW THAT MUCH.

[identity profile] jacksrubberduck.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
::shrug:: Not at all really.

I only know more than one verse of the national anthem because I'm a Girl Guide (Girl Scout).
I do have a very cool history ruler though that lists ruling monarchs of England since 1066 on a handy piece of stationary.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-04-30 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
So you all don't really sing the national anthem at sporting events and so on? That's probably the only way I'd remember my national anthem. :D

And neat! I think I had something like that but with Presidents at one time. Just a bit less info on it. :D

[identity profile] jacksrubberduck.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh we do sing it at big sporting events but we never really properly learn it and most people kind of bumble through it only vaguely knowing the words.
