Gah! This is bugging me.

Okay, so the Silence. So I think the Doctor said that they were leeches or parasites or something, but what did they actually do to make them that? They didn't seem to feed off humans in any way. Okay, there was the erasing people's memories so they wouldn't remember them. And then...manipulating humans to build a space suit? And that's why they went to the moon? That has me scratching my head though, because clearly they have technology far advanced than humans - why would they need humans to build things for them? (Couldn't they have used a deep sea suit?) Other than looking scary and creepy, they just seemed to sort of...hang out.

I'm not saying the Silence were fluffy bunnies or anything, but where was the menace beyond them creeping people out? And why did they hang around humans anyway?

Did I miss something? (Quite possible.)

ETA: OH! And another thing! (Things I think of when trying to fall asleep.)

I'm still kind of bugged by the Doctor's resolution to the Silence. Maybe he'd run into them before and knew this was the only solution? It'd be nice to have heard that though. Did these creatures have a society? Could there have been factions that wanted nothing to do with humans? Yeah, this is putting more into Monster of the Week than probably should be. But I was thinking about the Silurian ep last season where there were negotiations for who deserved the planet and so on...

I think we find out at the end of the series (after all - whatever they did ended in the doctor's death, didn't it?). The suit has something to do with that little girl. Also there was something about the suit working on its own, right? Eeee. Love it.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm. Maybe it is all more timey-wimey nonsense. :D

[identity profile] mornea.livejournal.com 2011-05-03 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The suit rebuilt itself, just like a damaged TARDIS. Is that her TARDIS? Is she time lord (or time lady)? Is this whole season happening inside an inside-out TARDIS?

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
In the context of just this episode, the Doctor's actions seem like a major overreaction. But supposedly the Silence caused the Tardis to explode in series 5, right? And the fish aliens said they destroyed their home planet? But idk. The only thing we know that they explicitly did was be creepy, kill that one lady, and use that girl for.... whatever it was they were trying to do?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
But supposedly the Silence caused the Tardis to explode in series 5, right?

Did they? I've lost track of what all happened last series. :D

And the fish aliens said they destroyed their home planet?

*tries to remember fish aliens* :D

The only thing we know that they explicitly did was be creepy, kill that one lady, and use that girl for.... whatever it was they were trying to do?

So I guess the suit/the Silence killed the Doctor.

Oy. I'm starting to get annoyed by the 20 different things going on at once. Maybe I'd be better off marathonning this like I did last year.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. As the Tardis was exploding there was a voice that said something to the effect of "Silence has fallen"... or something. And the fish aliens were in "Vampires of Venice" and Draco Malfoy's mother implied that they lost their home planet because of the Silence.

And yeah, there are just so many plot threads going on and left hanging. Ugh. It just all feels so chaotic and sloppy. I'm not a fan.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
How would the fish woman know about the Silence?

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Beats me. Maybe they captured footage of them on smart phone technology? I mean, we don't even know how Amy, Rory and River were able to learn and remember things about them. Last week, they had the cell phone picture, but Rory and River were down in the basement and kept forgetting about what they learned about the Silents down there.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, the magic of plot holes. XD

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically, the Doctor is a douchebag. Only not the good sort.

Idk, I think they were like... directing humanity behind-the-scenes or something. I don't think any final purpose was mentioned. Maybe Planet Earth is just a massive game of The Sims for them. Whatever. Eleven was as bad as them.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The Sims! XD XD XD

Okay, so what was their plan with releasing Andy Dick on the world? THEY ARE EVIL.

Heh. You kind of wonder if all the creatures who are secretly controlling the human race ever get together for meetings.

[identity profile] shinyopals.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they have to, or else how are they going to organise who gets to fuck with the south of England this week?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
And I wonder if they try to play mind games with each other.

"I'm controlling you."

"No, I'M controlling YOU."

"I'M CONTROLLING YOU TIMES INFINITY."

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
So this makes like the fifth time that we've run into aliens who are guiding humanity to advance just for their own devices?

Off-hand I remember The Daemons, The Count in City of Death, and a few more that escape my mind but "did" happen.

So why haven't these "humanity guiding aliens" every run across each other???

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, right? XD

And what if one group wants Marisa Tomei to win the Oscar, but another group doesn't, and a third group just wants to eat Marisa Tomei?

Silurian ep last season where there were negotiations for who deserved the planet and so on...

YES.

I think the Silence are going to be more than just the Monster-of-the-week. I think they're going to revisit them later in the season.

Yeah, these are the things I was thinking about last night when I was trying to go to sleep, too. :)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be strange to revisit them when the human race has gone off genocideing since 1969. It would be interesting to see this biting the Doctor on the ass down the road though. Sort of like The Long Game which directly led to the stupiding of the human race.
captaintish: (Dr. Who -- the world is very strange)

[personal profile] captaintish 2011-05-01 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Is anybody else hoping for a fic about the time Martha and Ten were hanging out in 1969 and like, shooting randomly at the Silents, while building the timey-wimey detector? lol

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
BWAH!!!

"Martha, why's there a big pool of blood on the floor?"

"I thought that was something to do with your weirdness."

"I'M NOT WEIRD! What were we talking about?"

"...pie?"
captaintish: (Dr. Who -- 10th Doctor - goofy grin)

LOL!

[livejournal.com profile] calapine made a good point about the Silence, I think. Which was basically that if what the Doctor had *really* wanted was for All Humans to Kill All Silence, he wouldn't have told them about it. Instead, what he did was to say, "Guess what? I want you off this planet and leave the humans alone and here's a heckuva motivation to give me what I want."

We don't actually know that a single Silence was killed (well, other than the ones River got). For all we know they mighta beamed out as soon as the TARDIS took off. *g*

That's what Moffat intended anyway, I think, and that's how I'm choosing to see it.

That said, overall I was a bit underwhelmed by the episodes in general. Possibly because every time they let River do something that makes me like her a little more, they have to turn around and shove the OMGSHELOVETHEDOCTORANDTHEDOCTORWILLLOVEHURRRRRRRRRRRRRRR in our faces. :-P I love The Moff's Who, but I would love it sooooo much more if there were no Doctor River Song. :-P

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-05-01 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Possibly. I really wish they would have gone that extra step to tell us that was the plan though. As it was, it just sounded like KILL ALL ALIENS. :D

And yeah, I'm a bit eye-rolly at the whole River/Doctor thing. I get the feeling it's meant to be EPIC and TRAGIC, but most times I find it a bit ridiculous. (I'm guessing I'd loathe The Time Traveler's Wife.) Plus the recent revelation that she first met him when she was young. Stop putting kids in your love stories! It's happened about 5 times now in Moffat's episodes and it's extremely creepy.

I thought at one point he did say something like, "You're going to want to leave Earth and here's why," but maybe I'm misremembering. I'd have to watch it again. *shrug*

I'm still hoping that when they said "young girl" they really meant like, I don't know, twenty or something. *g* Not that I think that would make it really work better for me...I guess I just don't like being TOLD who to 'ship and with a relationship like that you really can't SHOW it develop. :-P

And yeah...I'm not a huge fan of TTTW either. I mean...I read it, I saw the movie, and I did somewhat enjoy it (the book more than the movie, of course) but it does make it extremely creepy that the first time Claire meets Henry a) she's eight(ish?), and b) he's NAKED. :-P Just, um...NO.

Could be.

Beyond the relationship, I've sort of have that problem with River in general. We never get to see her change/develop. In fact, she's pretty much the same as when we saw her in S4.

HEH. Yeah, that would not be my thing.

I was VERY bothered by the doctor's solution. It made me wonder if this IS the doctor. Or if the doctor is somehow split into parts (implied in Amy's choice, which seems to be a key ep to understanding both seasons five and six).

Cheerful genocide, that's what it was. And he's obviously steering Amy and Rory away from the child (or running himself). Okay, running IS like him, but much in this ep was NOT like him. The doctor has been dark and arrogant and manipulative in other incarnations (seven especially, and we saw flashes in ten who constantly fought that darker side-- and often lost). But this takes the cake. The doctor yelled at and hated his other self (10.5) for destroying the Daleks (sort of) again? Claiming genocide that needed punishing? Heck, 10.5 saved the earth and all it's people- he wasn't *trying* to destroy every Dalek, he was *trying* to save a lot of people who were being attacked.
One could argue 11 is doing the same thing, but the Silents, other than looking creepy and obviously being able to kill, were NOT like the Daleks.
He arranged for humans to wipe out all of them.
Either the doctor knows something major we don't know, or 11 is crazier than crazy Ten, or this isn't the doctor (or isn't all of him). Or... I have no idea. Lots of 'ors'. Argh.

I do think River is absolutely "the Silence" itself, though. And the child.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2011-05-04 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It really would make a lot of sense if the Doctor was somehow split, although I'm not sure Moffat would go that route, if I'm honest. As much as I often enjoy his stories, he tends to write caricatures rather than characters. Not always, but often. So...

Yeah.
