(no subject)

"So history is just circling the drain at this point." ~ MST3K on the movie Time Chasers.

"So much for causality." ~ Sam in Moebius 2.
Back in 2004, on a brisk morning in Vancouver, writers for the show Stargate SG-1 huddled around their third cup of coffee for the day and proceeded to have a conversation that I can only assume went something like this:
"So hey. What are we going to do for the last show of the season?"

"Well, SciFi cut us short this year so if you think about it, technically would the last show of the season even exist?"

"Shut up, Joe. But hey. That gives me an idea."

"Can that idea mess with fan number 3,562,031's head?"

"The one that's afraid of Teal'c's arms?"

    "No, you're thinking of 3,290,067."

"Oh wait. The one that freaks out every time we do anything with time and/or AUs? Yeah. This idea should toast her brain nicely."

    "Sweet."
There is so much I could say about the time aspect of these two episodes. "But they have..." "That couldn't..." "Nononono..." However, I am now in a support group that is helping me get over my time/AU issues. And while said support group is based heavily on mocking, I'm told it's for the best.

I *am* having a mid-fandom crisis because while the underlying logic of this episode was so very bad, this 2-parter had to be one of my favorites ever. This episode exemplifies why I fell in love with this show to begin with: it's just a whole damn lot of fun.

I've seen several posts on this episode already, so I'm not going to re-hash what's already out there. But I will say one thing - those involved with SG-1 are *so* into the Simpsons, and I love them for it. The last lines about the fish were directly from the same episode as Sam's line in Moebius 1 about not stepping on a bug. At the end of the Simpsons episode, everything seemed exactly the same until it was revealed that everyone had lizard tongues. Homer's line: "Ehh, close enough." However, I don't think that meant Marge was pregnant. ;)

*brightly* If it helps, I plan a diagram for my post on this episode. (No, really, I do. It's gonna look kind of like a phylogenetic tree.)

OOOOOOO. Graphs are *good*.

It's gonna be great! There will be lots of different letters standing for different timelines and branch points and...

...or maybe I'll just get lazy and ignore the whole thing. *shrug*

Hell yeah! the logic of this ep flew so far out the window of unreality i saw it fly by here. I could pick it to bits.

Why wont I?

Cos I loved it. it was fun, it was cute and it was shippy.

so yes for once I will let the "I dont think so's" lie.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2005-02-24 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! I'm so willing to ignore all that just because the story they told was so entertaining! Loved it! HEE!

[identity profile] poohmusings.livejournal.com 2005-02-24 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, only going to subject you to this once. :)

Timeline 1: No SG1 in 3000 B.C. Everything is as has been shown on the show.

Timeline 2: SG1 in 3000 B.C. SG1!Jack and SG1!Teal'c help stage an early rebellion. Rebellion is unsuccessful. SG1!Jack, Teal'c, and Sam are killed. SG1!Daniel later helps stage successful rebellion, but when Ra ditches Earth, he takes the stargate with him, so that compels SG1!Daniel to write that tablet about where to find the second gate in Antartica and buries the tablet where the first gate had been found in Timeline 1. Because Ra took the gate with him, all future events have been altered (Daniel and Sam are geeks, Jack's a fisherman, Teal'c's still First Prime).

Timeline 3: SG1!Daniel and the Jack, Teal'c, and Sam from Timeline 2 are in 3000 B.C. SG1!Daniel learns that simply writing a tablet telling people where to find the second stargate isn't good enough to ensure that the "future" of Timeline 3 is identical to the how things played out in Timeline 1. The integral factor is making sure Ra doesn't take the gate with him when he ditches Earth. So SG1!Daniel and the Jack, Teal'c, and Sam from Timeline 2 help stage another rebellion that this time, supposedly, prevents Ra from taking the gate when he leaves Earth. They, supposedly, bury the gate in the same spot where it was unburied in Timeline 1. Because the gate is now there for Catherine's father to find, the future of Timeline 3 matches the future of Timeline 1 with the exception of SG1 now not having to go back in the past to get the ZPM (which I believe we are supposed to believe SG1!Daniel buried near the gate so it could also be discovered by Catherine's father).

That probably doesn't help with your confusion, but since I charted at all out around 3:30 a.m., I felt the need to type it out somewhere. ;)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2005-02-24 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I'm not really confused about the timelines. I *do* get the internal logic. That's not the problem. The problem is that my rational mind rebells against the underlying principle.

I am currently bludgeoning my rational mind with a wet fish.

Which is clearly anti-time travel. Just imagine how alarmed your future self will be when she pops in for a visit this weekend. ;)

Bloody hell, I'm IMPRESSED.

I also have a headache *g*

Wasn't there a missing scene with Daniel emerging from the shower, or did he then get run over by a passing Ha'tak?
No, that was last season...

[identity profile] poohmusings.livejournal.com 2005-02-24 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! Seriously, have been pondering this since 3 a.m., so have had plenty of time to think it all through. ;)

Wasn't there a missing scene with Daniel emerging from the shower, or did he then get run over by a passing Ha'tak?

That was right before the OT3 took place on board the jumper in Timeline 3. :D

*slaps thigh*
Of COURSE it was!

And Sam and Jack are intrude upon Daniel and Teal'c's (omgtheirloveissomanly) love shack rendezvous where long rods feature prominently.

(which I believe we are supposed to believe SG1!Daniel buried near the gate so it could also be discovered by Catherine's father)

Actually, I think that's to be found 8 years after the SGC gets put into place, as they're only getting it and the video in the present. If it's indeed the present we know. ;)

Yeah, I think it's either that or all the stuff (ZPM, tablet, video tape) was discovered by Catherine's dad at the time the gate was unburied, and SG1 is only getting its hands on it now because Daniel inherited a bunch of stuff from Catherine post her death.

I understand your love for this episode - it's like my love for Gemini. I deeply, deeply love that episode despite the fact that all the characters were clearly high for the entire episode. Very, very high. Plot holes galore.

And the logic hurts because it doesn't work. Forget the logic. Breathe deeply. There is no logic. That's it... Ohmmmmmmmmmm.... There is no logic. There is just the pretty, and the fun. Ohmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

Bwahahahahaha! Clearly they were burning the giant plant from Zero Hour that day.

Theory: The cause of the Big Bang was time travel. Some dimwits figured out how to do it, tried it out, (What could go wrong?) and everything collapsed in on itself and went kablooey.

Regarding the logic thing...I believe it really does work as an AU/Unrealized Reality. I'll have to draw a diagram.

But I will say one thing - those involved with SG-1 are *so* into the Simpsons, and I love them for it.

Oh, yes! I want to know who was the one who got Dan Castellaneta to play Joe in Citizen Joe. Seeing the guy who does the voice of Homer share part of his brain with Jack had me on the floor.
