Cooking!

I was in cooking mode today, and it turned out pretty tasty, if I say so myself. I made slow cooker pea soup using this recipe. Although I used ham instead of smoked sausage. (Smoked sausage in pea soup? HAM.) It also didn't need that much liquid. I'd say 8 cups instead of 10, and even then it's not super thick.

I also made baklava for the first time! I used this recipe. It turned out pretty well, although I don't think I baked it long enough even though it was "golden and crisp" on top. The middle layers weren't cooked much. It's still tasty though. Although if I make it again I'll probably only use half as much syrup. I know traditional baklava does actually have that much in it, but it's a preference thing - I'd be happy with just a tiny amount. Maybe I'll make it thinner as well. As it is, it filled up a 9x13, so it's probably no wonder the middle couldn't get cooked. P.S. Never buying store-bought baklava again.

I'm incapable of making baklava without coating my entire kitchen in a thin film of butter. In an old house we had one of those broom-handle-holders that relies on friction to keep the broom held. After I made baklava I could no longer hang up my broom. It just slid right out.

BWAH! My butter seemed to stay fairly contained. Might be because I'm already pretty good at keeping my distance from it while working with it. Butter, shortening - anything like that - I DO NOT LIKE TOUCHING IT AND IT NEVER COMES OFF YOUR HANDS. I baked a lot growing up and OMG THE SHORTENING. *FLAILS*

I made more of a mess with my pea soup than my baklava. :D

Yay, Baklava! That is one of the most delicious things ever.

That baklava looks yummy. Never had one before. I just have to figure out what/where to find 1 (16 ounce) package phyllo dough and I'm set. XD

I found it in the freezer section at the grocery store. Where all the non-ice cream desserts were. :D

I did throw in a little bacon as well since I didn't have quite enough ham for it. MMmmmmmm.

See, I like that texture. CRUNCH. XD

I just sent you a baklava recipe. Trust me, it's worth finding the ingredients (not that difficult here in the Southland)

Baklava! \o/ Food of the gods! I love it but I don't make it often since we don't really need a whole pan of baklava in the house. :)

As for split pea soup I'm with you on the ham definitely. Though I do like to add some bacon fat to mine since it pumps up the flavor.

Yeah, that was kind of bad. I didn't need a whole pan of baklava in the house either. XD

And I did throw in a little bacon with the ham. It was TASTY!
