I used to hate them but I think that tumblr tags have made me completely desensitized to them. :|
lol forever @ peenis though.

"Chair" isn't that much better. Why would you even want to identify with that name?
Peenis? It's Peeta/Katniss from the Hunger Games. :D

I picked Other. I like then when they work, but most of them don't work, so I refuse to use those. I'm just picky. :)
I'm not sure I've come across one I like yet. :D
I like some, dislike others, but mostly LOL PEENIS. XD
They're easier to figure out and keep track, unlike some with specific/in-joke names like Gilmore Girls/Pokemon/WGM.

Yeah, the random pairing names confuse me. :|
I only really like them when I find the portmanteau especially silly. Like Stelena? Meh. Peeniss?? YES PLEASE. Some people are trying to make Everlark the portmanteau for Katniss/Peeta, but WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO BE EVERLARK WHEN YOU COULD BE PEENISS OR KATPEE???
I have the sense of humor of a middle schooler. lol.
I have the sense of humor of a middle schooler. lol.
And meanwhile I'd be over in the corner yelling "WHY NOT JUST KATNISS/PEETA? WHYYYYYYYYY?" XD
Lawd fucking EVERYONE in the Avatar/Korra fandoms uses them and it's so annoying/terrible. PLUS LIKE GOD IF IT'S ANYTHING OTHER THAN ONE OF THE STANDARD SHIPS I HAVE TO SQUINT AT THE STUPID KEYBOARDSMASH NAME FOR TEN MINUTES FIGURING OUT WHAT CHARACTERS IT'S EVEN MEANT TO REPRESENT.
I am 4ever glad they didn't catch on in Doctor Who fandom. Sometimes I see someone on Tumblr being all TEEHEE TEN/ROSE COULD BE TOES and I want to burn Utica to the ground.

I've seen people trying to start up "Drose" before. NO. BAD FANDOM. NO COOKIE FOR YOU.

PEPPERONY. I saw that for the first time this past week. ಠ_ಠ
Ehhhhhhn. I don't really like them. They sort of make sense where they originated*, in Japan, because every "letter" has a natural vowel at the end. So you can use the first two "letters" in a name of each person and your done. (Like off the top of my head, Kurea or Sanami. Or 1x2**.) In English, you get weird combos like...*points to Hunger Games* because the names don't always stop in a functional way.
Now that I've outed myself as a total nerd, I'll see myself out.
*At least, I saw them first in Japanese media, whereas American fandoms tended to fully spell out names or just use the first letter if it wasn't confusing. But I can't say I know the mysterious ways of most American TV fandoms. Maybe they came up with it on their own! Poor things.
** Gundam Wing fangirls just had to be different.

The little blurb I saw about the subject said that it all originated in Japan as well. I didn't know that about the letters/words though. At least its origins made some sort of sense.

UGH. I do not like Johnlock. Or Mystrad. DNW.
Maybe Clone/Rose would be Crone.

I kind of like them. I spent years in anime/manga fandoms where the same thing was done by combining Kanji from character's names, so I was well used to them before they became the standard for every fandom under the sun. (and, yeah, since all Japanese syllables end in a vowel (excluding the 'n' syllable) they will always flow)
And now I'm in Glee fandom, which has a portmanteau for every romance and friendship combination you can possibly think of. Some are really clever (like Puckleberry Finn for a threesome between Puck, Rachel Berry and Finn) whilst some are less elegant like Sam/Kurt becoming Kum and Finn/Puck becoming...well, you can guess (although Pinn does tend to get used in polite circles). The best is Quinndependence (Quinn/Independence) for those who think Quinn needs to stay away from relationships and think of herself for a while! They actually all flow pretty well in Glee...and they make use of the surnames if they have to (the friendship between Mike Chang and Blaine Anderson becoming Bike Chanderson, for example).
So, yeah, I like them if they work and if they are in common enough use to not have to think about deciphering them. But sometimes they either don't work or don't fit the style of the fandom.

I imagine it's no biggie if you're used to it, and if you wind up with a cute name for your favorite ship. But there's so much that can go wrong!!! XD
I don't know what to pick! Sometimes I like them and sometimes they are ridiculous. I do like what Once Upon fandom does with the names: we have Mad Swan and Golden Queen and Red Snow and Evil Charming. *g* I don't even mind RumBelle or Snowing as portmanteaus. Once you're thinking Peenis or Spred are good for ships though, it's way too late for you.
See, I have no idea what most of those pairings are! XD

If it's a pairing I care about I get RIDICULOUSLY ANGRY. But if it's like... ~Dair or ~Stelena or ~Johnlock then lol KEEP ON GOING, FANDOM.
Peenis is the greatest though.

Shweir.
Spuffy.
No. Kill it with fire.
Seriously, what happened to name/name? It makes sense to anyone who reads it and doesn't make anyone want to gag. That's still all I use.
Also, I'm surprised (only a little) that it started in Japan; I thought it only caught on with fandom after Brangelina and TomKat.

YES. IT IS NOT HARD TO DO NAME/NAME. EASY AND NO MISTAKING THINGS.
I wonder why do people hate them so much? I mean, yeah, some of them sound incredibly silly (lol, KatPee) and I would never use those except ironically but I can see the appeal because they save the typing time and I'm a lazy person (I used to always use Hameron for House/Cameron and Huddy for House/Cuddy) I've been in fandoms that don't have established portmanteaus, though, like Doctor Who or Community, because name combinations in those just don't sound good so thankfully people don't use them. But it's soo annoying when the media try to, I remember E! online tried to call us Jeff/Annie shippers "Jannies" and NO, just NO, don't do that, media people.
For me, at least, the whole idea is too twee. :D
And I hate it when the media tries to get on board. It makes me cringe!

I really don't like them and only use them on Tumblr because those are the most common tags, I've found.
The most hilarious one I've encountered is from Chuck for the pairing Morgan/Lester. Try and figure out what it is. Thankfully it never caught on. :D
Mostly they just feel lazy, tbh. I'd rather type out Elena/Elijah and Chuck/Sarah than Elejah or Charah.

Tumblr tags break if you use a / in them which is probably why so many people catch on to portmanteau names. RRRRRR. TUMBLR RUINS EVERYTHING ONCE AGAIN.
I am usually very anti-them. However, BroTP (which isn't even their names) and Spuffy are the exception. Spuffy, because it's so the opposite of what they actually are.
I'm very happy that the people that tried to make Drose happen never got it to work. In fact, several of my OTPs don't really have names that work like that.

Oh, is BroTP an actual specific pairing? I just thought it meant a couple of dudes in whatever show.
I am generally Dislike -1, except for Pepperony, where I am NUKE IT FROM ORBIT IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO BE SURE.
XD That one seems especially twee.
Best one I've ever seen -- Tyler/Nolan (from Revenge) = TyleNol. LOLing forever.
BWAH!!
“What could possibly be worse than being reduced to a clichéd female stereotype by someone who claims to hate them and all they stand for?”
“Point taken. But this,” CJ Cregg says, poking the computer screen for emphasis, “is still pretty damn bad.”
*DIES*

It TOTALLY depends on the fandom and how they are used. For instance, I will never submit to Sam/Jack being portmanteau'd, unless it's humorous. But other fandoms I'd probably be able to live with seeing them around.
What would you even smush it to? Sack? XD
Since I have to bow down to fandom's whims I can't answer the way I wish I could (may there be a special place in hell for portmanteau names)
i use them quite a lot actually. in jap fandom you almost always smush the first two syllables together [eg sasusaku for sasuke/sakura], so widespread i was practically bred on it. i've mostly moved away now though, except for tumblr and the impossible use of slashes. and gilbatore for damon/elena/stefan [sorry for vampire talk, but relevant example] because tagging is easier.
Someone was saying that about the Japanese names and so on. TUMBLR HAS NO EXCUSE THOUGH. XD
I hated Shules (Shawn/Jules from Psych) when I first heard it, but I'm used to it now, so i use it.
I haven't seen any for Doctor/Rose, but i guess that's just cause Nose, Tose, Elose, Dose, Roctor, Ren, Rine, and Releven don't work. ;)

I did see people trying to use Drose a while back. Thankfully it never caught on!
There are a few I've gotten too used to, like Spuffy (Spike/Buffy), but for the most part I do not use them. And I'm always confused when I run across a new one. I had to stare at Johnlock for awhile before I even realized it was a portmanteau, let alone who it was about.
HA!
The thing that drives me a bit nuts about Sherlock fandom is that everything is "[something]lock". Even stuff that's not pairings.
I think I'll blame Moffatlock.

KATPEE 4 EVA! Hahahahahahaha, NO.
I'm not a fan of the portmanteaus (portmanteaux?), but find it helpful to know what they are so I can search on tumblr or the like.
