WELL. I've completely lost any sort of respect for the people who choose the winners. Giving the award to Andrew Scott (Moriarty) instead of Martin Freeman? IDGAF that he won last year. That is absolutely not a good basis to vote for/not vote for a person. His acting in Reichenbach was flawless, and meanwhile Moriarty is just an annoying caricature.

FU, voters. FU. And Andrew Scott just made my list FOR ALL OF TIME.

Keep in mind, The Only Way is Essex", a show that makes The Jersey Shore look classy, has a BAFTA but the man in my icon does not. Hasn't even been nominated. Just saying.

[identity profile] jupisan.livejournal.com 2012-05-27 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
These two in my icon, have not been nominated for a bafta yet. They were flawless in series 2 of Downton Abbey.

YEP.

I am actually really mad that Michelle Dockery wasn't nominated. She carried series 2, imo.

Really? HMPH.

I've actually never really understood how the BAFTA people make their decisions.

That's far too scientific, I think.

I think if more drunk pets ran awards shows they'd be more entertaining.

They cut the head of a chicken and set the body loose on a board with the nominees' names. Where the chicken dies is the winner.

Tbh, I'm glad SM said he's not coming back.

THANK GOD. This show really didn't/doesn't need an arc. Just do one-offs!

A Special Award! I didn't even know I was ill!

HEH.

Yeahhhhh ever since GitF beat Doomsday, I agree with you. Granted I don't think Doomsday is the best ep of s2 either, but it's certainly better than GitF imo SO THERE lol.

Except that wasn't a BAFTA I don't think.

Oh well.

Point is, I feel ya!

I could sort of deal with that one I can *almost* bring myself to say that I can understand how GitF might appeal to people more as a standalone story for its...ascetic; for all of Doomsday's great factors it's an emotional punch in the gut but it isn't a fancy period piece or anything.

HOWEVER, that logic falls apart when it comes to season 3 & 4. I can maybe hold onto it a bit as Blink was a very standalone episode, but HN/FoB get the period piece/Doctor has episodic love interest elements so by all rights it should get the same recognition as GitF right? And then the mere fact that they NOMINATED SitL/FotD is something I will hold against their reputation forever.

Season 4 has 11 episodes (12 with VotD that is). And then for some reason this River person showed up in s5 and I guess we were supposed to know who she is...I'm sure the explanation for why this is the case isn't stupid, insulting, or horrifying. At all.

[identity profile] larissa-j.livejournal.com 2012-05-28 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I kept waiting... wanting to like her. Never happened. Hated her backstory too.

[personal profile] jedi_of_urth 2012-05-28 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
While it wouldn't have saved the character, I wonder if I wouldn't like her a LITTLE bit better if she hadn't shown up until s5. She's completely out of place in Ten's story, and knowing the end of her story and how horrible it is (seriously even when I hated her character I thought she deserved better than that ending) makes it difficult to grow attached to her.

But then I remember that she's still really annoying in Eleven's era so it couldn't help a ton, just any reason to retcon those eps out of existence would improve the universe as a whole.

LOL EXACTLY. Those s5 cracks in the universe can cut both ways, and eat up all the episodes I don't like, too!! XD

[personal profile] jedi_of_urth 2012-05-28 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I can get behind this. The cracks totally ate those episodes, it left this DVD in my collection that for SOME REASON thinks there are more episodes, but I've never actually seen them (repression is good for the soul).

[personal profile] kilodalton 2012-05-28 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I get what you mean about the aesthetics ... I just don't think the script for GitF is particularly good =X

It's one of those episodes where at multiple points during the storyline, I just want to yell at the TV "why don't you just do-this-thing-different since you're so brilliant and save yourself SO MUCH TROUBLE??" ... and so the script falls flat for me. As a viewer, I should never ever be smarter than the Doctor about logical/thinky stuff. But he's such a dummy in that ep ...

And then the mere fact that they NOMINATED SitL/FotD is something I will hold against their reputation forever.

Yeah, that's them nominating the author, not the script I think =/

I'm really not a fan of GitF, especially as a DW episode. It might have been a passable episode of the Twilight Zone without established characters and rules to their universe, but as a DW episode with those thing it fails. BUT if the committee who judges these things aren't really DW fans (...actually that logic is self destructive as they definitely seem to be fans at least of Moff's eps) and were judging the episode solely on its own WITHOUT knowing the characters and the way the show's rules worked I can forgive them for finding it worked on it's own.

That doesn't mean I have to like it but I can at least find a way to live with their actions. I'm not a huge fan of Blink either but if I use the same logic I can *almost* see how it appealed more than the other options, but even that's stretching it. By the time we got to s4 it just just ridiculous amounts of favoritism that anyone could like that god awful episode. I wish we could lose those episodes somehow.

[personal profile] kilodalton 2012-05-28 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
It's SO funny that you say that, because I always thought that Moffat would have made a better writer for something like the Twilight Zone than for DW! Yeah I think you've hit the nail on the head with the 'established rules' thing, which is a big peeve of mine with Moffat in particular, and GitF is pretty emblematic of this (i.e. the most brilliant man in the universe forgetting that time passes differently on the spaceship and in France - which he himself stated/alluded to at least twice, the last time being only seconds before trying to go back thru the fireplace and realizing she was dead. Argh x 1000 there!) And you're totally right, in a universe with less established rules - or with a character set with less canon behind them, I think it would be much better. A venue like that would play to Moffat's strengths a lot more than a canon-heavy show like DW, which imo more serves to highlight his weaknesses.

J/w if there are reasons you're not a huge fan of Blink. I'm kind of comme-çi-comme-ça on it, but I'm just curious! =)

I had some hope that once he was the show runner I would be able to deal with him better, because he'd be less playing with other people's characters and able to make his own. I never expected to like it as Doctor Who exactly, but I thought he might make a better showing once he had control of the reigns. But no, still haven't watched s6, just don't care any more; isn't sitting on my computer if I finally reach the point where I just want to see what everyone's been complaining about.

About Blink, it's just so Moffat-y. It/he THINKS it's so clever and original when I've seen those kinds of time paradoxes done elsewhere at least as well. With less casual-sexism and where my biggest question afterward wasn't "um, did the Doctor rescue any of the people that got stuck in the past or did he leave everyone lost in time? Because after the last episode I (HN/FoB) I can totally believe he could be that dark right now, but I need to KNOW damn it." I did really like the episode the first time I watched it, but it doesn't stand up to repeated viewings IMO, because the self satisfied tone of it gets grating really quickly.

[personal profile] kilodalton 2012-05-28 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeaaaah I think that outside The Doctor's Wife and The Girl Who Waited, s6 was extremely forgettable and sometimes cringeworthy =/ Moffat doesn't seem to even want to make his own characters - we've had 6 different versions of Amy Pond so far! Six!! You can't get to know a character when you're switching their timelines/motivations/stories around that much. Amy and Eleven both seem like strangers to me now as much as they were at the beginning of s5, and it's really a shame =(

Completely understood re Blink. I'm more of a time/paradox newbie, so it was really cool to me at first. I totally feel the same about the repeat viewing thing though ... the ep seems like it's just leading to the punchline, and once you've heard the 'joke' once it never seems as funny the second time unless there's something else subtextual there (which I don't think Blink has).

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-05-28 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
And apparently Moffat won a special BAFTA tonight? For being special, I guess? BAFTA kind of sucks. XD

Oh BAFTA. Kristen Stewart won a BAFTA once. As a 'rising star' because of Twilight or some such rot. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the girl, I actually like her outside Twilight, but a BAFTA, really? I keep hearing the BAFTAs being compared as the British version of the Oscars, but I think it's more like an MTV Movie Awards where the celebs are required to dress like they're attending the Oscars.
