I kind of have a hate-hate relationship with tumblr going. It lures me in with pretty things and then whaps me over the head with the stupid/scary/wrong. Tumblr is basically an anglerfish.

Every time I have a SOMEONE IS WRONG ON THE INTERNET moment, I'm tempted to get one so I can troll troll troll. (And reblog a lot of Sherlock gifs.) I could become the most hated person on tumblr! But then that'd be defeating the point. Like I've said before, I believe tumblr is a MMORPG where the objective is to acquire and manage friends. There's also a secondary objective involving otters.

Am conflicted. On the one hand, there's bad logic going down and clearly I must be the one to stop it! (Obviously. Or not.) On the other, most days I can't be assed to do meta (fandom-related or non-fandom-related) anymore. Too draining.

Yeah Tumblr is ... odd. It kind of reminds me of Myspace back in the day because it is just so cluttered @.@ (Side note: that's why I don't think it will last as a platform. Not very scaleable and way too much 'noise'). A lot of meta seems to get lost there - or at the very least, it doesn't end up being interactive meta, because everyone is individually reblogging things and nothing ends up coherent after a while =/

I have one mainly for fandom news and such that falls through the cracks on Twitter/FB/LJ, but I don't use it a whole ton. It's really hard to have conversations with people on there, and 99% of the fun of fandom for me is having other people to share it with, and discuss it with. That's why I stick to LJ and even, to a much lesser extent FB, than Twitter or Tumblr.

Yeah, it seems like most of the interaction is liking a post or rebloging it. Actual dialog? Not so much. And don't even get me started on posting fic on tumblr. The only place less suited for posting fic would possibly be a collection of matchbook covers.

Ugh tell me about it >.< .....

The format is bad enough in the best cases, but omg when people have animations and I'm trying to read a longer piece I get so woozy >.< ... lol I have to copy/paste anything I want to read at that point if it's not crossposted >.<....

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't even bother. If the author doesn't care about making something readable, I don't care about reading it.

Can totally understand that!!! @.@

[identity profile] chloris.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The esc key is your friend! I tend to hit it soon after I load a page on tumblr so that everything thankfully becomes STILL. Too many gifs makes a cranky Chloris.

There's always that. 5 years from now I could be "oh right. i have one of those." XD

Tumblr is weird because it encourages me to be very blatantly aggressive lol. Like, you can't make any locked posts or anything, so basically I am just SCREAMING MY ISSUES INTO THE ETHER or reblogging people who are Wrong and committed the error of tagging it.

Basically this is how I feel when I head into the tracked tags:

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
XD

Yeah, it seems like a lot of chaos combined with passive agressiveness. XD

[identity profile] chloris.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely understand your impulse to to let everyone know how wrong they are. I've had the same issue there with my show - though I'm happy it's on hiatus now and fewer people are being WRONG about everything. I did make a tumblr recently but I haven't actually used it yet because I want to spend some time playing with how things work there first. I think I'll try to stay with the pretty pictures and avoid the ranting meta. :)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Fortunately I couldn't care less about Sherlock meta. I'm just happy to read fic! I'm kind of glad the show I'm into currently doesn't inspire a whole lot of meta rage. XD

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Tumblr is so bad news for me. I try to not get myself in debates and stuff. But ugh. When people tag their posts hating on my favorite characters, I am incapable of not replying because it's just right there in front of me. I don't go looking for haters, but I can't ignore them when they are taunting me in the tag!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
UGH. I probably would be doing that too. Well, I imagine anyone who posts hate on a specific tag really is looking for arguments. To say otherwise is just ridiculous.

[identity profile] jupisan.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
seems on my own bubble and dont see hate for the shows im seeing or something but i know there is hate. it just doesnt show up dash or i just ignore it and stuff.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a perfect world to live in!

[identity profile] jupisan.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I follow people who ship the same as me and stuff. so thats nice.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't follow tracked tags, in general. I've seen too many people tearing their hair out over stuff that way and just no. I stick to my dash and people I sort of know and thus only rarely run into anything weird or rage-inducing.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Since I don't have an account, I only look at tags. And often it's...

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the whole point for me having an account, the dashboard. :-)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_thirty2flavors/ 2012-06-13 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
yeah that was me for ages. Still is me for the most part because I don't follow too many people.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* That's the problem, really. It's full of a lot of STUFF, but not a whole lot of original content. Original content of varying entertainment.

And I'm not even sure if MySpace is still online. XD

[identity profile] jupisan.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
it is, its just for musicians now.

[identity profile] selenityshiroi.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I pretty much live on tumblr, nowadays.

But the only way to really survive is to find people who you think talk sense and then follow them. And then stay away from the tags. Those people who talk sense will then appear on your dash and you don't have to look any further.

I keep having to go into the tags for The Legend of Korra, because I don't follow enough Korra people...and then the hate and immaturity and misogyny going on in the tags makes me make passive aggressive posts about how awful the tags are!

But it is a very cluttered site and I prefer fic to be on LJ because it's easier to locate it again if you want! I have over 10,000 liked posts on tumblr. I would never be able to find a fic I liked unless I had reblogged it and tagged it (and tagged it with something I'd remember, since you don't have a tag list).

But if you do need to read fic on tumblr, the 'readability' add on for browsers is a must. It strips away side bars and backgrounds and crap and you can change the colour and size of the text etc.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't that the fandom with that one 9-year-old crying on youtube over a ship? That fandom is spectacular. XD

And I can't even imagine ever finding something back on tumblr. There's no way!

Re: Fic. I'm not even sure I want to do that. I'm feeling a bit antagonistic towards an author that would choose to post fic on tumblr.

[identity profile] selenityshiroi.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The nine year old boy that his sister filmed? Yeah...there is a reason why the fandom frustrates me! I just go looking for pretty gifs, occasional thoughtful meta and preview videos. Sometimes a fanart will catch my eye.

Hmm...I know there are some good Glee fics on tumblr (which is the fandom I'm mostly on the site for) but most of the time they are crossposted to LJ, AO3 or the Klaine fic archive anyway. But if there is one thing in Tumblr's favour, it's that it can be quick and easy to post to, so I suppose that may appeal to some people. But I don't think I've come across a fic that I've been linked to from LJ that is ONLY hosted on tumblr.

[identity profile] jupisan.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
that tag scares me but I go to it cause I want to see the gifs damn it.

[identity profile] selenityshiroi.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Normally if a fandom is loopy then I'll just stick to my ship tags. But I can't do that in Korra because I ship Makorra like burning. And, unfortunately, the tag is filled with immature Makorra fans who hate on Asami (and, excuse me? Asami is flawless and I love her), anti-Makorra fans who insist on tagging their hate (which, actually, a lot of Korra fans do and it's REALLY annoying), easily spooked people who are constantly whining about 'jumping ship' and only occasionally something worthy of seeing.

I do keep torturing myself by going into the various Korra tags, but I don't tend to get too far through them before I give up. And then I go and make another post about how Asami is amazing, or how it's possible for a teenager (read: Mako) to make a mistake without hating them for eternity, or how enjoying the ships in a show doesn't invalidate you from enjoying the show as a whole...etc.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen a few on the Sherlock tag that haven't been crossposted. And it's like WHATEVER, DUDE. I DON'T NEED YOUR FIC ANYWAY. :D

[identity profile] selenityshiroi.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I mean I find the fic on Tumblr via LJ comms and it's also being posted on the other sites. There are SOME fics I've found through tumblr but mostly through people on my dash reblogging them. And most of them are drabbles or gifts to other tumblr users or reaction fics to gifsets or a comment by someone or a prompt.

[identity profile] papilio-luna.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
My reaction every time I go to Tumblr:

Which is rarely. I don't have an account and basically hate everything about it. Except every once in a while the fact that Tumblr doesn't realize that file sharing is not entirely legal and that their chosen platform has no ability to lock or hide posts. I still shake my head at their stupidity, but I'll take the links, thanks.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
XD

OH MAN, THE FILE SHARING. I gape at the amount of posts I see that involve file sharing. JUST HOW STUPID ARE YOU PEOPLE??

[identity profile] six.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same. It's hard to keep track or hold proper conversations. There's no filter. Tumblr is only good for the pretty, and ego-stroking. Post a fully finished drawing you worked hours on on dA and get only a handful of comments, post a half-assed colored sketch on tumblr and get a thousand notes. (。_゜)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, tumblr does seem to inspire the lowest common denominator, doesn't it? Although I shouldn't talk. My tumblr would probably be full of OMG OTTERS CUTE *REBLOGS*

[identity profile] six.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
lolol mine would be OMG CUTE PUPPIES AND CATS *REBLOGS* XXXXXXD

IS YOUR JOURNAL HUNGRY? HAVE YOU BEEN FEEDING IT? I KEEP HAVING TO POST OVER AND OVER AGAIN BECAUSE IT KEEPS EATING MY REPLIES.

[identity profile] larxene-12.livejournal.com 2012-06-12 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I never really understood the point of tumblr, tbh. I thought it was just a site for posting pictures of things xD Kinda pointless, imo.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-13 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it just doesn't seem like it's good for much other than pretty things. :D

[identity profile] rosaxx50.livejournal.com 2012-06-13 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Tumblr is for the pretty and for amusement when no one posts on LJ. That is all.

Unfortunately, my main fandom right now is dead on LJ and active on tumblr. So...

/WILL DEFEND OTTERS TO THE DEATH.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-13 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you've gotta go where the stuff is! OTTERS FOREVER.

[identity profile] doctahr.livejournal.com 2012-06-13 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't look at tags, but if you can find a few good people to follow, it can be pretty good. Start off with Orbitingasupernova, Winterinthetardis, and LJ's very own Shinyopals for some good D/R. OaS gets into debates with people sometimes though, so if you'd like to skip that, then just start with the other two. :)
What's your tumblr URL? :)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-13 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have a tumblr. (Yet?) I've just been looking at tags whenever I've gotten the urge for pretty things. :D

[identity profile] shinkonokokoro.livejournal.com 2012-06-14 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
There's fun bits of tumblr. I've been able to stay away from wank and stuff. It's a place I've found enjoyment and many pretty things... lol
I tend to stay away from the bad-logic and ignore it...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-06-14 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a wise choice.
