A food post, for some reason.

  • Where have you been all my life, Dry Soda? Curently drinking the Vanilla Bean soda, and it's absolutely the perfect level of sweet for me. In other words, hardly at all. But yet there's no artificial sweetners! FINALLY.

  • Trader Joe's Unexpected Cheddar. Yummy aged crumbly cheddar! (Was picked up yesterday afternoon in a quest for English food to eat with Sherlock Holmes 2. THIS MAKES SENSE. And Cheddar is sort of English. THIS ALSO MAKES SENSE.)

  • Ponzu Sauce! Yeah, it's been around forever, but I've sort of shied away since I'm not wild about soy sauce on its own. But I had it on some salmon yesterday, and YUM. I MUST FIND SOME OF MY OWN. (Said salmon was at lunch and not at the English-fest dinner, which consisted of cheddar and a curry dish. SENSE.)

  • All this food talk and I sort of was wondering what they'd eat at Watson's wedding.

"The wedding breakfast is composed of stewed oysters, galantines, mayonnaise of fowl, cold game, ices, pyramids, and all the knickknackeries of confectionery." ~ Some Book of Victorian Stuff.

They were really into mushing up meat and covering it in slime, weren't they? You...you all don't do that anymore, do you? I would think I would have heard about it if everyone in the UK was eating jellied meat on a regular basis. Just checking though.

That Dry Soda looks neat. I wish I could buy it here to taste it. I'll have to keep an eye out for it the next time I'm in the states.

I'll definitely be trying other flavors.

Gelatins were a way of preserving cooked meat before refrigeration. There were ice boxes but they were small. It's funny; if you look at The Joy of Cooking even from 20 years ago there is a whole chapter on gelatin. Now, in the most recent edition it's basically the theory of making it from bones, if you have to, but very few recipes.

Huh. I had no idea that gelatin was used as a preservative!

This show ("The Supersizers Go...") airs sporadically on Cooking Channel, and I'm always fascinated by the many, many utterly unappetizing ways of preparing meat the English apparently devised over the centuries. (Disclaimer: I'm sure other cultures are just as gross.)

And oh, man, that soda looks delicious. I bet it's great for cocktails.

Man, that tinned meat does not look appetizing. XD

It probably is! One thing I hate about most cocktails is the sweetness.

Pork Pies are about the only thing I can think of that is popular today and involves meat and gelatin (there tends to be a layer of gelatin between the meat and the pastry). Not my favourite thing in the world, but certainly edible.

Also, Mmmmmmmmmm...cheddar...

I had to look up Pork Pies. Looks interesting. I'd at least try a piece.

If humanity had perfected transporting things through the internet I could have given you a piece right now! I had one with my salad this evening and I've only eaten one cut quarter.

Thanks for posting about Dry Soda. It looks really interesting and they sell it all over the place where I live (apparently). I'll have to check it out.

It's just perfect for me! But I'm someone who likes iced tea with about 2 granules of sugar. :D

Huh. And around here tea usually comes with a lemon on the side without even asking.
