it's not even a particularly evil crime syndicate - book!Irene only came on Holmes' radar because she was protecting herself - it's more of a Robin Hood sort of venture. Mycroft occasionally notices he's missed a few hundred pounds but puts it down to a particularly expensive dinner he forgot about. Most people who lost something don't even notice. The fact that there is a sudden increase in the number of ex East End prostitutes going on secretarial courses is also not noticed.

NOT THAT I'VE THOUGHT THIS THROUGH OR ANYTHING.
