Internet polls are serious.

Rose won the BBC America Doctor Who Companion poll!

First of all, YAY ROSE! :D As much as I like other companions, Rose will always be My Companion.

Second, butthurt abounds. The usual reasons on why Rose cannot possibly be the popular choice with sane fans and/or fans who aren't 14 year old girls with David Tennant posters on the wall. All I have to say is MWAH.

Thirdly, I accidentally took a 4 hour nap and I feel like crap. DAMN YOU, HEAT. Although maybe it will rain this evening? It's looking weird outside.

BTW, the popularity poll wound up like this:

1. Rose
2. Sarah Jane
3. Donna
4. Leela

(Really, Leela? I don't hate her by any means, but I'm always sort of surprised at how popular she is. Also, not sure where Martha or Amy finished out.)

I think Leela placed so high because like... there were only like 8 companions to begin with. Rose, Martha, Donna, Amy, Sarah Jane, Jo, Leela and Ace. So all Leela had to do was to beat Ace (IMO ACE SHOULD HAVE WON THAT MATCH) and Jo. And that is how she placed fourth. The seeding for the polls was really stupid.

But even though the whole thing was a mess, I still feel smug that Rose won.

SUCK IT, HATERS. LOTS OF PEOPLE LOVE ROSE AND YOU'RE JUST GOING TO HAVE TO DEAL.

I voted for Ace! Boo.

Oh, it's just a silly internet poll, but I do feel validation when Rose wins stuff like this too. EVEN THOUGH SHE ISN'T THE CHOICE OF REAL FANS.

Awww, good for Rose.

ARGH, THIS HEAT. I'm trying to summon the energy to get off the couch. Don't think I'm going to find it though.

*FLOPS*

I just have wall A/C instead of central air, and it's just not keeping up when it's this hot.

LOL, I have NO AC. Just a fan, and all my doors and windows open. It's cooled off now, though.

UGH.

Way to go, Rose!! ;) Yeah, I'll admit I felt my silly little fangirl heart grow about ten sizes at the results. I'm also amused at the resulting butthurt, but well, that was always to be expected.

Even after watching many other companions, I think I always come back to Rose. She and Donna have my heart and when it comes to the companions, they probably always will. My husband and I were talking about companions (we were getting on the discussion of Jenna and wondering what she was going to be like) and I realized that one reason I like Donna and Rose the most is that Rose's stories seemed to bring out what I liked to see in the Doctor, character-wise (compassion, a little bit of almost-romance, fun, and later her memory brought out a pained side of him that I did find interesting to see him deal with), and Donna -- or Catherine Tate, rather -- brought out what I thought was some of the best in David Tennant; they were all absolutely brilliant together, but yeah... that's kind of what I really loved about those two in particular.

As for Rose, I think the comment from the article's author also made me remember that Rose was a risky character, and the show's revival was riding on her success just as much as the Doctor's (if not more). And what can I say, two stories that absolutely made me realize how much I was in love with Doctor Who centered on Rose ("Father's Day") and then the Doctor himself ("Dalek"). *shrugs*

So whiners can whine and haters can hate all they want, Rose did it for a lot of us. ;)

And YES THIS HEAT IS KILLING ME!! XPPP

That's one thing I tend to like most about a companion - when they're able to bring out different aspects of the Doctor. Not that that should be the only function of a companion, but I tend to focus on their interaction with the Doctor the most of anything.

Rose brought amazing things out of the Doctor - like RTD said one, she humanized him a lot. (For good or bad, that's how I was introduced to the Doctor, and I just don't care for him being all cold and distant.)

[identity profile] moonphased.livejournal.com 2012-08-12 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm absolutely with you on that one. Not the only function, but it is certainly one of the things that I think I appreciate the most in the companions. Rose is someone that I really liked because of her interaction with everyone she came into contact with -- Jack, Mickey, Jackie, Pete... I loved Billie's chemistry with all of her co-stars. She always made me smile (...well, okay she often made me cry, too, but that's beside the point!!! *LOL*)

^_^

Billie had FAB chemistry with everyone. There isn't anyone she interacted with that wasn't amazing, IMO.

Personal companion lists are so completely subjective. It'd probably be a miracle to find someone with the exact same Top 10. :D Mine would probably change over time as well. Right now I think I'd go with...

1. Rose
2. Martha
3. Donna
4. Sarah Jane
5. Liz
6. Ace
7. Amy
8. Barbara
9. Romana I
10. Jo

And the Doctor's name is probably something ridiculously long or something like "Chuck." XD

I LOVE THAT ROSE WINS THESE POLLS

ROSE ISN'T EVEN MY FAVOURITE BUT FUCK ALL Y'ALL WHO INSIST ONLY CRAZY INTERNET FANGIRLS LOVE ROSE

AND TYVM INTERNET I AM A 22-YEAR-OLD WOMAN WITH DAVID TENNANT POSTERS ON MY WALLS

I love Donna, but if I had to pick two companions to make the top two, I think Rose and Sarah Jane are good choices. Especially since LOL apprsaently someone was getting butthurt about Sarah Jane only winning because she'd been on New Who and so New Who fans, scourge of the Earth, were voting for her.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-08-12 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
XD I don't even get outraged at the outrage anymore. It's the same thing every time full of rage and FEELINGS about what proper Doctor Who is and means and ROSE IS NOT IT, NOR ARE HER FANS. LOLOLOL.

And the "well they're NEW fans" things cracks me up. Especially when they talk about people not knowing what's what because they haven't seen everything. NICE TRY. I HAVE SEEN CLASSIC WHO. TRY AGAIN.

In my experience Amy ranks quite high, top 5, and Martha ranks pretty low, like top 20. Whether Amy retains that popularity after she leaves the show remains to be seen.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-08-14 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
You know, it really has to be a vocal minority. They're just really prolific online. :D Rose really does seem to be popular outside of the internet.

[identity profile] doctahr.livejournal.com 2012-08-12 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
UGH. So many people are mad because a ton of the voters haven't seen the classic series, so it's "biased". They probably should have had a poll of Newho and classics.
I always feel bad that Rose gets so much hate, but then again, she wins these things pretty much every time. I guess she gets it *because* she's so popular and haters are more likely to speak up?

Idk. Never really got all the hate directed towards her.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2012-08-14 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure that if they split the poll, people would still find a reason to hate Rose. XD

[identity profile] logicisfailing.livejournal.com 2012-08-12 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, I saw that Rose had won yesterday - filled me with delight! I'm glad you posted about it! I was surprised I hadn't seen it in any Doctor Who or D/R comms yet - or even on my (admittedly small) F'list.

Damn, I actually do have a David Tennant poster on my wall. (Much Ado - Jay got in for me in London) so I guess that makes me 14? *g* Chicklet is going to have some trouble with that...

That sounds like some sort of Greek tragedy right there. XD
