For some reason I had trouble visualizing a lot of stuff in the 3rd book. There were even some parts that I re-read and I still had no idea what was happening. Maybe it was intentional since Katniss' mind is supposed to be fairly muddled, but still it got a bit confusing.
Like the "pods." Is there any fanart of that because I seriously can't visualize all that. I had no problems in the first two books, but this was strange. Also there were instances where you only know what happened after the fact. For example, shooting Coin. I'm probably not explaining this well, but it bugged.
Oh, and like Prim getting killed. That was a big ball of confusion for me. I want Katniss to be confused, but I as a reader don't want to be confused.
ANYWAY.
Just when you think there can't be anything worse than the arenas, there is. So I guess the Capitol was right in that war would be worse than the Games. It doesn't excuse the Games obviously but the horrors were that much more extreme.
The endgame was Katniss/Peeta, and I approve. Not that I'm OTPish about them, but I think she wound up with the right person. Gale was too much like Katniss - their approach to life was to survive. While Peeta's approach was to live - that there's so much more than simply being reactionary and clawing at everything to make it.
Besides, I think the Games changed Katniss and Peeta in a way that Gale could never hope to identify with. Not even with the war. While Gale understood Katniss in some ways, Peeta understood her in other, and in my opinion, more important ways.
One thing I wish they had more of was Katniss & Peeta's relationship post-war. The trust issues, Peeta finding his way back to his old self, etc. I was a bit disappointed since previously there had been quite a bit of focus on their relationship. Not even romantically, just...all of it. It kind of reminded me of the end of HP. "These people got married, had kids and lived happily ever after. The end." WELL YES, BUT I NEED A BIT MORE.
If anyone has any fic recs that do a good job of covering that, let me know!

That is what fic is for! XD
I wish I bothered to bookmark fic. lol.. Because in THG fandom there is a LOT of terrible fic, but there is an ocassional gem that I read and am like "this is great!" but then I don't bother to bookmark it so I forget about it. lol.
But yes, I think that the fact that things are through Katniss's POV makes things confusing and we're really in Katniss's head, but IA that it did a disservice to the story overall. But at the same time since I see the entire series being about Katniss as a character so I really like actually being in her head, so yeah.
IA that Katniss and Peeta just work together better. Plus, like, Katniss obviously had a thing for Peeta pretty early on, even if she didn't realize it. Like in Catching Fire when they're working on the plant book and Katniss is admiring how long Peeta's eyelashes are... GIIIIRL YOU'VE GOT A CRUSH. I just think that Katniss and Peeta balance each other more.

That was the exact moment when I was all...yep, Katniss has it bad for Peeta and she doesn't have it at all for Gale. I mean, when a girl gets more passionate thinking about one guy's eyelashes than she does about the other guy actually kissing her, her feelings are obvious.

Most of the time I did like being inside her head - she's one messed up cookie. It's just the bits that should have been explained better by the author I didn't really like.
And I agree about the Katniss/Peeta balance. And also the crush thing. I forgot who it was she asked about love one time - if they were in love right away or if it happened over time. Peeta's definitely happened over time, which is quite nice, actually. And pretty healthy (shocking for Katniss.)

OMG that is like, the first bookmark in my tabs right now, haha. I've been halfway through it since forever. I should really re-start and finish reading it this weekend. Those two are my favorite.

So I'm looking forward to the movie. Hopefully it will clear things up for me with visuals!!
I have no opinion either way on Katniss's endgame. I do remember thinking that Peeta/Katniss wasn't particularly satisfying though considering everything in their lives had turned to dust lol.

However I am looking forward to the movie as well. I'm really curious to see how they'll do the clock arena with all the different death zones.
And maybe part of the problem with that resolution was that it wasn't exactly happily ever after? It was bittersweet and came at a price? Sort of like the Doctor/Rose ending - am I happy about this? I think...yes. After I ponder it for a while.

Also didn't Peeta go evil for some of the book? Maybe? Or not. I might have made that up.

Another problem might be that Katniss is frickin 16 and 17 in the books. I mean, who knows what the hell is going on at that age anyway?

IA on the Katniss/Peeta thing. Also Gale is sorta implied to be involved in the Prim thing - too close to Coin's end-justifies-the-means philosophy. I think the last chapter(s) sort of feel like a dream, though. Katniss has her "happy" ending, but it's almost like she's not really feeling it, she's too distant and almost too broken. So it can't be completely happy. It was very fast and just sort of leaves me wondering if it's even real. But I think that tone works because the whole series is so completely fucked up. Whereas HP's final chapter is a lot more HAPPILY EVER AFTER, which (while it isn't perfect) also works for the rest of the tone of the books.
