Thursday musings.

Quite perky today. The fic's getting close to being completed and so I'm hoping it post it on Monday. After which I will run like hell. Really. Okay, I'm actually going on vacation next week, so people can address all fic complaints to the Monsanto Corporation. "Dear Monsanto: YOU MADE THE DOCTOR DO WHAT??!!"

So, perking along this morning, I had a couple of thoughts.
  1. On Jack Harkness: Everyone should have an omnisexual best friend. Not only will you get great fashion tips, but you'll get hit on.

  2. On "England": Okay, so England is the land of engs. I have no idea what an eng is. For all I know, an eng is a giant flightless bird that once lived in a vast tunnel system in Sussex. And on rainy days it would poke its head up out of holes...to get a drink. When people, let's say the Dutch, originally came to the wet shores in 4286 B.C., and saw all those mouths sticking up out of the ground, their instant reaction was, "Bloody hell! Eng land!" You know, having started this train of thought when behind a car with an England bumper sticker, it's probably good I don't carpool.

That's probably the most inventive explanation for my country's name that I've heard, even if it's not likely to be the most accurate *g*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
So not giant flightless birds? DANG. :D

[identity profile] elismor.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 05:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect it's probably "Ang"lang--as in land of the Anglo-Saxons.

Rule Britiania!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Germans!

So revise that to be Germans living in a vast tunnel system in Sussex.

Actually, I think the Angles were mostly from Denmark.

*slinks away*

[identity profile] diavestra.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
no, wait. that's me. crap.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You're talking to yourself, you know.

[identity profile] diavestra.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just another sign of my diminished capacity. Like the replacing of the d in mind with an e...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm actually kinda disappointed it was a typo.

[identity profile] diavestra.livejournal.com 2006-10-13 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh*

Me, too.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I'm not the one with a mine. So how does that work? Do you do your own digging?

[identity profile] diavestra.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, crap. I didn't even look after I posted...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you didn't. :D

[identity profile] josephides.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
From Wiki: 'England was formed as a country during the 10th century and takes its name from the Angles — one of a number of Germanic tribes who settled in the territory during the 5th and 6th centuries. '

Wow! You descended from Thor!

Must be the tea.

[identity profile] fiona-conn.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"England" comes from "Angle Land" ("The Land of the Angles"). It's so called because of the Anglo-Saxons (the Saxons being invaders from Germany). Hence, England. ^_^

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, so the Saxon part was the German part. The Angles part were Great Danes, apparently...

[identity profile] kammgirl.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I seriously think I am more excited by your fic then any other fic. You have done a fabulous job of building up my anticipation.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course, it could all be a giant ruse, all building up to a drabble. And maybe *that's* why I'm leaving town next week. ;)

[identity profile] kammgirl.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. You are incredibly witty and have the great taste of being a shipper. :)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Why, thank you. :) Flattery will get you... Okay, not much.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's why I ruminated over the thing for three weeks, because it's so short! *snort* Tricky thing, misleading hopeful Doctor/Rose fans! *wags finger*

Well, YEAH. I mean, so much debate if the 87th word should be "a" or "the." It matters!

Tricky thing, misleading hopeful Doctor/Rose fans! *wags finger*

And this is why I'm skipping town!

On Jack Harkness: Everyone should have an omnisexual best friend. Not only will you get great fashion tips, but you'll get hit on.

Yay! (I feel compelled to comment to every post lately regarding Jack. My squee levels for Torchwood are really freaking high. Heh.)

On "England":

OK, I about died of laughter with this, so thank you. I needed that, here at work and working on an extremely boring document. *yawn*

HEE! Supposedly it's still airing on the 22nd?

Heh heh. Always glad to amuse. :D

Yes, actually, the first two episodes are airing on the 22nd... which probably means I won't get my hands on it until Monday night, what with actually having to go to stupid work on Monday, and all that. *pouts*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Plus have to avoid LJ on Monday for fear of spoilers...

Eng means creepy or scary in dutch, so I can very well imagine the dutch shouting 'Eng land!'.

[identity profile] noblealice.livejournal.com 2006-10-12 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's 100 percent true. In fact, I think I read a book about that once. It was "The Mating Habits of Engs and other Little Known Facts about the United Kingdom". Very imformative, although a little on the dry side.

I wish I had an omnisexual best friend....I wonder if I can find one on Craigslist?

I would *think* it would be required reading in the UK school system.

Quite possibly. Or you could try eBay.
