Happy happy joy joy!

Writing thought of the day - I like things happy. (You may now be shocked.) Okay, not the syrupy happy as I'd probably hit myself. If I like a character, I want that character to be happy. I've pretty much always been that way for some reason. Yeah, they're fictional, I know. But I still want them to be happy. Maybe that's why with shows, half the time I'll fall into a ship. And I do want that happily ever after. Oh, not the naive fairy tale happily ever after, full of triplets and not a single argument. Life has its ups and downs, but I'd like to see them generally content.

Angst with a point, I can buy - it's often a good road for character development. I had more than a few emails about the ouch-factor when it came to Rose in my recent fic. It's funny, because when I was writing those scenes, I wasn't thinking, "how can I whump Rose emotionally?" but rather the whole time it was "Rose really needs to grow in this one aspect, and this is a path to get her there." Honestly, I was completely clueless that it was "ouchy" until one of the betas ow-ed at me.

But I also think there's a danger of dragging out angst. It can get to a point where you want to shake the character by the shoulders and yell, "get control of your life and/or get the HELL away from this shit!" It's that old "the character's turning into a moron" thing. At least for me.

So I'll probably always be writing generally fluffy fic with possibly a side of accidental angst.

*gives characters cookies and cocoa*

Crap. I'm gonna be one of those old ladies that dresses her cats in hats and booties, aren't I?

*bites lip*

Hmmm, as a reader (there's no way I will call myself an actual writer) if the story is not action based, I'd be looking for plenty angst to keep the tension up.
I may have an outside chance of staying awake (not the writer's fault, only my sleep-deprived existence, *g*) So turn that emotional wringer one more time, hon :)

*snickers*

Well, you do have to find a way to propel the story forward, I won't deny that. Just when you get angst for angst's sake - don't think I could do that. Never generally have an urge for character whumping. :D

See if you ran the world everyone would get along.

You know, I keep telling you it's my own squick issues with that. I doubt anyone else had the problem with it that I did. :-) I'm just sensitive to people potentially humiliating themselves, that's all.

But I also think there's a danger of dragging out angst.

Oh, heck yeah. Or in adding in gratuitous angst, that's there solely for the purpose of beating up on the character. Not because the author dislikes them, mind; it's usually the exact opposite. They just like seeing them suffer, for some reason. There's a whole genre of fanfiction called hurt/comfort, of course. I'm actually quite fond of some of it, but when it gets to be 95% hurt and 5% comfort, that's no good. Argh. When it gets to that point, though, I usually either back out of the story entirely or mentally bitchslap the character. Or the author. :-)

No, there actually were a couple of emails that brought up that whole Rose thing. Not sure if it was exactly for the same reason as you, but more being uncomfortable with the whole thing. One even said they nearly stopped reading because of it. *pats*

To each his/her own, I suppose. And actually I'm pretty sure I'm more in the minority with my fluff love. It seems more people dig the angst, which is fine.

(Just when I see things like angst = real writing and fluff = crap that I get miffy.)

Heh heh. Well, like anything, there's good hurt/comfort and bad hurt/comfort. Some people can pull it off and others...

For the nosy-type people, these were actual emails as opposed to LJ comments, so you don't need to bother looking for them.

(Hey, *I'm* nosy, and I would have gone looking. Heh.)

I feel your philosophy is compatible with mine (i.e. "I like happy endings! So sue me!")

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much! It's like, why not? Why can't things turn out well? What's wrong with that? :D

I like fluffly stories. They make my world a better place.

A lso like some aspects of angst but only if ther is a happy ending - angst just for angst just upsets me - I have enough bad stuff in life, I don't want to read about it as well.

BRING ON THE FLUFF!!!!!!!

Probably shallow of me to say, but the stories that end in tragedy? Not really my thing. And so someone may counter with, but tragedy is life and you're being unrealistic. Well, tragedy does occur in life, but more often than not, fictional tragedy is just as unrealistic as fictional happy endings. Real life is generally somewhere in the middle, if you want to get down to it.

Yeah.

BRING ON THE FLUFF!!!!!!!

WOO!
