Yeah, I lied.
Few things:
- Okay, *someone* just totally took a Futurama plot, including the "queen" making the secret ingredient!! BWAHAHAHA! Slurm: It's Highly Addictive! Sadly, they were lacking Slurms McKenzie, the party worm.
- You know, in the older episodes and in "School Reunion," I don't remember Sarah Jane being that... I can't quite find the right word. She was more personable.
- "Forget me, Rose Tyler" redux. Hmm. Maybe with being more mysterious and distant, they're trying to make Sarah Jane more Doctorish. And then later Maria saying, "She's not on her own. She's got me." Um...
- Aww! Pictures of Harry and the Brigadier on her wall! And later with picking the names – "Harry. Alistair..." :)
- "And then I met him again. The Doctor. And we'd both changed. But it's funny because we were both the same." I don't know why, but that makes me sniffle – after all the years, and in spite of the new face, it was still the Doctor and Sarah Jane. *snuffles*
- K-9!! "Good dog." "Affection noted, mistress." AWWWW!! (Heh. I guess that's one way to explain the lack of K-9. And re-use some DW effects that I'm sure cost a bit first time around.)
- So, did the Doctor give Sarah Jane the sonic lipstick? And why'd Sarah Jane name her computer Mr. Smith? That's...odd. ETA: And where'd she get the computer anyway?? Okay, maybe after The Runaway Bride, the Doctor went to visit Sarah Jane to lick his wounds, so to speak... (Well, it'd probably never happen since the Doctor loves to squirrel all that stuff away, but it would be sweet to me if he had turned to her for a metaphorical cry on her shoulder. *pats*)
- "Well, there was really ever only one man for me. And after that, nothing compared." That pretty much echoed what we heard in "School Reunion," only a bit stronger. (I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If Sarah Jane thought every other man paled in comparison, so that she never had a lasting romantic relationship, and her relationship with the Doctor hadn't even entered that whole romantic aspect, you really think Rose is gonna be able to settle down with someone? She may try it, but I honestly feel sorry for the guy since he will never be able to measure up. He'll always have that invisible measuring stick held up next to him.)
- And now Sarah Jane has a super genius son. Yay? Although I bet it'll appeal to kids. i.e., "I wish Sarah Jane was my mom!"
- It was really was geared towards children. Not sure if I'll watch more or not. However, I am turning into a Sarah Jane fangirl from Classic Who...

I liked the "Harry, Alistair ..." thing too. One thing I can say about RTD is that he definitely knows his old-Who canon and uses it.
And yes, I agree that SJS was more personable in the old days, always trying to talk to people anb be friendly. Then again, she wasn't trying to hide what she was doing either, which I guess she is now. I guess that's opposed to the Doctor who is extremely friendly and chatty, but never really tells you anything. ;)
So while a kids show, I did like it. I guess I'll see where it goes, as my understanding is that it's only going to be a half hour show in the future or something. Not a 45 minute or hour long thing. Might be good, might not, but I'm very pleased for Liz Sladen.

Yeah. Like The Runaway Bride.

I was so tickled! :)

Yeah, maybe. Not sure when she got so nutty though. And you'd think to hide what you're doing, the better strategy would be to not attract attention by being "weird."

You know, I think I'd like 30 minutes better for some reason. Kid-oriented in smaller doses, but still getting Sarah Jane. Yeah, I like that!

Who said Forget me, Rose Tyler? Nine? I am blanking on that scene. And di dSJ say something to that effect to her companion?
no subject
I mean, it's good SJS said it, but it was basically what Nine was saying to Rose in "Rose." "Go back to your beans on toast... Forget me, Rose Tyler." etc.
And then later Sarah Jane talks about being alone. But then Maria says, "she's not alone! she's got me!" And so the parallel between the Doctor and Rose in "Rose" and "The End of the Earth" was MORE than obvious.

I'm not surprised she didn't want to get Maria involved. I'm not surprised at all by the way she behaved. She's within her rights to worry about Maria and crew getting hurt, or worse, killed. Plus, you can't show that kind of thing (i.e., another kid getting badly hurt/killed) on kid's TV -- the kids have got to be strong or else it upsets those watching.
I was personally quite touched by K9 calling Maria, "young mistress". That was definitely very very sweet.
Sonic Lipstick. Bet it was a gift from the Doctor. I have in my mind, this idea for a fic wherein the Doctor gives Sarah her birthday gift one year. She opens it and then there's this look of consternation: it's a lipstick. She'd been hinting that she wanted a sonic screwdriver, and what she got was lipstick. The Doctor, however, does that lovely Tom Baker toothy grin, watching her. "Open it," he says. So she does. It may not be a sonic screwdriver, but the lipstick, as it turns out, is sonic. *Laughter* XD
I'm sure we'll find out why the computer's called Mr. Smith. Maybe's it's the Doc's influence again -- just as he used to call the TARDIS "Old Girl", perhaps this is Sarah being a bit of a copycat. =P
Still, as I say, I thought it was good. =) It may well be geared towards kids, but by that same token, it wasn't really written in the manner of a kid's show, I thought -- it seemed to me to be written in the manner of any normal Doctor Who episode, only involving more young people. I think, if I get a chance, I may well watch more, depending what time and when it's on when the series starts.

Oh, I totally agree - an *excellent* role model for kids/teens. I mean, I mentioned when I was watching some earlier Old episode, something like "I want to be Sarah Jane when I grow up!" Of course, I was being a bit silly, but she really is a very good role model for girls. Not flawless, no. But very, very good.

Oh, me either. At all. I'm glad she did it. (It was the, "wait, this is the same as Doctor Who" that got me.)

That would be hysterical! I can just picture Four doing something like that too since he seemed to love a good joke.

Written, yeah. (Which, you're right - it was good it wasn't dumbed down.) But some of the style was louder and campier. (Actually, The Runaway Bride edged into this realm, which... *shudder*)

Now that I know it's only going to be 30 minute episodes, I may as well.

I've been kind of hoping for that, in a weird way. Not that I necessarily want them borrowing DW themes all the time, but just in general.
I've been getting the sense that SJA is kind of intended to be what DW was in the beginning, when it really was the kids' show that it subsequently evolved away from. The pre-teen/young teen age group it seems to be aimed at is totally where DW's roots are. And those roots still show on occasion, so I'm sure the parallels will continue.

Was Old Who really geared towards that age group? I was getting the impression of *including* kids as opposed to being *written* for kids. Hmm. But maybe it was with the sporadic history lessons. (I honestly don't know the history behind the show.)
But this definitely shouldn't be getting into the inter-personal stuff as heavily, which is way more reflective of the Classic stuff I've seen.
And those roots still show on occasion, so I'm sure the parallels will continue.
Well...let's just hope that Maria doesn't move away and Luke decide to go to E-Space or something...

Then again, I think the line between "kids' programming" and "family programming" maybe wasn't as stark as it is now. Or maybe it never really was in England. Certainly their shows aimed at older kids have generally been more sophisticated and less condescending than what we were getting at the same time.

And thank God for that. So nice to not have "kids's show" automatically equate to stupidity.

But that could just be me. ;)

Didn't even think of that! :D
I just got kinda sidetracked into thinking of this as some sort of weird electronic husband. Not that it *was*, but with all the constant talk about SJS's lack of a man in her life... Oy.

And Sarah Jane is very cool. What would completely sell me on the show would be if K-9 was a regular. :)

Aw I love K-9, such a special doggie.
I would like to think that the Dr had gone to see Sarah Jane, but I guess that would slighlty ruin the goodbye they shared, hm :s

It was so sweet. Especially since I've been really loving watching Sarah Jane in the Classic eps lately.

Yeah, I'm sure it didn't happen. But it'd be sooooo sweet. :)
