Rome? Carnivale?

So thinking about my previous post and shows I've not watched, I think I'd be most inclined to check out Rome. So is it 2 seasons and that's it?

Also, did anyone ever get into Carnivale? I saw the first couple of episodes of that and really liked it. Is that show still going? Or if ended, did they complete the story? Or was it left open-ended? I wouldn't mind watching it all if a complete story has been told.

And in looking up Rome on Netflix, I was reminded of my loathing of Romeo & Juliet (as it popped up on my "Rome" search.) The play, the movies...everything. If you can't figure out if someone's dead or not, you really don't deserve to procreate. Dipshits.

Rome is excellent. One of the actresses from Torchwood is in it. I adore it.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've only heard raves from my flist. May have to Netflix that. Hmm. Maybe this summer when I'm looking for stuff to watch.

[identity profile] geneeste.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I really enjoyed Carnivale. Very odd and unpredictable, and unfortunately only had two seasons (with, if I remember correctly, an unresolved cliffhanger).

But's it's good!

As for Rome, it's on my Netflix queue. :-D

(with, if I remember correctly, an unresolved cliffhanger).

BAH! I was afraid of something like that.

But's it's good!

I really did like what I saw. Very different.

As for Rome, it's on my Netflix queue. :-D

Thinking I'm gonna have to add it to mine as well. After the 30 DW DVDs that is... Heh.

Rome is great, and is currently about 3 episodes into the second season. My understanding is that, as you said, there will only be two seasons. You have to be prepared for some fairly violent stuff, lots of language, and a fair amount of nudity - of both sexes.

I never saw Carnivale, but my understanding is that the first season was much better than the second - at least according to someone at work who watched it.

*prepares*

Maybe I'll just wait until it's all out on DVD and then blow through it all.

I'm a bit turned off at the thought that it was left hanging though.

Rome IS fantastic/great and I'm going add amazing. For an HBO show, they really took it to great heights. The reason it was off the air for 16+ months was because they had to go back to Italy and shoot, build, and redo everything from scratch.

And like [livejournal.com profile] chiroho said: nudity up the wazoo, violence that rivals Quentin Tarantino... yeah. It's awesome.

And yes. Only two seasons.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. Does sound like the production value of this was over the top - probably would want to see it for that alone!

I really liked Carnivale and... what everyone else said, really. It got kind of convoluted, or maybe I just think that because I wasn't always able to watch it consistently. And it's one of those where you'll be totally lost if you don't keep up. Wish it had lasted longer.

[identity profile] jakeish.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
... and I'd never even heard of Rome but I'll totally check it out for the promise nekkidness. Not that I'm a perv or anything.

And it's one of those where you'll be totally lost if you don't keep up.

Oh, totally. I'm sure I'd have to rewatch those episodes I have seen since it's been a while. Which wouldn't be a chore since it was completely enjoyable.

I watched the first season of Carnivale when it came out on DVD. You post reminded me to check Netflix for season two, and lo and behold, it's finally out! I'll have to watch it.

I remember thinking the first season was pretty good, but very weird and creepy. But the atmosphere made it worth watching. (I love the 1930s, I love that whole traveling-around-all-dusty-Grapes of Wrath-type genre, I love small-town-California-in-the-early-twentieth-century.) Plus, Clancy Brown! Who is awesome!

Totally with you on the Romeo and Juliet hate. OMG, they were stupid. Stupid even by teenager standards. And this gets held up as the greatest love story ever told? No way.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)

Yes yes yes and yes!

I know. And what you brought up - the greatest love story ever told - that's probably why I have such a hate of it. If it wasn't consistently held up as the epitome of love, I probably would only have a mild dislike of it. They were morons.

We rented the first disc. My boyfriend likes it and was suprised how accurate they were with names, etc. He has a degree in Classics and History. I fell asleep. :)

The cost is understood to be the reason for not going past season 2, and it really does show every penny. GORgeous. To the point where I briefly seriously considered shelling out the extra $$ for digital premium channels for the sole purpose of watching it in HD.

My very first posted comment about it also remains valid:
Rome continues to be entertaining and liberally sprinkled with nekkid people.

[identity profile] wiliqueen.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
And this reminds me we need to Netflix Carnivale when we have time to sit down and watch it...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoops! :D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I had heard that from my flist. HBO is giving it the axe because it's just *way* too expensive to make.

[identity profile] chiroho.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I heard. I guess it's very expensive to make.

How would you like to own your own S1 of Carnivale?

[identity profile] redathena79.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the box set of Carnivale S1. It was indeed quirky and intriguing. But not really my thing. I keep looking at it going, "Why are you still here? How can I make you not be here anymore?"

Re: How would you like to own your own S1 of Carnivale?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
HA!!! So how'd you come to own it? Had you bought it without watching first?

Re: How would you like to own your own S1 of Carnivale?

I was soooooo bummed when they pulled that bait & switch with putting Indira Varma in the opening credits for that first TW ep.

Reminds me, I must get round to Netflixing some of her movies. I got a big crush on her in Bride & Prejudice. Updated Miss Bingley in a Burberry bikini! :-D

*snickers*

Um...not sure I need to *own* it. Maybe someone else around here would like it?

[identity profile] tv-elf.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I love both shows... Carnivale does end with a cliffhanger, but ooooo what a cliff. It leads to so much possible fic. Rome is just brilliant. Just don't watch with anyone you might be easily embarrassed around. The sex content hits EVERY kink.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)

So it didn't irk you that it would never be resolved?

Rome is just brilliant. Just don't watch with anyone you might be easily embarrassed around. The sex content hits EVERY kink.

Heh heh. No watching it with the parents then, eh? :D

[identity profile] tv-elf.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, it's hard to explain without giving it all away, but... You know BSG's New Caprica season ender? Where everything you knew went completely out the window? But the new possibilities were true mind f*cks? Yeah, that.

And oooooh no. Not with parents.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I think I could deal with that then. I just didn't watch to watch and have it lead nowhere.

[identity profile] aristaea.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Rome quite a bit, but as a long-time real-life Roman fangirl, I wouldn't suggest it if you're picky about historical detail. They do a rather good job of portraying Roman life, but they get a lot of things blatantly wrong and several of their main characters are just sort of randomly invented. I kept yelling at the television because I thought they were going overboard with creative license. It's a beautiful show to watch, though.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2007-02-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, everyone else has already praised Rome to the heights, so I'll spare you except for one warning: the majority of the characters are jerks. Very human, very believable, and frequently very likeable jerks, but still jerks. Just FYI.

Also, so with you on the R&J hate. I will admit to a fondness for the ballet version, but that's because I love the music Prokofiev wrote for it, and you don't actually have to hear R&J whining idiotically. :-)

[identity profile] kammgirl.livejournal.com 2007-02-03 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
She was also just in a very short lived show over here called 6lbs. I loved Niobe and Suzie. Waah.

[identity profile] elaminen.livejournal.com 2007-02-03 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I've been told really good things about Carnivale.. let me know if it's any good, I've never even tried one episode (like I really need another show to be obsessed with!)

Quite. I can see how the balcony scene, etc., are romantic if you like flowery prose, and I like the basic story of two kids from feuding houses falling in love, but the stupid at the end just ruins it. If Juliet had had a bad reaction to the sleeping potion and actually died from it or something, I'd be much more inclined to like the damn thing.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-02-03 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I might be picky about historical detail if I was familiar with that period, but I'm not.

Awww.

Have never seen that ballet. Hmm.

Well, what I saw so far was really good. 1930s depression-era mysticism going on with very big Good vs. Evil themes.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2007-02-03 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The balcony scene, in particular; the dancing and music combine to make it seem much more romantic than it actually is.

*nods* 3lbs. was here too, and also very short-lived. I think they pulled the plug after three episodes?

Luckily, I couldn't bring myself to be interested in it from the commercials -- it just looked like just Yet Another Quirky Medical Show, and I'm not particularly grabbed by the ones we already had!

In one way hate to see that happen to any show and put people out of work, but at least I can hope she'll wind up on something I actually want to watch...
