DW: The Dalek Invasion of Earth (One, Susan, Ian, Barbara)

  • Finally! This was the first One episode I've seen where he actually seems semi-Doctorish. He hauled out the science mumbo-jumbo and problem-solved beyond what others could. About time! And there were no naps! Woo! (Okay, he was knocked unconscious a couple of times, but I'm not counting that.)

  • DALEK BOWLING!! YES!!! When Barbara was approaching the checkpoint in the truck, I was yelling at my TV, "RAM THEM!" And then she did! I was immensely pleased at that moment.

  • All the exteriors were pretty cool, especially the Daleks scooting around a deserted London. But I guess the reappearance of the Daleks was a Big Frickin Deal and no wonder they took the time on this episode. Actually, there were quite a few cool bits of cinematography.

  • Daleks: We will hollow out Earth and put in a drive system so we can pilot it anywhere in the universe.

Me: SWEET! DO IT! *cough* I mean, that's bad. Very bad. End of all life as we know it.

  • The Susan departure was really very, very sweet. The Doctor realizing she was in love and so taking off without her so she could have that life. Very sweet. I'm now sorta curious for other "for your own good" times the Doctor's done with Companions - doesn't necessarily have to be with a departure. I just think they show off his soft side. *pats him* I know of Susan and the two times with Rose. (Which didn't stick. Heh.) Gimme some others!

I loved this arc. It was excellent. I cried at the end. When David said he knew...he knew you would never leave him I just got a lump in my throat.

And he was totally right - she wouldn't have left him and always would have felt obligated to take care of him. Not that she didn't love him, but... For the Doctor, who much of the time is very self-centered, it was an unselfish act.

I.... I don't think any of the other companions get left behind for their own good. I'm sketchy on early companions, except either Dodo or Vicki who has some sort of breakdown and gets left with a family in London, I think.

Liz just got written out. Jo left of her own accord, Harry left of his, Sarah got dumped for her own good--ah-a! Leela left of her own accord, Romana left, (both of them got the dog). Adric went bang, Nyssa left, Tegan left, Turlough left, Peri... we don't know, really. Pip and Jane were never clear on whether the Time Lords made him abandon her or not. Kamelion died. Mel left. Ace left and came back, Benny left to get married, Chris left, Roz.... er, the last four being book things, so, technically, Mel was the last to leave him in TV canon.

You know of any other kind of "for your own good" moments - aside from departures? Although, I guess a departure would be the biggie. I'm not really thinking of many other scenarios where the Doctor was trying to do what was right for the Companion (even if the Companion didn't want it), other than a departure.

Liz just got written out.

*sniff*

Sarah got dumped for her own good--ah-a!

Oooh, yeah. Although, that was more necessity than an old softie Doctor moment.

(both of them got the dog).

No, don't leave, K-9! (I remember seeing an icon a looong time ago - must have been of Romana - saying something like "bitch got my dog!" Heh.)

so, technically, Mel was the last to leave him in TV canon.

And what a weird departure. "I've suddenly decided to leave for no apparent reason. Byeee!!" "Um...okay."

Hmmmm.... The first thing to spring to mind (I'm sure you'll be shocked) is "Arc of Infinity," when Nyssa steals a gun and tries to break him out of the execution chamber on Gallifrey. (Yes, all 90 pounds and utopian upbringing of her. I hate to say it, but I kinda crack up every time...) It takes some doing to convince her that she's only going to succeed in getting herself condemned along with him.

In way, it's the cornerstone of Seven and Ace's relationship, really -- he's forever taking them into situations at least partly for the purpose of dealing with some issue of hers, like her fear of the house in "Ghost Light." Not sure that actually qualifies as "old softie" moments, tho. *wry g*

I'm sure there are others, but I'm blanking. Will have to let you know if anything comes to mind.

Oooooh. Can't wait to see that! Yes, this is the kind of stuff I was wanting - where you see the Doctor putting the Companion first.

Heh. Sounds more therapist to me as opposed to an old softie moment, but is definitely "Companion first" material and so it still qualifies as sweet. :)
