"Ford, I think I'm a sofa." "I know how you feel."

  • Saw the movie Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy last night, and while it wasn't as good as the book or the audio, it still was fun. (How can you not love a story that has mice in charge of Earth?) The movie dragged a bit a couple of times, oddly enough during the action sequences. But maybe not "oddly" since what makes HHGG really work is the quirky narrative and dialog. Also made me wish (again) that Douglas Adams had written more Doctor Who episodes. (Still love the nod they gave in "The Christmas Invasion.") Oh, and in the movie? Arthur/Ford all the way, baby! :D Oh oh! While they couldn't have had everything in the movie, they should have said about the towel being the most useful thing in the universe! They were even carrying towels around, but you were never really told why.

  • Watched the last half of Slings & Arrows. Outstanding! I would really recommend this whole 6-episode series. There were only two things that got a little cartoony for me - the exit of the other director, and the "evil" business woman - but everything else was just...refreshing. This show can spin on a dime from laugh-out-loud funny to dramatic moments that felt very real. And it was weird - I was actually getting a little sniffly when they were performing Hamlet. Loved this quote: "And I don't want to be insane. I refuse to be insane!" "That's the spirit!"

The Leisure Hive (Four, Romana, K-9)
  • You blew up K-9!!! Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! And then just left him blown up! WAH! Okay, so the Doctor or Romana didn't actually do the blowing up, but he got salt water on him and boom. POOR K-9! (Although it was amusing to see Romana dropping K-9 on the Doctor's lap while he was snoozing with a "this is *your* fault!" The Doctor rightfully has a reaction of "buhwuh?")

  • The Doctor got rid of the Randomizer. Thank goodness. So my guess is we'll see a showdown with the Black Guardian soon.

  • I'm not sure if it was the writing, directing or the editing on this one (my God, could they have held 2nd unit shots longer? The unending beach pan! *cries* The shot of the round something-or-other. (I'd cry, but I'm too confused.) EDITING, people!), but a lot of it seemed like kind of a muddled mess. You know, I think a lot was the direction, since much of the time I had a "what the *hell* am I looking at?" reaction. You'd get a shot of some random object that you'd *know* was important, but there was no visual context for the object. Took me until about half the show to figure out that these little ball things were on the aliens' heads. And the above-mentioned round something-or-other - I finally decided it was a top-down exterior of the building...I think.

ETA: Read a little blurb on wiki. Apparently this episode was the start of a new series where a new producer came on board, who wanted to get away from the more "kiddie" aspect of DW that had been more prominent in recent series, and up the production value. While I can see the difference in styles between the Three era and Four era, and can understand wanting to go back to more of that Three-era style, I boggle if this was the result.

  • Since the Doctor was physically aged 500 years, I'm going with the notion that the Doctor *does* physically age, just very very very very very very slowly. (Unlike what Ten said with "I don't age." Which I *can* see him saying to Rose since from her perspective, he never would age.)

  • Heh heh. I like it when Romana goes all geek!girl. Never mind if these people should have this kind of technology, there's an *experiment* going on, dammit! :D I've said in the past that a lot of times Romana just seems to be a repeat of the Doctor, but they *do* differ in this aspect. Yes, the Doctor's a nerd, but Romana's supernerd. *snickers* And being out in the universe for centuries, the Doctor's more aware of the bigger picture and how technology has an impact. Romana's very much, "Oooh, wave particle accelerator! But you've done it wrong. Here, let me." *pats her* (Ha! The Doctor would just mock their wave particle accelerator and then *maybe* give them a hint about what was wrong, which hint would still take them ten years to work out.)

  • I had *no* idea what tachyon particles had to do with making people's heads float above their bodies. Oh, Doctor Who! Don't ever stop bullshitting the science! *SMOOOOCH*

I had only just managed to get "So Long and Thanks For All The Fish" out of my head.

I am partial to the whale, myself. I went with my mother, who had not read the books, and nearly had a seizure and on the way home, every time I tried to explain why it was so funny, I cracked up beyond talking again.

*hums* :D

That's always my favorite part of the whole thing. :D And the petunias at the end of all that is what *totally* makes that. :D

I think, iirc, the round thing is supposed to be the shuttle landing. but, yeah. Noooot very obvious.

Oh, was that it?? Heh heh. There was one shot of it where it lasted what seemed like 3 minutes (which was probably more like 15 seconds.) "Yeah, you keep showing this to me, but I still have no clue what this is. None. Yup, still no clue. You can cut away now, because I'm just not going to get it."

I'm pretty sure they did make a mention of the importance of towels, didn't they? Eh, it's been a while since I saw it, so I wouldn't want to say for certain!

Maybe they did, and I just don't remember. Ford *did* say something about it being very important to keep your towel and then Arthur replied something sarcastically, but I was hoping for that big long Guide blurb about the towel. :D

Oooo, I wish I still had my Marvin the depressed android icon. *pouts like Marvin*

I really loved HHGttG, I mean, the book is so much more indepth, but there are some extras. They included a bonus scene explaining how the bablefish proves that God does not exist.

That wasn't exactly how I pictured their spaceship, but I really liked when they all turned to yarn!

I watched that! :D That wasn't in the book version, eh? I think it was in the audio version though. Pretty sure one of them had it and I often confuse the book and the audio in my mind.

Ha! Yes! And when they were sofas. :D I love the improbability drive!
