Watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) for the first time last night.

I laughed at this movie way more than I thought I would, or probably should have. Johnny Depp - LOVED his version of Willy. And he totally pulled off lines that I'm not sure anyone else could have. "You've really got to stop mumbling. It's starting to bum me out." I *was* eating right there, and yes, there was spitting. And then rewinding to watch again. Another - "I'm sorry, I was having a flashback." "These flashbacks happen often?" "Increasingly... today." HA!!!

I really liked the differences between this movie and the original - if there weren't differences, why bother doing it again? I liked the new theme of "family" as I wanted to just cuddle and squish Charlie's family in the new version. I also like that they gave Charlie a dad in this one (it's been WAY too long since I've read those books, so can't remember if he was there or not in them). But it eliminated Willy becoming this sort of strange father-figure to Charlie, which I remember being part of the original movie. Even watching it as a kid, it was like, "Charlie got a dad now!" But I liked this - Charlie had his family which included a dad, and so could help Willy reconcile with his own dad. I really don't think any of this was in the books. But I liked it. The character of Willy was much more of a kid this way, in addition to being completely loopy but without that rage element that Gene Wilder brought to the role.

So, yeah. Thumbs up here.

Oh, and maybe someday a Vermicious Knid will make it to the big screen. SCRAM! *waits*

Not sure why I've never watched it until now. I think I may need to buy this one.

Never saw this version yet. Sounds like I need to put it on the list.

I'd definitely recommend it.

Johnny's loopy and Gene's loopy are very different. Which was what this movie needed to be different from the first one. It's also really easy to see Johnny as child-like because he is just a big kid. With Gene Wilder it was more like he was a comical geniues. (not that Johnny isn't a geniues)

Yup, totally. I am glad that Johnny really made the character his own, which he would have anyway. But that they weren't afraid to make the character different instead of a copy.
