I agree that Martha appears to have gotten the better deal out of traveling with the Doctor. And, like you, I am a bit more interested in her character when she comes back during the 4th series. It'll be great to see a companion who is competent and capable of saving the world along with the Doctor. Making the Doctor proud in the process.

It's sad, though, that it took a whole year for Martha to finally take her own advice when it came to her crush on the Doctor. That, and I think you mentioned this, but also how we didn't actually get to see her development during the year she was walking the world.
Yeah. Happy she finally got there, but 1) took way too long, and 2) we didn't really get to see a whole lot of that internal conflict onscreen.
