Fic recs?

I just have not been able to kick my brain into high gear today. I now have diet Coke, but that's about all I've accomplished. *thinks about having some cherries and starting Carnivale*

Not sure I'm *quite* ready to read fic, but...rec stuff to me for Doctor Who. And go ahead and rec fic that doesn't exactly fit what I'm looking for, since other people who run around here might be interested. I don't mind. Fic pimping is fun!

  1. Doctor/Rose shippy fic. (Duh!) Nine or Ten - love 'em both.

  2. Gen fic with a good friendship vibe going between the Doctor and Rose. (Again, Nine or Ten.) I'm thinking your action/adventure fics might lean towards the gen side of things. And sometimes I'm just more interested in them battling bubble-wrap monsters than in console-room sex. I know, I'm WEIRD.

  3. Beyond the Doctor and Rose, I don't really have a preference or a "will not read" if other characters make an appearance. But the only OT3 I'd *think* about reading (depending on mood) would be Doctor/Rose/Jack. There are probably plenty of good OT3 fics out there with other characters, but this is about ME. Mwah.

  4. However, I have a very big "do not want" for character bashing, even if it's a D/R fic. I don't care who it is - Martha, Donna, Romana...even Peri (who I actively dislike) - if the point is to pound a character and/or make them ridiculously OOC to bash, I will be making frowny faces.

  5. Multi-era fic! With Rose! The ones I read over a year ago were fairly cracktastic, but I didn't care. I just luurve Rose meeting past incarnations and/or other companions. (Ship or Gen)

  6. You know, I used to hate when I saw this particular request in other fandoms, because it sounds so shallow, but no angsty-ending fics, please. No, the Doctor and Rose don't need to ride off into the sunset astride a unicorn at the end (unless it's a battle unicorn, and then AWESOME), but I just can't handle anything like 'separated for all of time' or anything. I mean, it can have angst in it, but...just not the end. Yes, shallow! I DO NOT CARE. Their current canon state is depressing enough as it is. I'm just not wild about depressing fics in the first place. I never have an urge to go read something to have a good cry. However, go ahead and rec if you've found a good one you want to share with others, just give me an angst warning or something. :D

  7. Doctor/Rose reunion fic. (I think I'm even more interested now after everything in S3, than after Doomsday.)

  8. Just so you know, I refuse to read WIPs. Back in the day, I read too many that were never finished. They'd better be complete, or I'll get out my nerf bat.

  9. Did I mention the multi-era fic? Because OMG.

  10. ETA: Feel free to rec anything from G-rated fic to NC-17-rated fic. Maybe throw out a mention if it does have the graphic sex in it? I mean I don't mind, but maybe someone else will? And with all the weirdness in LJ-land lately, maybe it's best to slap a warning on something? Right, pretty sure I'm over-thinking this in trying to be sensitive to someone who doesn't want to read NC-17 fic so they don't get blindsided.

I read a really great one where Nine and Ten teamed up to get Rose, but then it turned smutty and I always feel a bit weird reccing smutty fics to people...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, go ahead and rec! *goes off to edit about ratings*

[identity profile] makesometime.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh great, now I have to find it! :P

I'll work on that and get back to you :D

[identity profile] makesometime.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh look at that, it wasn't so hard!

A Most Ingenious Pair of Docs by kitsunealyc, NC-17

I hope it's as good as I remember, I think it fills a lot of criteria because she interacts with both Nine, who she hasn't seen for ages, and Ten as well. And I know you said no OT3, but Nine/Ten/Rose doesnt' really count as they're the same man? Maybe? :D

[identity profile] ivydoor.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
These are Pre & Post Doomsday. They are smutty, and are linked together with the author's own canon, so you need to read the one before the other. And both are fairly lengthy.

Pre-Doomsday: Tha Calm Before the Storm
Reunion follow up: Voyages of Discovery(p)

For multi-era:
Companion Sense is one of my favorites.

[identity profile] jennsthedevil.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely jumping into your conversation, but is this the Nine/Rose/Ten fic you're referring to? It's super smutty and probably the best Nine/Rose/Ten fic I've ever read. I'm such a sucker for that pairing...it's the best of both worlds. :)

[identity profile] makesometime.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, you would have totally saved my behind if I hadn't just found it myself. Thanks for taking the time to help though :D

[identity profile] jennsthedevil.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
No problem. It just counts as a double rec, right? :D

[identity profile] makesometime.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Totally, now I feel better too, as someone likes it as much as me!

Fic reccsssssssssss!!!!!

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I read Days and Hours by [Bad username or site: rose_acicularis / @ livejournal.com] yesterday and it was REALLY good. Reunion fic with a new twist. Made me sort of blubber and giggle at the same time. I'm pathetic.

What's Left by [Bad username or site: ninamazing / @ livejournal.com], which is a few missing scenes during S2, but is one of those fics you want to wrap up in a shiny bow and hug. And I think it fits the whole "Doctor and Rose battling bubble-wrap monsters" thing. Also, I *adore* [Bad username or site: ninamazing / @ livejournal.com]. :D

And, wow. I really hope some other people rec you fic because I so don't have very many saved. Stupid fandom and all its badfic. *glares at it*

I'd rec some of my own stuff, but I've always thought that was tacky and weird, so I'll refrain.

[identity profile] jennsthedevil.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I loved it and I rec it at every available opportunity. There are so few fics featuring the pairing and this one is so well written and delightfully smutty that I can't help reccing it.

[identity profile] amarettolime25.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
goldydollar already recced Days and Hours, but another one that I love by rosa_acicularis is Sins of the Flesh.

Postcards to Gallifrey is a lovely multi-part fic where Rose and the Doctor live on Earth for awhile with a defunct TARDIS.

This series is actually Master/Lucy, but it's good, so read it.

A lot of my favorite fics are in my memories, so people can take a look if they so wish. All though some of them lean toward the angsty endings, just so they're warned.

[personal profile] shaela 2007-07-07 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite Doctor Who stories

They’re in chronological order (by the date they were posted), and they’re all… well, they’re all stories I wouldn’t mind my mother reading, if you know what I’m saying. Unfortunately, they’re also pretty old, so you might’ve read them already. I’ll see if I can find any others.

P.S. This is fun. I’m glad you’re finally letting us do it (pimp stories to you, I mean).

P.P.S. Start with Father Christmas.

[identity profile] dettiot.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a list of my fic recs here. I've broken down the list pretty well, so you can get a sense of what you're getting yourself in for, and I do note whether the story is WIP or not. So, happy reading!

[identity profile] joyfulfeather.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to guess that angsty Eleven and a 16-year-old Rose isn't your cup of tea, but in case someone's interested (it's really very good): I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor by [livejournal.com profile] svilleficrecs. NC-17.

By the same author: Indomitable, Ten/Rose, early season 2 fluff!fic with kissing.

And now I'll go back to bookmarking all of the other fics people are reccing. So glad I won't have to go looking myself!

[identity profile] solielle.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, recs! Well, I've written some Doctor Who fic, but it's not that great. It's....fairly gen. I'd say about as shippy as the show. I don't think it's that great, though.

Entlizha is really good, some good reunion fic, some good missing scenes. And you can tie most of them together! There's sex in pretty much all of them, and In the Dead of Night might have that angsty ending you're trying to avoid.

Darcie is also really good. Most of her fics are gen adventure stories, and once again "about as shippy as the show". Maybe slightly more. Also three smutty stories which tie into each other.

Duncan Johnson also wrote pretty good Nine era gen. He's also doing a series with the Eight Doctor and Wilhemina Harker as companion, but I haven't read it yet.

For individual fic recs, there's TARDIS of Babel, Notes from a Bed of Rose's, Splinters Under the Skin, and, Time, Roses, and the Wolf (Bonus: That's multi-era, but the ending is...a bit sad in light of Doomsday.) Oh, and Really Wild Things (that's the last part, it links to the first three. Reunion fic, featuring Arthur Dent! It's slightly hilarious.

I could probably come up with more but...that seems like quite a lot right there.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I love it too. It's fab.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I've just got home, but I'll work up a list for you later, OK?

[identity profile] misssara11.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm insulted that people on my f-list *glares above* didn't rec me. And if they read this, major sucking up is in order because they said they loved it when the reviewed.

Okay, first the magnum opus, The Bits In Between. This is all the chapters. If you want to make life easier, the master list is linked at the bottom of the page, as it the soundtrack.

Then, all my other stories. They are mostly one shots.

They are all Doctor/Rose and very shippy. Bits is Nine and Ten, the rest is Ten. They are all clearly marked ratings-wise in the headers on the site. They run the gamut from PG to NC-17.

And then, there are all Who LJ fic recs, some of which you already have.

Enjoy!

I don't often manage to remember fic I like so I always mean to bookmark it but seldom do (hence why at one point I had to go on a massive quest through Teaspoon to find what I have since learned was your fic).

Anyway here are a couple that did manage to bookmark:
-One Hundred Years Or More: It's painful to read (in the angst sense, it's well written) and there times when it hurts to go through that with the characters because the emotion is captured in such a raw form, but it ends well (although...in light of this finale it may be worse to think about now that you've made me think about it).
-The One Adventure He'll Never Have: So so cute; angst and fluff and action and Time Babies and some sex and a happy ending (there's even a couple of sequals that are rot your teeth cute).

Both links go to the final chapter in the series, but from there you can access the earlier chapters.

[personal profile] jedi_of_urth 2007-07-07 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but maybe we all just assume she'd read that because everyone should read Bits (also, does that count as a happy ending, you give us so much fluff and smut and awesomeness and then it ends at Doomsday and everyone cries again).

[identity profile] misssara11.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Beileve it or not, there are some people who never read it! And she can just stop at the Army of Ghotst chapter.

Still, you should all say how wonderful I am because my ego needs feeding.

[identity profile] katesutton.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, my WORD. I'd forgotten about Really Wild Things. I LOVE it. Nine is so perfect.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
OK, here goes. *cracks knuckles* Oh, I'm going to throw a couple of Jack-centric fics in here just because they're so good.

By [livejournal.com profile] aibhinn:
Never Alone - this is a sentient!TARDIS story, Ten/Rose, NC-17.
That's DAME Rose Tyler to You!, Ten & Rose, Gen - Rose has to use her wits to save the Doctor
The Slow Path, Jack, Rose - this takes off from that line in "Utopia" about Jack going to see Rose

By [livejournal.com profile] travels_in_time:
Five Times Jack Harkness Never Interfered With Rose Tyler's Timeline (and One Time That He Did) - Jack & Rose, based off that same line in "Utopia"

by [livejournal.com profile] dark_aegis:
The Brigadier-verse - A pre-Series 2 series featuring Ten, Jack, Rose, the Brigadier, and Unit. Some sex (Jack/Ten/Rose; don't worry, the Brig is not involved), but mostly plotty.
I echo someone's rec for The Sense Series; these feature Ten, Rose, & Ace. Basically gen.
Burns Like the Night - Jack/Ten/Rose, although nothing explicit. Written before Torchwood aired, but involving Torchwood. Post Series 2. Not really multi-era, but still sort of has that feel to it.
Darkness Falls - Nine/Rose, nothing explicit; adventure, essentially gen. Just finished reading this, it's really good.
Oooh, I'd forgotten about this one. Four of a Kind - Ten, Rose, Ace, Seven. Adventure, Gen. Lots of fun.
Measure of a Time Lord - Nine/Rose; the Doctor doesn't remember who he is and Rose helps him find himself. Adventure.
The Wizard's Consort - Ten/Rose, King Arthur, Jack as Lancelot. Sort of multi-era in that in the Seventh Doctor episode "Battlefield," he's told he'll be Merlin someday.

By [livejournal.com profile] the_sandwalker (Asano):
Just One Day - Eight/Rose, Nine/Rose, Ten/Rose. Yeah, I know. It's too confusing to explain it - timey-wimey stuff. :-) NC-17
Desert Rose - Ten/Rose, Jack - NC-17 romance, adventure (more adventure than romance).
I'm not reccing this, because I haven't read it, and it may be part of a series; I'm a little confused. But on the Whofic site it says it's completed, it is multi-era, and she does write well, so here it is if you want to take the plunge: The Hands of Time - Ten, Rose, The Brig, Jack, Gwen Cooper, Martha, and several others.

Um. Is that enough? Wow, that's a lot.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and that Jackie POV reunion fic I mentioned in your post the other day: Five Things the Doctor Reduced Things to Science (and One Time He Didn't) Part 1 and Part 2

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I second the rec for the Master/Lucy - it's really good. It's what I recommended last week.

[identity profile] solielle.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
The Hands of Time IS completed....but it looks like it's another one of her multiple fic story arcs, and it ends on a massive cliffhanger. It's good, but I'm just saying: massive. cliffhanger.

[identity profile] solielle.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was trying to rec things that might be overlooked. And Really Wild Things is so sweet and funny. And Nine is great in it.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Argh. That's what I was afraid of. She seems to have several of those going, and I don't really want to read any of them until they're completely 100% done. *pouts*

[identity profile] grimorie.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
*bangs head*

LJ ate my rec list.. I'll just post when I don't feel like killing my computer meanwhile rec post here -->

Also second Amy Wolf's stories.

[personal profile] shaela 2007-07-08 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Change Your Mind” and “So Let the Bells Ring Out” are two postscripts to “The Christmas Invasion” that I liked. “Change Your Mind” is focused on Jackie, and “So Let the Bells Ring Out” is focused on Mickey, so neither of them is particularly shippy. But they’re both really good.

Blue Roses” is… hard to describe, but I liked it a lot. Which (as I’ve said before) is a bit surprising, considering the author.

All This Season of Snow and Sins” is probably my favorite Jack-centric story. It doesn’t quite fit into canon, but it’s so good, that almost doesn’t matter. (Her other stories aren’t bad, either.)

Oh, and that reminds me—all of Seanan McGuire’s Travelogue for Exiles stories are very good. Old-school, but good. “The Terminus of Prayer” and “Look and Remember” are on my list of favorites. “Look Upon This Sky” and “What Does the Sky Reply?” aren’t, because they don’t quite fit into canon. But they’re still worth a look.

As far as post-“Doomsday” reunion stories go… well, a couple of people have already mentioned “Days and Hours” and “The One Adventure He’ll Never Have,” and I’ll second that. I also liked “Tracking Torchwood.” (I lovedAnd Dismantle the Sun,” but that’s Rose/Alt!Doctor, so it’s useless when it comes to post-season-three depression.)

my current fav

This series by hippiebanana132 here on LJ is just one of the best things I've ever read (and I read a lot of Doctor/Rose fic). It's a series of stories in response to the eps of Series 3. Some take place in the past, some are the future, and the two for HN/FoB are actually a retelling where the TARDIS takes John Smith to a 18 year old Rose...that chapter is heartbreaking, but once you read the rest of the series it's all ok. Very happy ending.

Everyone should read. It's beautiful.

[identity profile] earenwe.livejournal.com 2007-07-09 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen this listed so far and wanted to put it up, but I have to warn you that it's a bit of a heart breaker, but in a somewhat good way. Features Ten/Rose with a fantastically strong characterization of Rose. "Worlds in Conjunction", Marylane.

I have some other recs, scattered across computers, so maybe I'll have a go at putting them here sometime.

[identity profile] kb91.livejournal.com 2007-07-11 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much for the rec of "Really Wild Things". I'd never seen this story before, and I'm over the moon after reading it. The first three parts had me grinning with pleasure, but then I got to the conclusion and realized how it all fit together and ... good god, that was brilliant. Completely and totally brilliant, and it even stays in canon! I'm blown away and giddy and ... man, loved it. Just loved it. And love you for reccing it. *g*

Now I need to mem this entry so I can read some of the other stories you've mentioned. Whee!

Those are all my DW recs. I don't think anything in there breaks any of your do not want rules, and there should be several that fit your desires. I try to only rec the very best, and I stand behind these stories.

In particular, check out the multi-era stories. I found some good ones.

I know this is way late, but I'm catching up on DW stuff after finishing S3.
