Pthththt!

Okay, this is spreading around the flist now, and so I may as well throw my 2 cents in...

Complete Season 3 Doctor Who DVD cover
(Warning: S3 spoilers on the cover.)

Personally, I think it's a bit crappy. It's no secret that Martha wasn't my favorite companion by a long shot, but still. She was the companion during S3 and in every bloody episode! She *really* should be on the cover.

Arg! This is going to wind up being 1) Rose's fault, 2) BP's fault, 3) Rose fen's fault, 4) Doctor/Rose fen's fault, or 5) ALL OF THE ABOVE, isn't it? *hides*

(Not that I was planning on buying S3 DVDs anyway, no matter who's on the cover.)

You forgot to add that it's also the fact that ZOMG MARTHA?! She's BLACK! Or something... Geez. *shrugs* It's a pretty cover, what with Pretty Boys and all, but still. WHAT? Come on.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
*hides from impending wankstorm*

Also, I have a theory about RTD wanting to get his Doctor/Master summer ficathon off the ground (the one he started under a sekrit identity), and so threw them on the cover. ;)

It'll probably end up being the slashers' fault, or there will be yet another conflagration about how teh ghay has ruined DW. Personally, I'm just sad cos we probably won't get that cover in the US. Woe.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-01 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It'll be *somebody's* fault, that's for sure.

[identity profile] rjrog77.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Options 3/4/5 seem to be the preferred one from what I've seen.

I'm not a huge Martha fan either, but you're right - it sucks that she's not on the cover.

Having said that, I've seen it posted (somewhere) that the Ten/Master cover is a Limited Edition and Martha will be on the regular cover; obviously I can't say how truthful that is!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)

I just don't get it - she really should be there. And of course I'm thinking that this will only give people another excuse to haul out their D/R shipper whacking stick.

Hmm. That would make more sense.

I'm hoping this Limited Edition business has some truth in it.

And of course I'm thinking that this will only give people another excuse to haul out their D/R shipper whacking stick.

Yeah :(

I've noticed that the Doctor/Rose (and Rose in general) love has disappeared from, say, the likes of Outpost Gallifrey.

Rose is a dirty word. You ROSE LOVER!!! Translation: You stupid 12-year-old half-wit who is unable to figure out that Rose is gone and therefore need to stop acknowledging her existence (*kicks Romana WIP under the carpet*)!!

Shhh. We're not supposed to talk about that. ;)

From the look of it, S3 looks to be more like the first season box but it's a very basic picture so it could be replaced with something else later on...

I have to say though, I'm not anti-Martha (just anti-URL, simpering Martha) but I'd get the pretty boys cover if I was buying the set!

I guess it could. But it does seem fairly "designed," from my link above. Like it's the real deal.

*snickers*

Oh, I actually do LOVE that shot of the Doctor and the Master. It's fun. :D But I'm having a "where the hell's the companion?!" moment.

[identity profile] kammgirl.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] boro_girl's comment I have to say though, I'm not anti-Martha (just anti-URL, simpering Martha) but I'd get the pretty boys cover if I was buying the set! is exactly why I think they made the cover this way. John Simm like David Tennant has people swooning, put them on a cover and fans will gravitate toward buying it. Sucks for Martha, but the BBC like other companies are about sales not sensitivity.

[identity profile] bluevolvic.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
not a big Martha fan , but i think that she should be on the cover
as she is a companion.

i do like the pic of Ten/Master , and i think it would be great as a limited edition or on the inside cover :D

This (http://community.livejournal.com/lifeonmartha/316540.html) seems to suggest that she will be, if not on the Limited Edition one then the regular one.

I know I had a tough time finding a Rose action figure when I was over there in November last year. <g>

Re: Martha and the Season 3 box-set cover

[identity profile] kammgirl.livejournal.com 2007-07-30 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yay. I still remember Billie being interviewed by a famous interviewer in the UK. His name completely slips my mind. He took out her action figure and said, they made you look liek a grumpy lesbian. LOL

Re: Martha and the Season 3 box-set cover

[identity profile] pixiesio.livejournal.com 2007-07-30 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! All action figures suck. I don't think I've ever found one that's a good likeness of the actor.

[identity profile] kammgirl.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I think she should be on the cover too. I just can understand why the BBC did it this way.

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
If they're going for a pretty boy cover then where's Captain Jack???

I figure someone out there is doing the OT3 with the three of them.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you gotta think the OT3's out there. :D

(Not that I was planning on buying S3 DVDs anyway, no matter who's on the cover.)

I'm feeling like this too, I want to be annoyed for the Martha fans, but they're not making it easy. That post linked to in the comment above mine? Someone says the crazies are laughing at them. Having not seen any of this myself I could easily believe it to be them being over-sensitive, but I bet there are some people out there laughing and giving the rest of us a bad name.

The John Simm one will sell better in the end anyway, unfortunately. It's the one I'd buy if I cared.

I'm still waiting for someone to point to me where D/R shippers (aka, "the crazies") are pounding on Martha fans or Doctor/Martha fans in this "ship war." Heavy emphasis on the quotes, there.

I...have no idea. I honestly have no desire for this DVD series - maybe I'd go for the Master cover? I did like SoD.

I...have no idea. I honestly have no desire for this DVD series - maybe I'd go for the Master cover? I did like SoD.

I bought the most recent DVD, with the two John Smith episodes and Blink as I think Blink will be something I put on a lot to scare myself. I wish there were extras on the single DVDs but since you can get them on YouTube, it seems a bit silly to buy a box set of episodes I didn't like just for them!

[identity profile] rjrog77.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the one I'd buy if I cared.

I know the feeling. There's no compelling reason (other than completeness) for me to buy this box-set - I can get the episodes I actually want to watch again (the Human Nature/Family of Blood two-parter) and for the first time (Blink) on a vanilla DVD.

Anyone else not really care about the box-set?

I'm such a commentary/special features buff that at some point I'll certain want this set for all that even if episodes wise...I care a lot less. And yes, if given the choice I'd much rather have the Doctor-Master one rather than the Doctor-Martha one, but if there had been only one option I would have expected it to have Martha on it, just because that would track with expectations.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
*facepalm* I've been incognito most of the weekend. I can't believe they're doing this. John Simm was in 2.1 episodes. Martha was in 13. COME ON. I'd have issues even if it was John Barrowman (although damn, that'd be pretty, too), since JB was only on for 3 episodes. Stupid BBC. *shakes fist*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it is just a limited edition cover? Or there will be a couple different ones? (I'd love to simply see the pose with Jack.)

Actually, I would have been more upset (unsettled) if it had been Jack, as much as I love Jack, he's still a companion, and he was in fewer episodes, therefore if they were going to do a companion, Martha should have been it. However, the Master is something different, and even though he was in a small number of episodes he was very important to the story; so it's hard to say that Martha should have been there more than him (she probably should have, but it isn't as clear cut as with Jack).

[identity profile] debs7.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care about it either way. I'm just pissed that a friend started carrying on about the fact that because she's black she's not on the DVD cover and I'm sick to death of her saying everything about Martha is about racisim.

I may be slightly over it right now.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-07-29 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, hopefully it'll be the case where this is just a limited edition. The companion(s) should be on the cover, period. Hmph.

Yup that's pretty much what I feel about this cover. I've heard about a Limited Edition with no cover art as of yet and, though I didn't particularly like Martha, I hope that she's on the cover for that one.

Like you I wasn't planning on purchasing The Series 3 box, ( I've joked to my sister that the only way I would buy it is if Rose and Ten ended up together at the end of the fourth series... or you know sometime in the future when Ten turns into Eleven or something)... anyway, if I were to purchase it I'd probably go with the Ten and Master cover.

I've been strategically avoiding [community profile] who_daily to avoid reading about reactions from the other side. I wouldn't be surprised if they went for the #5) All of the above answer though

Ha! I expect that it's actually John Simm's fault for being so popular. I can imagine that Marketing would want to capitalize on the fact that the LoM star was on Who. Sucks for Freema and Martha's fans, but it makes sense, business-wise.

It's certainly not the first time that a hugely popular reoccuring character has gotten a cover over the regulars (I remember being miffed because James Marsters got more face-time on the covers of S3 of Buffy than a couple of regulars and he was only in one episode the entire season).

Yeah, probably has a lot to do with that. (We just won't talk about the fact that I had no clue who John Simm was before Who.)

Actually, I’m starting to wonder how we (and the writers) define “companion”-hood. And whether it corresponds to anything in the actual story. But that’s probably reading too much into a marketing stunt.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-07-30 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
People have been telling me that there's going to be more than one cover for the DVD, and so I'll be satisfied if Martha's on the other and this is a limited edition or something.

[identity profile] azarsuerte.livejournal.com 2007-07-30 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Weirdly enough? I like it and am not at all offended on Martha's behalf.

The Master is a HUGE part of Doctor Who's history. Maybe not Simm's Master specifically, but if you go into the overall involvement of the two CHARACTERS in the show, actors totally aside? Yeah, the Master deserves it. If it had been the Daleks or the Cyberman, that's different, because they're a *group* of characters, and choosing just one generic Dalek/Cyberman over the companion would feel like a slight. But this is the Master, the Doctor's oldest friend AND worst nemesis, and he's a recognizeable individual. And if not the Master, then I'd have probably picked Jack over Martha just because at this point he too has more history with the show than she does. And if they were going to do a cover without the TARDIS? Then yeah, there darn well better be someone with almost as much history taking her place! I love Martha to pieces, but she doesn't qualify.

I'm sure it was a tough call, but IMO it was the right one. *shrug* But then, I would've been thrilled if the S2 DVDs had Sarah Jane on the cover and she was only in *one* episode. ;-)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-07-30 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
I guess I'm more looking at it as someone who was in every episode and someone who was in it a smidge more than two, rather than how it relates to what character's been around longer. Not that I'm disputing your statement that the Master is much bigger in the realm of Whoverse than Martha, mind you.

[identity profile] azarsuerte.livejournal.com 2007-07-30 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
*nod* I understand that. And believe me, no one appreciates the irony of which sides you and I are taking in this debate more than I do. ;-) But it's just...I don't know. It just doesn't bother me. Maybe it's not just because it's the Master but also because I like the design, the juxtaposition of the two with their respective screwdrivers.

I think my ideal box set for S3 would've had the Doctor, Martha, Jack *and* the Master, but if it had to be the Doctor and one other, I'm more than happy with the Master. :-)
