Monday the 13th

  • I watched the first 5 episodes of Rome this weekend. How addicting is this show? It's a soap opera set in ancient Rome! The sets, locations, costumes, acting - incredible. (Although I could have done without the realistic head surgery. EW.) With every single character there's something you both love and hate about them. *quickly throws disks back in the mail to get the next batch*

  • Wish this persistent cold would go away. Or at least the ear part of it. It's left me feeling slightly dizzy much of the time for the last several days, which isn't fun.

  • Oh, fandom. Logic and you generally aren't friends, are they? I refuse to have to suffer fools - gladly or otherwise. Instead, I opt to try and ignore them.

  • Wahey! Captain Jack action figure from Last of the Time Lords!

    Oh, I crack myself up.

But since I'm on the subject, you know, it's been about a month or so (right?) since the finale, and I've still yet to figure out the floating thing. Or the restored body through good vibes thing. But more specifically, the floating thing. Floating AND propelling. Vrrroooommooooooom.

I really rather wish they'd knock off the "god" stuff, or at least tone it down next series. Yes, yes, everyone worships the Doctor. We get it. Although, it is quite interesting that the more he's worshiped and deified - even from those closest to him - the more lonely and disconnected he becomes. And the more questionable his judgment becomes at times. Yes, I'm still looking at the FoB ep. Yeah, yeah, I'm fairly certain all of this was deliberately done this series, but it makes me sad for his character. Le sigh.

Yes, doesn't it just suck you in? Everything about it is fantastic, and I found Season 2 to be even better than Season 1, which is pretty impressive considering how good S1 is. (And now do you see why I think town crier guy is so cool? *g*)

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
And sadly, most of the sets that burned down at Cinecitta last week belonged to Rome. Which apparently may also throw a spanner into plans for Who's planned visit to ancient Rome.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's a shame.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It is! The writing's great, the direction's great. Even when there's humor in it, it's intelligent! (And I think I've only seen the town crier about three times yet, so I've no fast opinion of him.)

[identity profile] dettiot.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Although, it is quite interesting that the more he's worshiped and deified - even from those closest to him - the more lonely and disconnected he becomes. And the more questionable his judgment becomes at times.

That's why I had such a problem with Last of the Time Lords. Because the Doctor isn't supposed to be worshiped--or at least he shouldn't be. Because he's not infallible, he makes plenty of mistakes. But if he's a god, he doesn't make mistakes, but he oh so clearly does. [joins you in looking at the Family]

I think the god stuff came about because they wanted the Doctor to really feel cut off from everyone after losing Rose; I hope that the next series is about learning how to still grieve loss without losing your connections.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I think he hates being placed on a pedestal, although it was something of a necessary evil in this instance. That's always been one of his definite squicks about his own people - that they seemed to expect/need that sort of thing from 'lesser' species (the Master being an extreme example, although even the good guys like Romana seemed to hold variations of the same attitude).

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
True - that's something he's hated about the Time Lords. And he's kind of becoming what he hates.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but the fact that he seems to be doing it kicking and screaming is what makes the difference - when he starts to enjoy or encourage it that's when I'll start to worry, versus just feel bad for him.

Note that I don't count his vengeful episodes with the Racnoss and Family of Blood to be quite in the same vein. I think of those as him taking his Dalek-related frustrations out on creatures he can get to.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
To me, the thing with the Rachnoss almost looked like he *was* getting some sort of weird enjoyment out of it, which I thought was a bit freaky when I saw it.

He's definitely not where the Master was in enjoying it and wielding power, thank goodness. The Doctor just seems...lost right now. Directionless. He's fine at times, and other times he skates off into places that are not good.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
...looked like he *was* getting some sort of weird enjoyment out of it, which I thought was a bit freaky when I saw it.

Oh, I agree on both counts. But he wasn't enjoying it for the sake of lording it over someone. More like he was enjoying being able to resolve the situation to what was his satisfaction.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd have to watch it again, but seemed a bit more "burn baby, burn" to me.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I meant... in both cases more of a 'f*ck you bitch(es) and the ship(s) you rode in on' versus 'lo, behold my might and power.'

Another perfect example being what the Doctor!watch was telling John Smith versus that whole 'prepare to receive my majesty' shite the Master!watch was telling Professor Yana.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Because the Doctor isn't supposed to be worshiped--or at least he shouldn't be.

*NODS*

I think the god stuff came about because they wanted the Doctor to really feel cut off from everyone after losing Rose; I hope that the next series is about learning how to still grieve loss without losing your connections.

Hope you're right, although he still needs something/one/ones to connect with. He tried to connect with the Master - shoot he was going to *make* the Master stay with him. So he is grasping at that kind of thing - something that gives purpose to his life. Whether or not he'll find it, or becomes fine with his utterly lonely lot in life, remains to be seen.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, yeah, I'm fairly certain all of this was deliberately done this series, but it makes me sad for his character. Le sigh.

Don't worry, next year every episode will be a happy one. The Doctor won't ever be sad or abuse his power. And at the end of it, Rose will come back and make with the happy naked cuddling. YAY!!!!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG. If you're going to be drinking, you need to bring enough for EVERYONE. Because I wish to join you in this happy place.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It is entirely possible that all the fandom craziness, the speculation, and all-around madness has finally made me snap. In response, I am now going to live on LaLa land - a magical place where bunnies hop and Doctor Who is a happy and quirky show that makes you feel good!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Doctor Who a happy quirky show?? The HELL you say! I am totally moving into your magical place. *puts in forwarding address notice*

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
*hands you fruity drink*

I can promise that this place will continue to exist through the Christmas special. However, once the fourth season actually starts, it may crash and burn. You might want to buy really good insurance. *nods*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
*wonders if an insurance policy covers the Doctor inflicting eternal torment*

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
This may be quite an expensive insurance policy. Meep!

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Or he and Donna will almost run into himself and Rose in ancient Rome, and he'll end up wanting to chuck himself under a bus again.

If they set the Rome ep anywhere in the vicinity of The Stone Rose (see my journal entry), I sense angst-fics aplenty.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Or he and Donna will almost run into himself and Rose in ancient Rome, and he'll end up wanting to chuck himself under a bus again.

GACK.

You clearly must come and join me in my LaLa-bubble. It is pleasant here. There are fruity drinks with twirly straws! (You know the kind of straws I mean.)

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll take a pina colada water ice, thanks. :)

I'm not for excess angst m'self, but I'm just thinking of how this past season's gone.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh WOE.

[identity profile] kammgirl.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Rome freaking rocks. And you are right. The characters are so layered. I will miss it so much. The actor who plays Verinus is in a new time traveller show coming out this fall. And of course Niobe was Suzy in Torchwood. I hope you feel better. Ear infections are horrible. Ignoring is the best policy. I am getting there.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
So far, I'm really enjoying the show. Can't wait to see the rest of it!

And sometimes it is hard to ignore. Sometimes my first reaction is to be shouty, but then realize it wouldn't make a difference anyway, because it makes people happy to think shippers took off simply because of people disagreeing with them (because obviously I can't handle seeing Doctor/Martha or Doctor/K-9, apparently), as well as believe that places like OSK and SPDN were created in order to spite and WIN THE INTERNET. Yup - those are *exactly* the reasons for everything. /deep heavy sarcasm

[identity profile] kammgirl.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
And I used to react to them and get all shouty as was my way from years of soap fandom, but...this will totally sound like I am sucking up and I'm not, but you kind of helped settle me down in that regard.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Calm blue ocean, man. Words to live by.

[identity profile] ginamak.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Rome is just fantastic, and it only gets better. Mmmmm. Titus Pullo.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't WAIT! The first episode or so I spent most of it trying to figure out who was who, but I'd really gotten into it by episode 3 or so.

[identity profile] ginamak.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I remember having to go back and rewatch the first episode after I had a better grasp of the characters. In a way, I'm glad it only lasted two seasons--that way it never had a chance to go downhill like so many series do. I think it's one of the best things to ever air, honestly.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That is an advantage of shows that have been cut short. And I know I'd highly recommend it, and I've only seen 5 episodes yet!

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Rome is fabulous. I love it. And the second season DVD set is just out this week, so you could just keep watching straight through to the end. :-) Sadly, I seem to have deleted my Rome icons in favor of Doctor Who ones. Heh.

Although, it is quite interesting that the more he's worshiped and deified - even from those closest to him - the more lonely and disconnected he becomes.

Yeah, see, this is what I don't think some people are getting. Do you really want someone disconnected running around saving the universe? He might save the universe, but there might be collateral damage because he just doesn't care enough anymore. Brrr. *departs for [livejournal.com profile] goldy_dollar's LaLa land*

I've already got the second season in my netflix queue - I kinda planned it to start watching the whole thing only after S2 came out. I'm getting spoiled by waiting until everything's over and watching it all at once. :D

Yeah, see, this is what I don't think some people are getting. Do you really want someone disconnected running around saving the universe? He might save the universe, but there might be collateral damage because he just doesn't care enough anymore. Brrr.

And this notion was even highlighted in TRB. People got hurt at the wedding reception. The Doctor not only didn't notice, but when Donna brought it to his attention, he outright dismissed that they were in any way relevant to the situation. No more of that "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry" in him, or even telling Donna to stay and help. That focusing on the human (or even non-human) element was always Rose's thing - everything about her made him look at things on a personal level. But losing her and it's back to, "Gotta think of the bigger picture," and "Busy life. Move on."

*departs for goldy_dollar's LaLa land*

Welcome!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Thre really is just so much good about it, isn't there?

[identity profile] samkicksass.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The fella was into the show when we got it on Netflix. He has a degree in ancient history so I was getting the background for characters...but it was fun! He said he was surprised how accurate it was.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-13 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's really cool! I was kinda wondering just how accurate it all was. I mean, obviously it's dramatized and I'm sure the personal storylines are pretty much fictional, but it's nice to know that the parts involving the civil war and politics are more accurate.

LOL Love the sold separately part. Has plenty I'm sure!

Yeah, yeah, I'm fairly certain all of this was deliberately done this series, but it makes me sad for his character. Le sigh.

It was bad enough he had to deal with losing Rose but being considered and making himself out to be something to be worshiped... RTD put The Doctor through the ringer this past series.

This coming series though WILL be different. Mor happiness and I'm wishing/praying hoping that Donna will help in brining Rose back for a bit so we can have VeryHappy!Doctor back. Yep! She'll slap him and tell him to snap out of it and do something about getting Rose back! The Doctor did say that he once liked the impossible, well the impossible is waiting in a parallel universe so he better roll up his sleeves, get his glasses on and start working... again on a solution.

*wonders if maybe she's gone a bit too far this time* ^_^"

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'd settle for marginally happier Doctor (or at least one not so quick to end it all) next series.
