O_O

First thing that comes to mind? STOP ENCOURAGING RTD, DAMMIT!

And the second thing? Futurama's Church of Trek.

Third thing? ...

Fourth thing? ...

Fifth thing? There'll be no living with RTD now.

Sixth thing? I have no icon that fully embodies this post.

Seventh thing? ...

ETA: Spoilers for S3 in the comments.

I am literally without words.

*head desk*

I have no words.

I'm trying to find words amidst my hysterical giggles, but sadly, they're just not coming.

*Looks totally nonplussed*

Yeah, what of it?

I wrote an essay in my first year of University about Doctor Who and how it tied into theology and ethics. *Laughs* I remember including a bit about how the Doctor is akin to a messianic figure at times. XD

This just makes me *really* want Donna to beat the crap out of him in S4 for some reason. Is that odd?

*ERMS as well*

They're missing the boat. You want needlessly Messianic? Try the Book of Jack, chapter 13:

"And lo, Abaddon aroes from the depths of the Rift to slaughter the Welsh. Then Captain Jack did say to Gwen, 'Take me to yonder field where I shall do battle with the Son of the Beast,' and Gwen did say, 'But thou shalt not survive, immortal though thou mayest be!' Yet she obeyed, and lo, Captain Jack and Abaddon met in the fields of Cardiff, and Abaddon sucked mightily until the sexual magnetism of Captain Jack slew him.

"Thereupon Gwen and the Torchwoodians did take the body of Captain Jack, which remained pretty, to the depths of the Hub, and Gwen sat with him three days until he arose to hug Tosh and snog Ianto, and Owen fell upon his breast weeping. 'Dear friend, I do forgive you,' said Captain Jack, 'for thou wast misled and have many Issues.'

"Then the Sacred Hand of the Doctor began to glow, and Captain Jack was spirited away by the TARDIS, and his team did see him no more until the following season."

At least, that's what my translation says.

The whole "god" theme in New Who has made me twitch, quite frankly. A LOT.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-09-13 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

RTD is like a gayer, crazier, and more evangelical Tom Cruise. And you can't even hide behind the sofa, because he's out there, jumping on it.

It's been done.

Also, here.

O.o

I. Um.

So it's okay with the church that the Doctor is being portrayed as a Christ-like figure? Even held up as a good thing? Really?

I just... I don't see the point they're trying to make by doing this. Other than drawing young people to church by showing clips from a popular TV show. Because what, showing them how God-like the Doctor is is going to get them to come to church? Really?

... ... ...
... ... ...

Um...

...Really?

But...I want them to stop turning the Doctor into a god figure, not have churches feed the imagery. I know there are some similarities, but really when Jesus commits genocide a few times and then throws people into eternal torment just because they kind of tick him off, and leaves a good friend behind because of something that isn't his fault but he's prejudiced against, then we'll talk. I'm not even religious and I' don't want that in a messiah figure.

That's gorgeous, and really really funny.

Um. *scratches head* These people did see the end of FoB, right? I'm not exactly up to snuff on the Bible, but I don't remember Jesus being scary and sadistic. Maybe I could buy into the messianic parallels a bit more if there weren't so many examples of why Lonely God Doctor is a Bad Thing.

[identity profile] ivydoor.livejournal.com 2007-09-13 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! I wanna be a part of that religion.

*is torn between 'Canon is Flexible' and 'Needlessly Messianic' icons*

That's SKERRY.

BWAH!

Maybe when people get there, the message will actually be: "The Messiah: You're Doing It Wrong."
