First thing that comes to mind? STOP ENCOURAGING RTD, DAMMIT!
And the second thing? Futurama's Church of Trek.
Third thing? ...
Fourth thing? ...
Fifth thing? There'll be no living with RTD now.
Sixth thing? I have no icon that fully embodies this post.
Seventh thing? ...
ETA: Spoilers for S3 in the comments.

Yeah, what of it?
I wrote an essay in my first year of University about Doctor Who and how it tied into theology and ethics. *Laughs* I remember including a bit about how the Doctor is akin to a messianic figure at times. XD

"And lo, Abaddon aroes from the depths of the Rift to slaughter the Welsh. Then Captain Jack did say to Gwen, 'Take me to yonder field where I shall do battle with the Son of the Beast,' and Gwen did say, 'But thou shalt not survive, immortal though thou mayest be!' Yet she obeyed, and lo, Captain Jack and Abaddon met in the fields of Cardiff, and Abaddon sucked mightily until the sexual magnetism of Captain Jack slew him.
"Thereupon Gwen and the Torchwoodians did take the body of Captain Jack, which remained pretty, to the depths of the Hub, and Gwen sat with him three days until he arose to hug Tosh and snog Ianto, and Owen fell upon his breast weeping. 'Dear friend, I do forgive you,' said Captain Jack, 'for thou wast misled and have many Issues.'
"Then the Sacred Hand of the Doctor began to glow, and Captain Jack was spirited away by the TARDIS, and his team did see him no more until the following season."
At least, that's what my translation says.

I. Um.
So it's okay with the church that the Doctor is being portrayed as a Christ-like figure? Even held up as a good thing? Really?
I just... I don't see the point they're trying to make by doing this. Other than drawing young people to church by showing clips from a popular TV show. Because what, showing them how God-like the Doctor is is going to get them to come to church? Really?

... ... ...
Um...
...Really?
But...I want them to stop turning the Doctor into a god figure, not have churches feed the imagery. I know there are some similarities, but really when Jesus commits genocide a few times and then throws people into eternal torment just because they kind of tick him off, and leaves a good friend behind because of something that isn't his fault but he's prejudiced against, then we'll talk. I'm not even religious and I' don't want that in a messiah figure.

And yeah. The Doctor is a *wretched* Christ-figure (despite RTD's love of messing with the theme) for the reasons you said. He also denies mercy. He's unable to properly express love - any kind of love. He moves on without noticing the consequences of his actions, unless they later come to bite him in the ass. I mean, I adore the character of the Doctor, but if he's the Messiah, the universe is screwed.

Heh. No. Don't remember any "No second chances" either.
Maybe I could buy into the messianic parallels a bit more if there weren't so many examples of why Lonely God Doctor is a Bad Thing.
Very Bad Thing.

Now, that's not to say that the theme of good (not the fluffy sort of good that is typically thought of, but the reall, powerful, it can burn you up from the inside out kind ) in Doctor who isn't a big one. And a valid one.

Yeah. A lot of it is just so... *throws up hands*

Totally. But when it starts going off like in LotTL with the heavy-handed, WTF Jesus Tinkerbell Christ, and turning poor Martha into a disciple, it all starts feeling rather ooky.

*gasp*
That's why he's completely obsessed with human kind and never tells anyone his name...he really *is* Jesus and doesn't fancy another crucifixion. *ponders if that's a t-shirt in his extensive wardrobe - Crucifixion? Been there, done that*
Does that make Rose Mary Magdelin or Martha? (though given the standard thought of what her profession was, my money would be on Jackie)
