I'm old skool. I have a 4GB mini and a 4GB nano... both lime green. I'd love to have one of the new iPods but I jsut spent about $2,500 on a new laptop (that's how I got the nano).
None of the above! This is much better - does videos, pictures, and text files, too, and handles DivX videos natively, instead of having to convert crap like iPods do.
However, I will admit after the death of my iPod after only 1.5 years of ownership, I'm more than a little scarred by Apple. (Whereby "scarred" I mean "I will never give them any of my money ever again, except for the odd dollar for a song that featherjean buys and puts on CDs for me.")
Yeah, the 30 GB is a little small for the player, but there are similar ones by another manufacturer, Creative Labs, that also have a pretty good reputation, I think, and have bigger hard drives. I'm an open-source geek, so I wanted something with support for ogg music files.
And to answer your lifespan question all in one go, my video iPod has been the most successful of all my ipods, lasting I think 2 years. I did step on it once though, but it got replaced under warranty. They're good at fixing that up for you.
I have a 30GB (Black) Video Ipod which I love and adore and has been with me for around 2 and a half years now. :D
I voted for Black because it's a great color, imo. But Silver also looks great and is probably easier to hide any future scratch marks that eventually happen.
Still can't get my mind around the whole 160GB. Didn't even know that they were available. I think I'll end up upgrading to the "touch" ipod when it's available for at least 80GB and has been in the market for awhile (Can never tell when they'll decide to lower the prices and who know what can happen to a new product).
I think it's the 160 GB that finally made me really think about actually getting one. Just because I'd be using it for video and you NEED big for video.
I voted black, because if I'd spent the money, I'd have gotten the black iPod video. Instead, I decided I wanted to keep part of my escrow refund check, so I bought the very slim, sleek, and stylish 4GB iPod Nano in blue ... and still haven't filled the thing up.
I had a 512MB 1st Generation iPod Shuffle, which was still going strong after 2 years. I did start having a few problems with it, but I think that was more due to the firmware & software problems (they don't really support the 1st gen Shuffle anymore).
If it weren't for the fact that I needed something that could manage a playlist, and 512MB simply wasn't enough space for me, I'd have kept my shuffle. Instead, I opted for a Nano (see previous comment). I've abused the heck out of it, and it's still going strong *knock on wood*. I'll have had it for a year come February.

I may just put my money towards a big fat Lifebook instead.

But for now I'm going to enjoy my lovely ipod. :D
