  • I cut my fandom shipper teeth on Sam/Jack in SG-1, which is why so often I'm bowled over by canon in DW. When Sam was heading off to Atlantis, there was a picture of Jack with her stuff. Well...it was probably with her stuff. Or maybe it was in a trash can? It's hard to tell! *flails*

So after 10 years S/J shippers are left wondering 'suitcase vs. trash can' and if a picture of Jack means *anything*. That pretty much sums it up.

Contrast that to S3 of DW where you have the Doctor lamenting Rose's loss multiple times and even the blatant human-form drawing of her. I don't know what to do with myself when TPTB are shippier than me! I'm used to cursing their name and shaking my fist in their general direction for being coy for a decade. Not where I look at something I wrote and decide that canon once again out-shipped me.

I'm not sure why I have this strange issue with DW - TPTB of this show have said 25-ways to Sunday that they intentionally wrote the ship, love the ship, etc. But yet there's this SG-1 mentality in the back of my mind. The mentality of watching S4 of SG-1 with things like "Divide and Conquer" but then six years later I'm still wondering, 'suitcase or trash can?' I think I keep waiting for the DW rug to get pulled out from under me.

Boy it'd be nice to see a happy ending for a change. These days it's all about the tragedy. I'm sick to death of tragedy.

  • I have found all the eyeballs! Ned continued to be completely useless. Dump him, Nancy! However, in spite of Ned this was a fun one. I always wish they were longer, but this one wasn't too short like some of the others. Also, they had a whole bunch of awards you could have won at the end, depending on how you played the game. One was an award for "spending way too much time with that creepy dummy." MWAH. I wouldn't mind if they put a bit more of that type of humor in the game. Speaking of which, why has there never been Monkey Island 5? Oh, the dialog from that!

"Ahh, the middle finger, the most communicative of fingers."

"That pig-shaped bush frightens and confuses me."

    "I'M the Anti-LeChuck?"
"Don't be silly! The Anti-LeChuck is three meters tall, has a prehensile tail, a forked tongue, and the number '1138' stamped on his forehead!"

  • I have saved the laundry room! A guy and I walked up to the laundry room at the same time, stepped in and found thick smoke from burning/melting rubber everywhere. We both quickly stepped out. Guy hopped around, just kind of fanning the open doorway. Yeah, that'll stop whatever's the problem. I held my breath, poked my head in, spotted the smoking machine, turned it off and ran back out. *That'll* stop the problem. I wonder if that guy would have continued to fan the doorway if the machine had actually burst into flames.

"Carter, Teal'c said he saw a picture of me in your trash can. Are you trying to tell me something?"

"It was the one where you weren't wearing pants. You remember, on PXC 975? I mean, if you really wanted, I could have put that one on my new desk rather than the nice one from Cassie's graduation."

"No. No. That's fine. Really."

*squints*

I can't quite make out the other two pics besides Cassie. Someone in a tux? And then...?

[identity profile] reve-silencieux.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Cassie, Jack, then the fishing scene.

Although now that I think about it, my best friend might have said it's Daniel in the tux, then Jack and Sam fishing. *ponders*

As Joseph Mallozzi said in his blog accompanying the pictures: Today’s pics: DOP Jim Menard checks to make sure the coast is clear, setting up the next office shot, Director Andy Mikita presides, and a fuzzy picture tells a thousand words don’t it?.

Cassie, Jack, then the fishing scene.

AWWWW!

Although now that I think about it, my best friend might have said it's Daniel in the tux, then Jack and Sam fishing. *ponders*

If it's Daniel and the next is of Sam and Jack, I wanna know where the Teal'c love is!

As Joseph Mallozzi said in his blog accompanying the pictures: Today’s pics: DOP Jim Menard checks to make sure the coast is clear, setting up the next office shot, Director Andy Mikita presides, and a fuzzy picture tells a thousand words don’t it?.

See, *this* is what I'm used to with PTB: them being coy bastards. :D

The one on the far right is the dock scene in Moebius/Threads. The one in the middle ... well, I'm sure you can guess what my guess is. I do have a vague recollection of discussing this with Julie at some point, which I'd completely forgotten about until I clicked that link.

[identity profile] reve-silencieux.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Although technically not 'real', is it the wedding scene in 200?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Could be. Which means...they went and did it! :D

[identity profile] reve-silencieux.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* Sounds good to me.

IT'S TOTALLY TRUE. LALALALALA.

Okay, now that I'm actually watching it in full screen, it looks less like a trash can and more like one of those big plastic storage containers, which makes a *lot* more sense.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, hopefully it's that. Would be rather weird otherwise. And random.

*snorts at the 1138 reference!* Good ol' Lucas-homages! =D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the Monkey Island games. They have even more Lucas and Lucas Arts references. :D

Hmm. Even though I know all the puzzles, I'm getting the urge to play some of those again.

[identity profile] makesometime.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I hadn't noticed it was in what looked like a trash can... Thanks for harshing my first Stargate-related squee for ages :P

[identity profile] makesometime.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and congrats for the laundry room thing. Well done for acting like a completely sensible person, with great skill ie. A WOMAN :D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
*snickers*

I think I deserve a self-reward in the form of lunch. Hmm. What do I want?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
But maybe it's not a trash can!

[identity profile] makesometime.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm... I'd probably feel that if we didn't have that exact bin at University! :D I shall be hopeful though, there's no point in them being so cryptic that it's not immediately obvious what they're getting at!

All I can think is that living in Atlantis makes even phone sex with Jack rather difficult.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
TOTALLY. There's all that gate dialing and the fact that wormholes only stay open for a certain number of minutes...

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Man! Is it weird that the main thing I got out of this post was: "The Doctor and Rose are NOT a garbage can! *STOMPS FOOT*"

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely not! :D

[identity profile] threerings.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally understand what you mean. You get used to TPTB playing with the idea of a ship, if they acknowledge it at all, playing the are-they-or-aren't-they game to keep people interested. Who blew my mind with the way the subtext became text and continues to be...

I never expected the Doctor/Rose relationship to become as explicitly a love relationship as it did on the show when I first started watching it. Which, come to think of it, may explain some of the resentment non-shippers have towards New Who. I mean, if we are conditioned not to expect something, and then it happens, that can be jarring to certain folks.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I had expectations in the sense that I was familiar with the show and so expected certain things, but I think I kind of have a built-in expectation when it comes to sci-fi. And generally relationship-type cooties get left at the door in science fiction. Either that or it's used as a device.

And so finding a sci-fi show that *also* had an honest-to-God developing relationship storyline going on? *points to icon*

[identity profile] threerings.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, there are certain expectations with sci-fi and fluffy relationships isn't one of them.

Ned continued to be completely useless.

This is a universal truth.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The funniest part in this game was when Nancy calls up Ned, says something strange is happening and the first thing out of his mouth is something like, "OMG, is Henry okay? Did something happen to him??" After which there was a five-minute one-sided conversation with virtual Nancy about how Ned is gay. However, she just wasn't hearing me. *sigh*
ext_18985: (nostalgia)

[identity profile] aj.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
*falls over laughing* Oh, man. I could totally see that. But then, this might just be my deep and pure Frank/Nancy love coming to the forefront.

And I have to say that I believe I can read shitty fanfic because one of my favorite books when I was a kid was the Nancy Drew Case Files where she and Ned were making out on a bench for the first chapter. In a park. I mean, who DOES THAT? (It was night time.)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Never read any of those books and so I seem to recall Ned's only involvement being limited to taking Nancy to sock hops or something. :D

But Frank/Nancy! YES! These games themselves have turned me into a Frank/Nancy person.
ext_18985: (oh honey)

[identity profile] aj.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
They're just so competent and KICKASS and totally want to go solve all the crime in the world. Also, there is minor canon in the books with Frank/Nancy. In the side book Nancy Drew/Hardyboys crossover books, there are like four or five books of building tension where Nancy and Frank are all kinda.. "Hmm. You're cute." and it ALL COMES TO A HEAD when this cottage that Nancy and Frank are in gets hit by an avalanche and they're stuck getting colder and colder and start making out and then Ned shows up on a ski mobile and RUINS EVERYTHING by existing.

And then Nancy and Frank are all guilty and end up going to FBI camp.

Do the games ship Nancy/Frank too? I think Ned and Joe should hook up and be useless TOGETHER. It's perfect!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
BAH! Figures that Ned would burst in at the wrong time.

And the games don't actually ship Frank and Nancy, however the Hardy Boys are in a few of them, and they're actually like useful and stuff. Well, Frank is. You're right - Ned and Joe could hook up and just kind of dumb around together.

Joe/Ned = the newest slash pairing of dumb pretty boys!

I can get behind that.

And dude, can I borrow some of your games? I wanna plaaaaaaay.

Sure! I'll send you the ones with the Hardy Boys in them for sure. *wonders if I have your latest address*

[identity profile] tsukara.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, well, Hardy Boys > Ned. Trufax.

This is akin to me and CSI for a lot of years. I was always a GSR shipper, and for many years, there was a sort of arethey/aren't they will they/won't they thing about it. TPTB were similarly cryptic. But there is hope. Not only has my ship become completely canon, they even used the term 'GSR shipper' in their promo for next episode. The squee, it is good. So there is yet hope. There is always hope (especially when it comes to SG)!

Yeah, you rock! WTF was that other guy doing? Seriously... Way to go on your part though! *mini-party*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-13 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, they actually used the term? That's pretty amazing. :D But UST is totally the standard these days. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. But when DW actually crossed over into this whole "look, we're in a relationship!" thing, it was like a breath of fresh air from the monotony of TV.

*brings booze to the mini-party*

[identity profile] tsukara.livejournal.com 2007-10-14 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
They did! I was astounded! You probably could have heard my shocked squee of amazement three floors down! Maybe DW is making a new trend of the whole relationship-thing. It'd be nice to see on some of these shows.

But I think the key is that DW and CSI are two long-running shows who are very sure of their viewing base. They don't have to fight for viewers, or wait to see if they've been renewed for the next year (ala Stargate). So they can take more risks deviating from the standard T.V. formula of UST and get out of trouble if it doesn't go over well. ...Or maybe I've just thought about this way too much.

Mini-booze. And lots of it. *brings mini-cupcakes with mini-chocalate chips*
