(no subject)

Had to take some pictures for work just now, and so uploaded a couple of pictures from Monday as well. They're a bit crappy, since all I have is MS Paint to re-size them.

Monday Morning
[livejournal.com profile] poohmusings: *turns on TV* Um...
Me: Oh huh. I think we need to get out of here.
Karen: Yes.
Me: Right. The freeways are closed right here, but I know a Back Way!
Karen: But...we're headed into brown sky! It's blue sky over there!
Me: This is quicker!
Karen: BUT, BLUE SKY!

Police: YOU SHALL NOT PASS.
Me: BAH!
Karen: \o/ Blue sky!

And actually, *right* to the left of this shot is where some houses ended up burning on Tuesday night. (Yeah, it was that close, Karen.) In my defense, it wasn't like the fire was there *then* when we were running like hell. But today there are National Guard troops standing there with guns and all. It's still closed to everyone, and they don't want anyone looting.

This was over on the coast, making our way down to San Diego. The fires were still about 20-30 miles east of the coast, but by this time this section had gotten this dark. Down in downtown San Diego, the air was relatively clear. Relatively. You could still smell smoke and ash was already falling, but at least you could breathe the air.

Which reminds me, Karen and I saw Elizabeth on Monday. So Sir What's-His-Name single-handedly took down the entire Spanish fleet? HOT DAMN! But at least QEI was able to get some LotR hair action going in the five minutes it took to take down Spain. This is important and I really think that more British Royals should walk around with armor and LotR hair. That would be awesome.

Holy shit that is spooky. Glad you're okay!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. :)

I'm going to be SO glad when this is all over. I feel like I could curl up in the sock drawer and sleep for days.

WHAT KIND OF A SHITHOLE PLANET IS THIS?!?

[identity profile] ginamak.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, MST reference! \o/

Whoa, look at that! "Breech hull - all die." Even had it underlined!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
They are the BEST references!!

Very interesting times you've been through recently. Very glad to know you're okay, as some friends of one of the guys I work with live further east and they lost their house.

I remember back when Sydney was surrounded by fires in late 1994. The highways north, south, and west of the city had been cut by fire, and although where I lived was never in any danger, no matter where you went for days all you could smell was smoke.

And yes, Sir Francis Drake was one of the man English leaders in the fight against the Spanish Armada, though to be honest the actual effect of the fight against the Armada has been somewhat exaggerated in English writings.

:( Someone at work here has friends who lost theirs as well.

It gets to you after a while.

So perhaps real life didn't have as much overt symbolism in it as well? ;)

[identity profile] chiroho.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)

Yes, I'm sure that there wasn't very much Tolkien symbolism in Cate QEI standing on hillsides with streaming hair when the event actually happened. ;-)

BTW, was the movie as good as the original?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I've actually seen the original all the way through. It's one of those where I caught about 30 minutes in a hotel room once. :D

[identity profile] chiroho.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
And I think I'd be lying if I said I remembered the original anyway, so that's probably a poor thing to ask.

Is it worth seeing?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was entertaining. It was a bit melodramatic and the music was utterly bombastic, but entertaining. Probably a rental, though.

Me: Oh huh. I think we need to get out of here.

See? Television IS good for you!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It is!!

It was funny since when we went to bed it was like, "oh, there's a fire way off, miles and miles to the east" and in the morning, "AHH!"

And Karen wasn't even interested in the news. She was just bored. And then we opened the blinds. :D

[identity profile] poohmusings.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
This is true! I only turned on the TV because I was curious what shows are on around 8 am on weekdays! But thank god for my curiousness, huh?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
No kidding!!

[identity profile] audrich.livejournal.com 2007-10-25 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG, I'm so glad you posted.
I distinctly remember the last time this happened and you had to 'get the hell outta dodge'. I truly hope you all stay very safe, M.

Yeah, it happened 4 years ago as well, although not as close last time. We do get wildfires around here, but normally not anywhere near this level.

And looks like it's all starting to get under control, thank goodness.

I was watching the news this afternoon and thinking of you when they showed the fire Dante's Inferno! Glad your safe and sound! :) *hug*

I really think that more British Royals should walk around with armor and LotR hair. That would be awesome.

Well they *would* but HRH QEII has a note from her minion subject doctor that excuses her and Charlie boy is thinning a bit on top. He could probably manage a good comb over waving in the wind if he really wanted to try!

See, I think he could *totally* pull this off:

I will start a national campaign to raise funds for hair extensions for him! I'm sure they've got some shiny armour hanging about somewhere that'll be his size!

*starts writing the manifesto to lobby Parliament for ceremonial dress code alterations*

Only you can turn your life into a picspam. This is why you are awesome.

Was fun, I'm telling you!

Pictures of scariness!!!

Though not as scary as the orange and flaming picture on the front of the newspaper this morning. It said, and I kid you not: "FIRES CHARRING CALIFORNIA: PARADISE BLACKENED INTO MOONSCAPE."

It was so mean! (I hadn't even had my coffee yet when I picked it up!) I pretty much went: "Michelle!!! ... *SOB*"

I am glad you're okay. *SQUISHES*

BLEH. Although, yeah. It's going to be bad after all this is over. Growing up in So Cal I've seen wildfires (and the aftermath) all my life. But they were saying these will have covered the most ground ever in San Diego - no matter if it's populated or unpopulated. The vegetation should kick back by next year (obviously the homes won't), although there'll be bad mudslides this winter.

I am glad you're okay. *SQUISHES*

:-*

ACK! *hugs you*

I'm glad you are OK.

Those photos look rather scary.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. :)

And it's funny, but looking at those pictures now, and they look rather tame in relation to what was happening. It was hard to capture the smoke in the shots - it just looks like sorta dark grey skies or something.

[identity profile] spacefiend.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Ack! Not cool! Glad you're still okay!

Eek! Man, you should've seen me following the news (on TV and in the newspaper) on Tuesday-Thursay. I would pour over all the maps trying to figure out where your apartment is and how close the fires were to it. I'm soooooooooooo glad you and your stuff's okay! *hugs hugs hugs*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-10-26 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
And now you will forever know the entire geography of San Diego county. :D

*smooooch*
