Uh...

Kinda (Five, Nyssa, Tegan, Adric)
  • Nyssa's sick and the Doctor's rigging up a Delta Wave? Uh, isn't that what he used on the Daleks in TpotW? o_O

  • A guest character who I swear sounds like Mary Poppins. People are going to start singing soon.

  • Heh. The Doctor is so geeky. He sits there and pokes at these windchimes, completely fascinated. *pinches his cheeks* And meanwhile, Tegan goes on an acid trip...

  • You know, watching the Doctor trying to deal with an insane person is actually pretty amusing.

Doctor: This is my "you're barkfuckingmad" face.

  • Right. Am about half-way through the episode, and Kinda kinda lost me. Not in a "this is over my head" way but in an "you're all on drugs, AREN'T YOU?!" way. The more classic Who I watch, the less cracked-out new Who becomes.

  • Yup. Still no idea what's going on. I'm sure that "the beginning," "the end," a snake and one of those 70s clocks ties together somehow, but they're not giving it up.

  • Doctor: What is the one thing evil cannot face? Itself.
Me: Doctor, nooooooo! Now they've got you spouting nonsense as well! WAH.

  • Well, that was... Yeah.

Sounds like the Doctor's expression in that picture could apply to the whole episode?

Pretty much. There was this bad guy/entity that came out of nowhere and disappeared into nowhere, and meanwhile there were these "natives" that wore double helix necklaces (so you *knew* they weren't savages or something, although that's never explained), they're telepathic where the men don't speak but the women do, and some sort of freak-out box, and other people go nuts and start making paper dolls, and...

They lost me.

"Kinda" is good, but "Snakedance" is better. I mostly like them because we get to see Janet Fielding get her evil on. :D

I can totally imagine her having a good time being all evil in these eps. Mwah. :D

"Snakedance" is also just more accessible. [livejournal.com profile] brainiacfive wrote a religion term paper on both of them in high school. The whole thing with the Mara comes out of Indian mythology, and the way they used it in "Kinda" is really quite cool if, y'know, you've read scads and scads of Joseph Campbell and/or studied Jung. If not, it's pretty much a great big WTF. "Snakedance" does a better job of simplifying and clarifying what the hell is going on.

And I'm in the "if not" category. :D There were more than a few times they jumped from point A to point F without stopping in this one. And I don't remember Snakedance being like that. Actually, I found The Five Doctors less cracked-out than this one. :D

The other option, of course, is being a big ol' geeky thirteen-year-old who jams on weirdness going on inside people's heads as a matter of course. Which is why it worked for me. ;-)

"Kinda" is a funny little episode. I think once I decided to just laugh at the giant plastic snake it became a lot more fun. It makes absolutely no sense and of all the plot threads to pick up later it had to be Tegan gets possessed by a big snake.

Because giant plastic snakes are just good fun.

You really gotta love the giant plastic snake. That probably was the best part. :D

I think the giant plastic is always the best part. :-)

This is true. :D

Kinda is the only 5th Doctor story I've actually seen. I thought it was pretty good, mainly because of mad!Hindle and his little cardboard city :)

"You can't mend PEOPLE!!"

Unfortunately, not even that could save it for me. I'm used to plot holes being the trademark of DW, but this ep seemed constructed from plot holes. Yeeep.
