I usually do that first line of each post for the year meme, and so here it is. 2007 edition.

January: Since it's 2007, can we stop with the 80s-Up-With-People-style music in parades?
Amen, past!me. I can be very Pollyanna about things, but when singing's involved...

February: Pic of the day.
It was a pic of that ATHF cartoon board giving the finger, which caused a bit of commotion in Boston. Heh.

March: Work continues to be busy, so that I haven't been able to do much more than quickly skim the flist.
    *YAWNS*

April: Why I liked Martha: She made me laugh and would be someone I'd like in real life.
I've always said that I have more in common with Martha than Rose. Really.

May: I. NEED. SUGAR.
    *backs away slowly*

June: Random thought of the day: Romeo and Juliet are morons.
    Yes, they are.

July: I think Martha wins.
And I still think she came out ahead of the vast majority of companions when it came to departures.

August: This morning I realized that not everyone who's Doctor/Rose-inclined is on my "squee" filter.
That's genius right there considering there are thousands that dig the ship. :P

September: So I'm on this online TV survey panel thing, and this was a "description of the new TV show that is scheduled to air on SCI FI."
It was for Tin Man. Even though it came off better in the promos than it did on this summary, I still didn't feel a strong desire to watch. Probably because the whole Wizard of Oz thing has been done to death and then some, and I was never all that crazy about the story in the first place.

October: I spent a lot of the weekend sleeping, trying to shake a bit of a cold.
    *yawns again*

November: November!
    Wow, that's...smart.

December: Just stumbled out of bed and saw [livejournal.com profile] shinyopals's post with this link: Buy Uranium Ore on Amazon
    Heh. *amused*

I've always said that I have more in common with Martha than Rose. Really.

Me too, which is odd, considering how completely opposite my opinions of them are to watch.

You'd think that she'd be a shoe-in for me being able to identify with her, but it just didn't happen. I blame the writing.

Me three. I

I was trying to rationalise this to myself the other day. Didn't get very far but I suspect that Rose reminds me a lttle of my younger self, before all that need for self definition through independence or a career came into play. Perhaps I yearn for a more exciting time in life so I attach myself to Rose more than Martha?

Meh. Who knows? Rose>Martha in my world. That about sums it up.

See, I was never much like Rose even when younger. But then I don't buy into the whole thing about needing to have a character be a replacement for yourself in order to be able to relate to or understand them.

Me neither. Which is why I gave up trying to find some whako meta reason as to why I preferred Rose. I just do. Better written character with a better performance, imo. Probably sums it up. Plus the UST and chemistry with the doctor thing. Must not forget that.

I think that's what it boils down to for me as well.

I've always found this to be mostly true, in that if there's two female characters vying for the attention of main male character, I ship the one I feel I most relate to (younger woman Sara on CSI, yet older woman Cuddy on House etc.) and I can either be with the grain or against the grain of popular opinion with this! Why it doesn't apply to Martha is beyond me, but as you say below, it's probably just bad bad writing.

Me four.

I think maybe I don't like Martha a lot because she's too much like me - kinda like how if someone you meet in real life is too much like you you just end up picking on each other all the time.

That's not saying that I hate Martha or anything, far from it. I just like Rose more.

Or like when the Doctor meets himself... :D
