Merry Christmas!! I'm back and have tons of LJ to catch up on, which will hopefully start happening tomorrow. Thanks for the LJ pressie, [livejournal.com profile] ivydoor!

I managed to watch the new DW episode. Big surprise, eh? And I didn't spoil myself first! \o/

Voyage of the Damned

  • That little TARDIS repair at the beginning? Very cool!!

  • OMGWTFNEWTHEMESONG! New new? Or just for Christmas? It sounds very Christmas-y in that it sounds quite Mannheim Steamroller. I kinda like it and wouldn't mind if it sticks around.

  • Okay, FUN beginning!! Loads of little things like Astrid being all bouncy to be on Earth or the Doctor having fun spraying the snooty rich guys with champagne, but probably the biggest thing is happy!Doctor! Or at least not ready!to!kill!himself!Doctor! \o/ Loved seeing him having fun at the party.

  • "I'm the Doctor. I'm a Time Lord. I'm from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborus. I am 903 years old. I am the man who is going to save your lives and all 6 billion people on the planet below. You got a problem with that?" Okay, I'm a sap. I loved that whole line! Guess the whole glowing and floating stuff in LotTL did help him rediscover his mojo after all! Glowing and floating tends to do that.

  • "A few years ago I was homeless, and there was the Earth." Awwww.

  • :( Didn't expect that one guy to suddenly die. And then the Doctor has to deal with the fact that he promised to get them out alive. And then the other woman dies... Huh.

  • Awww. Astrid wants to go with the Doctor and take care of him and he likes that idea. Okay, so bets on if Astrid dies at the end? Anyone? It's like she ran over to a corner to quick put on a red shirt.

  • However, good Lord. Can we just have the inevitable Doctor and Donna kiss in the first episode to get it out of the way? Is it like some sort of contract thing where Ten snogs/is snogged by everyone? And if so, why the hell didn't Jack get a go?

  • Noooooooooo! We had semi-healthy Doctor back! And then Astrid sacrifices herself to save the world and we're back to square one, aren't we?!

  • The Doctor ascends by angels. *giggles*

  • Alonzo! HEE!!

  • Bwahahahahaha! The Titanic almost crashed into Buckingham Palace. I was laughing during that whole sequence. Good kind of laughing – what cheesy fun!

  • Okay, am I the only one in finding what happened to Astrid really creepy? She's like...echo-y atoms spread through space? This is better than death? Just to be scattered and alone forever?

  • Oh, come on, Doctor! Just because Mr. Copper isn't a looker he can't come? Pthththt! (Okay, yeah yeah. I know the real reason is that the Doctor just tried to start over with Astrid and fate bit him on the ass. *pats the traumatized Doctor*)

  • All in all, MUCH better than The Runaway Bride – thumbs up from me. Very rewatchable. (Although The Christmas Invasion is still the best Christmas ep in my opinion.)

  • *watches S4 previews* BWAH! Right. Did I call the Doctor and Donna kiss or WHAT? You know, I think the Doctor should just start kissing random objects! Yes! I demand that Ten snog a toaster! That's right, a toaster! It'd be awesome. You know it'd be awesome.

[identity profile] ramdonomo.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. You liked this FAR more than I thought you would have. :D I'm glad you did.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
I may have been drinking some Christmas cheer while watching! WOO!

[identity profile] ramdonomo.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
I clearly had not been drinking the right stuff. Next Christmas I'm at your place.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Jingle those bells!

[identity profile] javabreeze.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I think the Doctor should just start kissing random objects!

Well, he already takes it one step further and licks random things. ;)

I want a proper snog between Rose and the Doc. If Astrid gets a goodbye kiss, then there's no reason why Rose can't get a hello kiss.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 06:34 am (UTC)(link)

This is true. :D

You know, this episode made me want to see that way more than before. I don't think I was really ever looking for it during S2, to be honest. But now that the apparent theme of Ten is to kiss everyone of the female persuasion (poor Jack), and he never kissed Rose? There was the Cassandra!Rose snog, but that doesn't really cut it in my mind. Not anymore.

[identity profile] ninamazing.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 08:23 am (UTC)(link)

AGREED. And David Tennant's a good kisser! LET'S HAVE IT. :D

Ah, but remember, that one would actually mean something, not "genetic transfer" or "she kissed him" or "tradition kiss" or whatever the hell prompts him to kiss Donna who was NOT supposed to be any sort of romantic interest. Kissing Rose would be something he wants to do, has wanted to do, intends to do again, does because he loves her. It would matter, it would count for something, and the show...as much as I love the PTB on this show most of the time and I think they firmly support the ship, they're still DW fanboys and have to contend with their own and fandom's unwillingness to change the structure of the show that would come with meaningful kissing of Rose.

[identity profile] ninamazing.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
It's like she ran over to a corner to quick put on a red shirt.

HAHAHAHAHA. Exactly what my sister said. :D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It was like, "Oh, Astrid. You were pretty cool, but you just signed your own death warrant."

[identity profile] rjrog77.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 10:11 am (UTC)(link)

We had semi-healthy Doctor back!

Y'know, I'm not so sure we did. 'Tis my opinion, after watching VotD that all we had is the same broken man who's just got a little bit better at hiding everything behind the brittle cheerfulness.

No further forward in that regard than we were at the end of Season Three, so far as I could tell.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It might have been all tucked away. He's *fabulous* at hiding everything. But it seemed like he was at least having fun at the party and talking about loving travel. I think that was the big thing for me - saying he loved traveling around (don't remember the exact words), which I don't think I've heard in a good long while.

I hope you're right.

Much as my muse loves angst-filled Ten, I would love to see him come out the other side of this in one piece at some point.

[identity profile] sunnytyler001.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
I so wanted Mr Copper to be the new companion... Or Alonzo!

[identity profile] sensiblecat.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
Word to Mr Copper. He's so non-snoggable. A bit like travelling with Willy Loman, and I'm sure his experience as a travelling salesman would fit him perfectly to life on the TARDIS. And how far does the Doctor think a million quid will go in London, anyway? A pied de terre in Westminster and a season ticket, and he'd be looking for gainful employment again.

How come it was broad daylight when they flew over Buck House? And dark the rest of the time?

High body count for an Xmas special, wasn't it?

Oh, and I loved the Brasso in the storeroom where the TARDIS materialised. So RTD.

Never mind a snog with Rose. I want real snow next year, please.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Mr. Copper would have been fun! Alonzo was cute, but I'd much rather see Mr. Copper.

[identity profile] sunnytyler001.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol! It was fun to hear his theories about human people!!! I really hope he'll come back!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It really was great to see a reversal where Earth was this alien world.

[identity profile] deltachild.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
Is it just me or were there a fair few references back to Rose in this, not just little subtle ones but big ones to hit the audience over the head with? There was bounciness, making the Dr less DOOMFUL and then Astrid is a sort of almost hologram type thing except this time he can touch her.

I loved the line about the Dr would be a monster if he could decided who lived and died, cause that seemed to be one of the reasons Donna was ever so slightly afraid of him.

Ten does seem a bit obsessed with snogging everything in sight, BRING BACK JACK!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)

I couldn't help but notice the similarity to the way Astrid "died" and Rose being pulled to the Void. Both end up alive after certain death (well, sorta with Astrid - still creeped out by that) but apart from the Doctor.

I loved the line about the Dr would be a monster if he could decided who lived and died, cause that seemed to be one of the reasons Donna was ever so slightly afraid of him.

I really liked that line as well. Mr. Copper would have made for a good companion.

Ten does seem a bit obsessed with snogging everything in sight, BRING BACK JACK!

If they're not careful, they're going to wind up in Shatner-land. It's starting to get eye-rolling.

[identity profile] deltachild.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, I'm having a flashback here. I can't remember who it was, but wasn't somebody holding onto something near the start, with the threat of being sucked into a big load of badness as well? That bit made me think they were being mean to the Dr even then.

Ten could just be a bit of a randy bugger I guess and they do all seem to jump on him a little bit, but he sort of puts out his feeling quite quickly sometimes.

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
I loved the reference to Douglas Adams. A tip of the hat to his classic story...

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Too bad there wasn't an annoying parrot on board!

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I was half expecting a parrot somewhere along the lines.

[identity profile] velvet4269.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Now that it's been aired, I can post the link to this ... which I found rather funny. They're protesting over the messianic imagery in the Christmas Special, but not the last ep. of season 3? I guess that was just too much Tinkerbell.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, just for using angels?

The angel ascension thing cracked me up when watching. Could have been the wine...

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, am I the only one in finding what happened to Astrid really creepy? She's like...echo-y atoms spread through space? This is better than death? Just to be scattered and alone forever?

Buha! It is *totally* creepy. I wouldn't be able to watch Doctor Who if I was scattered in atoms across space!

All in all, MUCH better than The Runaway Bride – thumbs up from me. Very rewatchable. (Although The Christmas Invasion is still the best Christmas ep in my opinion.)

Yes, and yes. TCI seemed less... silly. Maybe it's the crack air down in Cardiff?

You know, I think the Doctor should just start kissing random objects! Yes! I demand that Ten snog a toaster! That's right, a toaster!

Muha! Knowing the Doctor's luck, he'd snog the toaster and then it'd fall into the bathtub with him and then electrocute him to death. THAT WOULD BE SAD.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)

Going through those S1 episodes again, a lot of stuff in the beginning seemed different than now. There were really huge things going on in the beginning, but it all seemed less bombastic than nowadays.

Muha! Knowing the Doctor's luck, he'd snog the toaster and then it'd fall into the bathtub with him and then electrocute him to death. THAT WOULD BE SAD.

Or the toaster would heroically sacrifice itself by throwing itself in the tub, thus leaving the Doctor ALONE. Woe.

"I'm the Doctor. I'm a Time Lord. I'm from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborus. I am 903 years old. I am the man who is going to save your lives and all 6 billion people on the planet below. You got a problem with that?"

This was much better in context than at the end of the one trailer, for me. I thought it sounded weird in the trailer, but here it was perfect.

"A few years ago I was homeless, and there was the Earth." Awwww.

Is that what he said? I couldn't quite understand him, and given how late I was watching it decided not to go back and try to hear it properly. Awwwwwwww. I love that he perceives Earth as sort of taking him in.

It's like she ran over to a corner to quick put on a red shirt.

Yeah, I went *facepalm* right there. Kiss Of Death, seriously. And she would've been good, too! She was so excited about seeing new places and new people! *sniff*

And if so, why the hell didn't Jack get a go?

This is exactly what I want to know. If everybody else gets a shot, why not Jack? *pouts*

Noooooooooo! We had semi-healthy Doctor back! And then Astrid sacrifices herself to save the world and we're back to square one, aren't we?!

I swear, I was sitting there at various points during the show and grumbling at RTD about how mean they are and why can't they let up on the poor Doctor.

Did I call the Doctor and Donna kiss or WHAT? You know, I think the Doctor should just start kissing random objects! Yes! I demand that Ten snog a toaster! That's right, a toaster! It'd be awesome. You know it'd be awesome.

You know, I'm kind of peeved. WTH does he need to kiss everyone anyway? And why can't he kiss Rose in a fun and non-possessed way? *grumble*

All in all, though, I really enjoyed this episode. As you said, it was much better than The Runaway Bride, although I still enjoy that one. It's just that TRB is a bit more... cracked, or something. Heh.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-26 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)

*nods* And I'm sure it all ties to Rose and Jackie taking him in. "There was this family..."

Yeah, I went *facepalm* right there. Kiss Of Death, seriously. And she would've been good, too! She was so excited about seeing new places and new people! *sniff*

She was sweet.

This is exactly what I want to know. If everybody else gets a shot, why not Jack? *pouts*

Jack's just gonna have to kiss him next time around.

I swear, I was sitting there at various points during the show and grumbling at RTD about how mean they are and why can't they let up on the poor Doctor.

You'd think he'd get a break, it being Christmas and all. But nope. Another sledgehammer to the hearts. Figures.

You know, I'm kind of peeved. WTH does he need to kiss everyone anyway? And why can't he kiss Rose in a fun and non-possessed way? *grumble*

This is what I'd like to know! In the contract, obviously.

All in all, though, I really enjoyed this episode. As you said, it was much better than The Runaway Bride, although I still enjoy that one. It's just that TRB is a bit more... cracked, or something. Heh.

TRB seemed much more campy. And then you had Donna...

I will give Donna another chance. I will give Donna another chance. I will give Donna another chance. I will give Donna another chance. I will give Donna another chance.

[identity profile] okelay.livejournal.com 2007-12-27 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
i agree with every single point.
i liked it much better than TRB

and while the Doctor shouldn't be snogging everyone, to be honest, if i were to act/direct/write/ in any way work with him i'd demand a snog in my contract, too.

he's David Tennant. who can resist?

i hated that they killed her. she was fantastic! and she made him happy!! couldn't they at least let her live? it's so unfair, evil RTD!

I thought it was cute they let her as "stardust" but probably just cause i love the book.
and it kinda reminded me of the end of HDM.

you know what's really unfair? The Doctor's snogged every single companion since Rose, but he never properly snogged her!!

i want a proper, hot, long, real kiss!!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2007-12-27 01:08 am (UTC)(link)

MWAH.

Well, you see, the Doctor's not allowed to be happy. You didn't know this? ;)

you know what's really unfair? The Doctor's snogged every single companion since Rose, but he never properly snogged her!!

I know!

Finally saw this last night. All I can say is: haven't we had enough of the creepy angels already? Eesh.

Personally, I think we'll see Astrid again, in some form or another. They left the door wide open for that one. And Mr. Copper.

Apparently not. :D

Could be. I really wouldn't mind seeing either of them again.

I love that he has a direct line to the Queen.

## All in all, MUCH better than The Runaway Bride – thumbs up from me. Very rewatchable.

I wasn't sure about it in the beginning but by the end of it I loved it. Very enjoyable.

Maybe not square one, he did only know Astrid for a day or two.

I said this somewhere else, but I'm getting tired of whenever the Doctor *tries* to get a little more back in his life, he gets sledgehammered. Done with that now.

[identity profile] cheapevilgirl.livejournal.com 2008-01-03 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
After four years of Who I'm starting to get the picture that RTD is an angst whore. Which is fine cause I am too. But once and a while a little happiness would be nice.
