So Jack appears in Torchwood after "The Last of the Time Lords," ready for action. The shooty kind too. But for some reason he's being evasive about where he was, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but whatever.

I'd imagine that in the year he spent with the Master and the Doctor, on the non-torture days there were games of Scrabble, long discussions about Rose, and hitting on the Doctor. (What? You think that old!Doctor would actually dissuade Jack? HA! He'd so hit that. Jack would briefly consider hitting on the Master, but ultimately he'd take a pass.) Under Doctor Who Fandom Rule Number One, I declare this to be canon.

Oh, and under Doctor Who Fandom Rule Number Three, I'm declaring Jack's unfortunate future plastic surgery job to be of questionable canon.

ANYWAY, the thing at the end with "Grey" - so does Jack have a child? Or maybe a sibling? Of course he immediately shuts down about it.

You know Jack, you really shouldn't be following the Doctor's lead on this. Yeah, it's good that you're trying to connect with the people who you've suddenly declared to be your purpose in life, but if you actually shut them out of your life and who you are, that connection ain't gonna happen. Not that I think the Doctor was shutting Rose out, but he definitely shut Martha and Mr. Copper out. He's desperately lonely and part of that is of his own making. Wise up, Jack!

Oh, and under Doctor Who Fandom Rule Number Three, I'm declaring Jack's unfortunate future plastic surgery job to be of questionable canon.

I personally think that Jack knows more about The Doctor than The Doctor thinks, being clever and sneaky and, you know, ex-Time Agent. And thus in my personal canon, Jack's little story about his nickname was a deliberate mindf**k aimed at The Doctor as small payback for all the shit The Doctor has put Jack through.

Oooh, Jack is EVIL. And doubly evil for not cluing the Doctor in about the Master in the first place.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I like to think that at least part of it is still him protecting the Doctor's secrets. However, I do think that he could find a way to do that while telling them the majority of what they should know.

(What? You think that old!Doctor would actually dissuade Jack? HA! He'd so hit that. Jack would briefly consider hitting on the Master, but ultimately he'd take a pass.)

*snort* Too true. He'd probably decide the Master was just too crazy for him, Captain John aside. (Where's the DW fandom rulebook, again?)

Oh, and under Doctor Who Fandom Rule Number Three, I'm declaring Jack's unfortunate future plastic surgery job to be of questionable canon.

Yeah. Pfft. Even Rusty was unsure about that one. Like [livejournal.com profile] professor and others have said, Jack was just being evil and having them on.

Does the Doctor's existence need to be kept a secret really? I mean, VotD kinda blew that one apart. :D

Oh, I think I read that wrong above. So the theory is Jack was just messing with him?

Did it? How? I mean, yes, the Queen's aware of him, but according to VotD, it seems like she's known about him for awhile.

So the theory is Jack was just messing with him?

Yup.

Okay, maybe people aren't familiar with the Doctor, but for three Christmases in a row there's been weird alien stuff, and someone's saved the world every time.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
True, but no one's seen him doing the saving. I don't know. I just get the feeling (and maybe this is very wrong) that the Doctor is just as happy not to have his name bandied about all over the place.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're probably right.

[identity profile] cookie2697.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll argue that one. Each of those "saving the world" instances have appeared to the outside observer to be someone else.

In Christmas Invasion, Torchwood blew up the alien spaceship. And yes, it appeared to be leaving at that point, but they don't know that anything happened there. They also don't know Torchwood exists. But they saw the big laser thingie and likely went, "oh, yay, the government saved us." And they wouldn't argue that because they wanted to keep Torchwood "top secret" or whatever.

In Runaway Bride...same deal, only it was Saxon who blew up the Racnoss. The people didn't know anything was going on underground. All they saw was the ship blowing things up and killing people. And if you notice...I think it's in Sound of the Drums, Saxon not only takes responsibility for saving them from the Racnoss, but also blames the draining of the Thames on the Racnoss.

As for VOTD...the Queen knows it's the Doctor...but weren't the majority of the people hiding indoors anyway, or abandoning London, or whatever. The Titanic didn't actually HURT anything, so people likely aren't TOO aware that any saving of the world happened there ;)

Now, all that being said...I actually agree with you on this one. Jack is being dumb. And he's probably trying to protect the Doctor, yeah. But there's other issues in this episode besides where he's been. There's the fact that this John dude comes in and is alluding to all of these things about Jack's past, and the rest of the team is being very clear with Jack that they're not sure if they trust him right now...but Jack is giving nothing away.

Of course, if Jack did reveal it all, they'd lose the "Jack is a Mystery Man" aspect of Torchwood, and then what'd keep people coming back? lol. Of course, as it's been said, Whofans don't find Jack TOO mysterious. But there are certainly background questions out there about him.

ANYWAY, the thing at the end with "Grey" - so does Jack have a child? Or maybe a sibling? Of course he immediately shuts down about it.

My immediate reaction is that Grey is another Time Agent that Jack royally screwed over.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
For some reason it looked like a child's hand in that flash. But I could have been looking at it wrong.

[identity profile] javabreeze.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, I watched it again. It does look like a child's hand. But I think maybe Grey was a mentor or something and maybe the child was Jack? *shrugs*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Something from his childhood would be interesting.

[identity profile] leighleighla.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Spoilerish reports say it's possibly a brother.

Other spoilery reports say that at the end of the season, he buries Jack alive.

This, morbidly, makes me happy.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Long lost sibling... ACK! Torchwood fandom's going to be invaded with brotherslash, isn't it?

THAT FIC NOW GIVE TO ME.

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
UNLESS YOU ALLOW ME TO STEAL IT?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
GO FOR IT.

I'm currently in a fic lul. There's a Nine/Rose fic out there that's mocking me.

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
YEAH. IT WILL BE ON MUCH CRACK.

Was it a fic where Rose longs to have Nine back and hates Ten?

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
UNLESS I READ IT WRONG AND YOU SAID YOU COULDN'T WRITE NINE/ROSE FOR SOME REASON?

HAHA I THINK I DID.

I immediately assumed that Grey was his father. I haven't seen this thought ANYWHERE else. So either I''m totally amazing, or I'm really really not.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be very interesting, and I'd be amazed! :D

[identity profile] makesometime.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, I'm not sure whether I think the Daddy issues route would be too cliché for Rusty, or simply not clichéd enough and he must do it better, stronger, gayer. Who knows...
