It sometimes takes me a while...

Ianto: [on phone] Yes, I'd like a Pepperoni Feast and some coleslaw.

Me: Uh... Oh! Betcha a "Pepperoni Feast" is something like "Toad in a Hole in a Log Next to a Mushroom." The British are adorable.

[later on the show]

Pizza Girl: [arrives]

Me: [thinks nothing of it]

[a day later as David Johnson is babbling about the stock market and the banking scandal in France...]

Me: WAIT. PIZZA AND COLESLAW???

So. Is this a British thing? Or is Ianto off his nut?

Off his nut.

I adore coleslaw, but not with pizza omg!

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
haha. I never noticed that!

My vote goes to it being a British thing. When I spent a few weeks over in Britain a couple of summers ago, I noticed that they serve coleslaw as a side to dishes WAY more than we do in the states.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, GOOD. Because EW!!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I never knew! I always think of it as this big Southern thing, and something they throw at you at KFC, but beyond that...

[identity profile] katesutton.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
You know what is disgusting? I know you want to know. Coleslaw on barbecue sandwiches. Whyyy? It's SOGGY.

[identity profile] aj.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
But not actually disgusting outside of the soggy.

WHAT?

[identity profile] sethoz.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
While I don't eat it EVER, Coleslaw is often served with Pizza over here yeah.

It's not the only dubious side-dish that we Brit's apparently like with our pizza, some of it is mind boggling.

[identity profile] katesutton.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
BLEAH. I have a thing about soggy bread. Just..no. On the other hand, I do like coleslaw. Especially the red vinegar kind.

These people put corn on their pizza. And tuna. Coleslaw as a side item sounds almost normal after that.

(I mean, as normal as cabbage, vinegar, sugar, and mayonaise slopped together can. UGH.)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda like that. :D I'm not always in the mood for it, but sometimes.

I think I'm afraid to ask.

EEP! Although...I do admit I like shrimp pesto pizza. Or there's this one with prosciutto and artichoke hearts that I love. MMMMMM.

[identity profile] solielle.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! I didn't even think about that! But then, after Japan, nothing pizza related surprises me. (And I will never use "pointing to the menu" as an effective communication tool again!)

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Sugared popcorn, ketchup that is either a thick red sugar solution or dyed vinegar, candies that primarily feature almonds not having, well, almonds, the aforementioned corn (maize) on pizza, french fry sandwiches, meatballs wrapped in intestines, eels stewed in their own ick and left to sit there, puddings and sausages featuring blood as the main ingredient... and coleslaw with pizza is strange to you?

Which is not to say I don't enjoy some of the above (I like kettle corn, which is pretty sugary, and chip butties sound intriguing if horrid for you), but still.

Of course, we eat some weird crap in this country (mmm, mmm, pickled pigs' feet... would you like that spicy or mild?), so I'd be interested to hear what horrifies a Brit.

As to the matter of coleslaw on barbecue, when it's in the correct combination of type of coleslaw, type of 'cue and quality of roll, it's a really good combination. Serving large-chunk, wet, mayonnaise-based sweet coleslaw on St. Louis-style barbecue with a hamburger bun is a disaster waiting to happen.

Urk. About as adventurous as I get with pizza is bacon. Mmm, bacon.

(Seafood and cheese just don't sit well together with me. Apart, they're lovely. Together...ick. Tuna melts, for example, are an abomination unto food. My one exception to my no sea creatures + dairy rule is crab alfredo. Yum. That's good.)

[identity profile] ginamak.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, now, we do french fry po-boys in New Orleans, so that's not too weird.

Then again, I've never actually seen anyone eat one.

[identity profile] goldy-dollar.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
BUHA!

I feel like I've learned so much about Britain today.

[identity profile] frenchroast.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
Just wanted to say as a Southerner, coleslaw is...blech.

Of course, that's probably b/c I don't like mayonaise.

I can see brits putting coleslaw with pizza. They have beets and corn and other weird things in their salads (and mushy peas everywhere!), so why not coleslaw with pizza?

[identity profile] tsukara.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's one of those tourist-trap foods. "Here, try the 'local delicacy', heh heh heh."

[identity profile] fairygnomes.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
I've never had (or indeed, been offered) coleslaw with a pizza. With a burger in a restaurant yes. but not pizza. KFC try to make you eat it with everything though.

[identity profile] misssimm.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
Um I know you can order it separately, but on a pizza? I've never seen any of the main places over here offer that as an option!

[identity profile] nel-ani.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
Coleslaw *on* the pizza?

[identity profile] asgaja.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm adding my vote to the whole regional thing but then again we usually have a type of coleslaw with our pizzas here in Sweden too.. and although it might seem odd, it is really kind of good.

[identity profile] rjrog77.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)

I like pigs' trotters well enough, but I'm not sure I'd eat them pickled (the idea of that turns my stomach, frankly).

I'm not a coleslaw fan at all, me; I vastly prefer potato salad. Probably the Irish in me there rebelling against the English part ;)

[identity profile] rjrog77.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)

Coleslaw with a pizza? Sure; coleslaw on a pizza? Not so much.

Then again, I'm one for bacon, cheese and strawberry jam sandwiches, so what do I know about disgusting combinations? ;)
