Me: Uh... Oh! Betcha a "Pepperoni Feast" is something like "Toad in a Hole in a Log Next to a Mushroom." The British are adorable.

Pizza Girl: [arrives]

Me: [thinks nothing of it]

[a day later as David Johnson is babbling about the stock market and the banking scandal in France...]

Me: WAIT. PIZZA AND COLESLAW???

So. Is this a British thing? Or is Ianto off his nut?

Off his nut.

I adore coleslaw, but not with pizza omg!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, GOOD. Because EW!!

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
haha. I never noticed that!

My vote goes to it being a British thing. When I spent a few weeks over in Britain a couple of summers ago, I noticed that they serve coleslaw as a side to dishes WAY more than we do in the states.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I never knew! I always think of it as this big Southern thing, and something they throw at you at KFC, but beyond that...

While I don't eat it EVER, Coleslaw is often served with Pizza over here yeah.

It's not the only dubious side-dish that we Brit's apparently like with our pizza, some of it is mind boggling.

These people put corn on their pizza. And tuna. Coleslaw as a side item sounds almost normal after that.

(I mean, as normal as cabbage, vinegar, sugar, and mayonaise slopped together can. UGH.)

EEP! Although...I do admit I like shrimp pesto pizza. Or there's this one with prosciutto and artichoke hearts that I love. MMMMMM.

Ha! I didn't even think about that! But then, after Japan, nothing pizza related surprises me. (And I will never use "pointing to the menu" as an effective communication tool again!)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
HA! Well yeah. On the global scale of things, coleslaw as a pizza side: not that weird.

[identity profile] principia-coh.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Sugared popcorn, ketchup that is either a thick red sugar solution or dyed vinegar, candies that primarily feature almonds not having, well, almonds, the aforementioned corn (maize) on pizza, french fry sandwiches, meatballs wrapped in intestines, eels stewed in their own ick and left to sit there, puddings and sausages featuring blood as the main ingredient... and coleslaw with pizza is strange to you?

Which is not to say I don't enjoy some of the above (I like kettle corn, which is pretty sugary, and chip butties sound intriguing if horrid for you), but still.

Of course, we eat some weird crap in this country (mmm, mmm, pickled pigs' feet... would you like that spicy or mild?), so I'd be interested to hear what horrifies a Brit.

As to the matter of coleslaw on barbecue, when it's in the correct combination of type of coleslaw, type of 'cue and quality of roll, it's a really good combination. Serving large-chunk, wet, mayonnaise-based sweet coleslaw on St. Louis-style barbecue with a hamburger bun is a disaster waiting to happen.

[identity profile] ginamak.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, now, we do french fry po-boys in New Orleans, so that's not too weird.

Then again, I've never actually seen anyone eat one.

I've never had (or indeed, been offered) coleslaw with a pizza. With a burger in a restaurant yes. but not pizza. KFC try to make you eat it with everything though.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I've ever seen it even offered with burgers before. Well...maybe in a sit-down restaurant if they have a large number of sides to choose from.

[identity profile] misssimm.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
Um I know you can order it separately, but on a pizza? I've never seen any of the main places over here offer that as an option!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I was boggling about it being a side to pizza actually. :D Your strange ways frighten and confuse me!

Coleslaw *on* the pizza?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Nonono. Just as a side. But that's pretty foreign to me. In my mind, coleslaw shows up at outdoor BBQs and KFC, and that's about it. :D

I'm adding my vote to the whole regional thing but then again we usually have a type of coleslaw with our pizzas here in Sweden too.. and although it might seem odd, it is really kind of good.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's the type of coleslaw I'm used to that's throwing me. Is it mayo-based?

Coleslaw with a pizza? Sure; coleslaw on a pizza? Not so much.

Then again, I'm one for bacon, cheese and strawberry jam sandwiches, so what do I know about disgusting combinations? ;)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I started to ew at that, but then realized I'd take maple syrup on bacon or sausage. It's probably not much different.

I very rarely have pizza takeaway, but he few times I have had it, I vaguely remember there being the option of a little tub of 'side order'. Where 'side order' could include coleslaw. I'd never contemplate having it on my pizza tho.

OK, I went and did some research, read: 30 sec with google looking for Domino's Pizza website. The link goes straight to their 'food' page (where coleslaw is served as a 'dip'). Domino's is the most well known/widespread (as far as I'm aware) pizza take away place, so I figure it's pretty representative. To see our pizza restaurant-ness, Pizza Hut is the best option. Again, it's the most popular/widespread sit-in pizza place. The only other 'pizza' restaurant I can think of is Di Maggios. However, Di Maggios is what I'd class a restaurant (where one would make reservations and is somewhere where one would Go Out To Dinner) whereas I'd say that while Pizza Hut is classier than, say, McDonalds, it's not quite at the level of Somewhere Nice For Dinner (ie Di Maggios), if that makes sense.

Thus endeth more than you even wanted to know about pizzas in the UK. *g*

[identity profile] tripocket.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. So I checked the Domino's menu here in the US..and the only sides they show on the web are bread sticks and such. The Pizza Hut here serves all kinds of stuff, and I think I recall slaw on the menu there.

I prefer my pizza with a side of beer!

Yeah, that we do. Can I offer you a corn dog? :D

[identity profile] selenityshiroi.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmm...coleslaw.

I like coleslaw, and I don't normally like mayonaise products (or any condiment products, to be precise). And, yes, we would have it with pizza. Or KFC. Or chips. Not on, just with. Very much a side dish.

Normally, though, you get it with salad or barbeque foods.

Also, seeing a little hint of pizza topic squick in the comments, my favourite pizza is the Domino's full house pizza: Pepperoni, ham, ground beef, pineapple, sweetcorn, onions, mushrooms, green peppers, cheese...yum.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-26 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'd be willing to give corn a try on pizza. We do already have it in a lot of stuff around here - mainly Mexican dishes which you can't go two feet in San Diego without tripping over.
