Torchwood again. (At least Lost is on tonight, so I'll finally have something new.)

Did someone already try and explain this to me? And it just sunk in now after watching the latest Torchwood? I finally get why Jack refuses to talk about the Doctor with the others.

Seeing 1918 Torchwood made this click for me. Torchwood was founded as this anti-Doctor organization. They're very aware of him, and pretty much think of him as both a legend and public enemy number one. (See Yyvonne in AoG/Doomsday.) And after the Battle of Canary WharfTM? Who knows. Some might even blame the Doctor for what happened. (Ianto.)

And for the Torchwood gang to find out that Jack's been running around with the Doctor? That's a can of worms right there.

However, I still kinda want these people to meet the Doctor. Wouldn't mind at all if they all had cameos in the DW S4 finale. Although, judging by the death-glare Jack got from the Doctor when he found out he was working for Torchwood, they might not be getting the warmest greeting by the Doctor.

ETA: DW S4 spoilers in the comments.

ETA2: I don't want to spam the flist with yet another post, so when exactly is Martha due to show up? *WAITS* And...are we going to be experiencing some sort of weird time thing? I thought the spoilers had Martha coming in as a full-fledged Doctor and working for UNIT. Which, you know, would take a while for her yet considering she was still a doctor-in-training on Doctor Who. But really no time seems to have passed between DW S3 and Torchwood S2. Or very little time - a couple of months at the most?

I remember reading something about the Gwen actress saying something about Martha being better at her job than Owen, which... I don't really care who's better at being a doctor, but in order for me to believe that, I need to know that Martha's actually spent some time actually being a doctor before popping up in Torchwood.

Eh, I'm still really looking forward to seeing her on Torchwood, which is a complete 180 from Doctor Who where I pretty much got to the point of writing her character off from severe lack of character development. (I need a whole lot more for me to be interested in a character than simply being "awesome.") But she finally got some in Sound of Drums and LotTL and I'm much more interested in her now. Depending on what they do with her in Torchwood and S4, they might even turn me into a Martha fangirl.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Torchwood found Rose first, though? That would be two words colliding in a heartbeat. Hee.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be completely plausible to me considering that Rose works for the AU!Torchwood. And would go a looong way make the Doctor see that it's not a Pit of Evil. Pit of Sex, yes...

[identity profile] leighleighla.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor Doctor, walking in on the pit of sex...aka: Jack's office.

Doctor: *walks in, blinks. Walks back out* Yep. Shoulda guessed. JACK!
Jack: Give me five more minutes!
Doctor: *sighs*

HA!! That would be it exactly!

I really think something along this line is going to happen. You figure Rose must use her Torchwood resources to get back to her universe. It would make sense if she pops up near Jack's Torchwood, wouldn't it?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering that they've been using the Rift to introduce every kind of new element in the show, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if it was involved in Rose's return.

(Heh, and now I'm picturing lots of "I swear I only bumped her!" going on back when they were all together.)

There would be much stammering and possibly Jack even pointing at the Doctor and yelling "You left me at the Gamestation!" trying to deflect the conversation. Which would of course lead to a series of "What's!" from Rose, and then the Doctor stammering, and is would be brilliant! And Jack, and the Doctor, and Rose would all be together again!

Re: *cackles*

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I also hope that from Rose there would be a lot of, "How many times did I ask you about him? And you left him???" And maybe she'd actually cause him to apologize to Jack or something crazy like that.

And then they'd all be together again in Series 5! *cough*

Yes! And he'd tried to insist that it was entirely plausible that Jack would have wanted to stay behind and rebuild the Earth. And Rose would be cross, and be distinctly NOT responsive to his request for a hug, until he reluctantly apologized, so then he would, at which point there would be a group hug. And life would be good.

Until the whole "immortality" thing got brought up of course...

I'm just waiting for them to start blaming the Rift on completely normal things.

Gwen: "Wait, why has this week-old bread gone stale?"
Jack: "Fluctuations in yeast stability caused by the Rift."

Owen: "Why do I have trouble picking up women today?"
Ianto: "Probably the Rift. Tosh said it might be absorbing pheromones from people at random."

Tosh: "Why am I Asian?"
All: "It's the Rift."

Yeah, I'd never really given it much thought before. And it's very cool to see past!Torchwood. I mean, cognitively we know that it's been around since Queen Vic founded it, but actually seeing it is a completely different story that really helps you get it.

*wonders if there was as much sex going on at Torchwood in 1918*

And while Rose and Jack meeting first is a squeeful idea, I kind of think that maybe she might get a bit freaked out at the "omg I maded you immortal by accident" thing. Which would be sad. :C

I'm sure there was. Just everyone wore hats.

Yeah, I think that would very much be a part of it. I'm curious how Jack views Rose now. Is he now bitter towards her? Forgiving? I'm not sure we can say for sure.

[identity profile] tsukara.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)

Durng the sex? Hawt. :D

Is he now bitter towards her? Forgiving? I'm not sure we can say for sure.

I almost wonder if he ever blamed her. I mean, at first he had no idea what happened, just that he was dead and then he wasn't and the Doctor was leaving and he put the pieces together and blamed the Doctor (because he didn't even know that Rose had come back).

And when he found out in Utopia? I don't know. A part of me wonders if maybe he never blamed her, because at that point he'd somewhat accepted that there's nothing he can do and there's nothing the Doctor can do, so what's the point in blaming people? I think they'll probably have Rose and Jack be all happy when they meet. But it's be an interesting idea to explore in fanfiction.

As for your second ETA? I'm hoping to like Martha a lot more than I did in DW. I'm reall optimistic about it. Which...may not be the best attitude to go into anything TW with, but! It has been better this season.

I kinda have the feeling that Rose never factored into Jack's blame. Well, maybe he had a small resentment going against her since no one ever came back for him. But that probably flew out the window when he thought she'd died.

Could well be. And the way the Doctor explained it to Jack, it wasn't intentional on Rose's part.

But...who knows how he'll feel after he's had a while to think about it.

I'm really optimistic about it as well. There were things I liked about her and things I didn't in DW - one of the things I didn't like was when she'd get that pout going. And there shouldn't be any of that in Torchwood, so WOO!

[identity profile] tsukara.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)

Yowch. That alone had to have thrown any thoughts of blaming her rigt out the window.

Yeah--she's got no Doctor to moon over here. That's got to be a plus of some kind...

Episode 5... I think?

Got to be at least a few months, otherwise the TW team wouldn't have been so pissed at Jack and they wouldn't have had time to bond so well.

You know, I'm not that clear on the doctor-making process in the U.S., let alone the UK, and not really sure where Martha was - although she seemed very much at the student level yet, following a doctor around in S&J - but it seems like she'd need a couple of years to get that whole doctor thing accomplished.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)

Yeah, I don't know either. I know that I have a post somewhere in my journal where people were explaining UK doctor-making processes to me, but I can't find it right now. It did seem to be somewhat different than the usual US process which I think goes something like this: 4 years undergrad, 3 years med school, 1 year internship, several years of residency. I think (I mostly learned the above from medical shows on TV, hah).

It still seems more than a bit unlikely that she's already an official doctor, though.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
So...she probably was an intern? Because of the following the doctor around - which is what they did on Scrubs. All my medical knowledge comes from Scrubs.

Even if she was at the end of being an intern, she'd still need to do her residency for a few years. Unless UNIT has some sort of program... Hmm. Guess we'll have to see.

Oh, unless I'm mixing up the UNIT thing with Doctor Who. From what I understand about S4, some time will have passed between VotD and the first episode, in which case she could be a full doctor and UNIT person by then.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's what I'm saying. Based on that post I still can't find, the UK process is significantly different in ways that I can't remember right now.

From what I understand about S4, some time will have passed between VotD and the first episode, in which case she could be a full doctor and UNIT person by then.

What I'm wondering about that is whether "some time" means for everyone, or just for the Doctor. I mean, it's easy enough for him to have spent months or years off elsewhere, and then have him come back episode 1 series 4 and have it be the New Year's Day just after VotD happened (I refuse to even guess what year VotD actually took place in; the timeline's all mucked up).

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-01-31 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)

It could be right after for the Doctor, but not for everyone else. I'd prefer it that way, really. I hate the thought of him doing the self-imposed alone thing for very long. Yeah, he tries it all the time, but I don't want him to get away with it. He'll just get weird...er.

Well, we know that it took place the next Christmas after TRB, and two Christmases after tCI, based off that on old dude at the newspaper stand. He said since there were invasions the last two Christmases, people were staying out of London. Q.E.D...Right?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-01 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. That's right.

Yeah, I think your explanation for why he doesn't talk about The Doctor makes sense...but then I kinda get the feeling this group don't know all that much about their organization, at least not anyone except Ianto. And they can all be idiots, but it seems weird to me that if they did know about The Doctor they wouldn't at least question Jack a bit about this elusive Doctor he keeps talking about. Especially considering they'd have to know about Time Travel and at least before they knew about the Time Agency maybe The Doctor and the TARDIS would have been a good explanation as to why Jack as out of his own time.

Honestly, it all just kinda fits into the glaring plot holes this show has always, and will always have. You can't question it too much or it all falls apart.

I am looking forward to seeing what they do with Martha on TW, but I agree the better at being a doctor then Owen thing seems ridiculous. Maybe you will be a Martha fangirl if they improve things. It is quite possible to fangirl both Rose and Martha despite what fandom thinks.
