Torchwood

And somehow I managed to get in a DW S4 casting spoiler.

  • So the big hunk of meat turns out to be whale-ish, and not some giant Holstein-colored cube. Oh, the alien whale was decent. Just not as cool a giant Holstein-colored cube. One that moos. It's probably very very good I don't run any sci-fi shows.

  • Gwen and Rhys got some good dialog and Jack got some horrible dialog. (Well, he did get a couple of really funny lines.) But there were a few very cringe-worthy ones as well. There's been some clunky dialog in the past, but this is the first time I was facepalming.

  • How happy am I that Rhys now knows about Torchwood and his memory hasn't been erased? Very happy. When Gwen was talking about protecting Rhys as the reason for keeping the secret, I kept wondering how exactly Rhys would be protected. Oh, it'd make him less worried, so I suppose protecting him in that way. But beyond that, there's really no harm in him knowing from what I could see. Him being suspicious and not knowing is what wound up putting him in danger. Sure he could blab stuff to people, but who would believe him? Anyway, I was afraid they'd fall into that tired formula of having the S.O. being perpetually kept in the dark, but they didn't! Woo!

  • I'm sorry, but I don't really get the whole Jack/Gwen thing that was going on in this episode. I mean, you really can't expect me to believe that he's now in love with Gwen, can you? Or does he just want what she has? What happened to him always telling her to hold on to her outside life? What happened to Ianto? Was he just a quick shag? Not that I need Jack to be OTP-ish with anyone, just I'm feeling a bit of character continuity whiplash at the moment.

  • And speaking of continuity whiplash, why did we suddenly see compassionate Jack? What prompted that? Like Gwen said - "You do have a heart!" What made Jack suddenly become emotionally involved with the whale, when he was cold as ice to the sleeper agent just recently? GIVE US MORE JACK INSIGHT, YOU HOSEBEASTS! THE MYSTERY!MAN THING IS GETTING FRUSTRATING! At least it looks like we'll finally get something of Jack next week though. Something big.

  • And speaking of next week, might these people (nerdy!Owen and so on) be from a parallel world? *BOUNCE* Oh, it'll probably have absolutely nothing to do with That Certain S4 Casting SpoilerTM, but it still makes me bounce. Because perhaps other Torchwoods have been messing around with AUs. \o/

I think I nearly spit out my drink when Jack said, ""My poor friend, what have they done to you?" xD Please don't go all Face of Boe on me, Jack. I still haven't come to terms with it.

AHHHHH! *has flashbacks*

Please don't go all Face of Boe on me, Jack. I still haven't come to terms with it.

Mwah. Well, you *do* see him looking out from behind the glass in his office a lot. :D

Well, you *do* see him looking out from behind the glass in his office a lot. :D

BWHAHA! Now every time I see him looking out from behind glass I'm just going to laugh.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
*snort* You know, I think it would've been fine as just, "What have they done to you?"

It's the "My poor friend" part that put it over the top, unfortunately. I cringed, and I'm usually the last to complain about dialog.

[identity profile] fauxkaren.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I've decided that it's a lot easier on myself to not watch TW for the characters and relationships. It'll only drive me insane in the end. haha. I've discovered that it's a lot more fun to just revel in the crack that is Torchwood. So I love the Jack maybe having a thing for Gwen. It adds to the ridiculousness of it all. :D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
HEH. It definitely is one more "WTF" when it comes to Torchwood. :D

[identity profile] leighleighla.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely some eye-rolling moments for Jack this ep. *shakes head*

I want more Jack! I want more development, dammit!

I don't get the Gwen/Jack thing either. It doesn't make sense, and I kind of hate her anyways. *shakes head*

I was kind of disappointed last night. I was REALLY hoping the meat was human and the runners were aliens...*pout* I want another cannibalism ep!!

*NODS*

I know this is an ensemble show, but to me Jack > everyone else. But character development-wise, everyone else > Jack.

I don't get the Gwen/Jack thing either. It doesn't make sense, and I kind of hate her anyways. *shakes head*

Also in this realm, I still don't get Gwen's "no one else will have me" when she told Jack she was marrying Rhys. Where'd that come from?

I agree that Jack's hidden heart of gold was a little...okay, then, but I think Jack/Gwen makes sense. Although it's Torchwood, so it could always be done better. First, he's Jack, so he'd rather have Ianto AND Gwen. And then, I think, they have cast his relationship with Gwen from the first in sort of the Nine/Rose mold. He's drawn to her enthusiasm and good heart. And like Rose and the Doctor, she's supposed to inspire him to be better person, however hackneyed that emotion is. I do think they're neglecting to let us know how Ianto feels about this, though.

Just not as cool a giant Holstein-colored cube. One that moos.

Hee. Your mind is a fearsome, yet awesome, place.

But there were a few very cringe-worthy ones as well. There's been some clunky dialog in the past, but this is the first time I was facepalming.

John Barrowman is all that is charming and pretty, but he cannot elevate bad dialogue. He makes it WORSE, somehow.

I agree that Jack's hidden heart of gold was a little...okay, then, but I think Jack/Gwen makes sense.

Okay, put in that context, it *sorta* makes a bit more sense. Sorta. Although it's more being able to see the formula, but not the practical application of it.

Hee. Your mind is a fearsome, yet awesome, place.

I was thinking, "Cow cube! Cow cube! Cow cube! Oh. Whale. That's all right, I guess."

John Barrowman is all that is charming and pretty, but he cannot elevate bad dialogue. He makes it WORSE, somehow.

I hate to be harsh on him because I adore him, but YES.

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
As to Gwen/Jack, yes, that. Also, I think there's a part of him that wants them all for himself, even if he's only shagging 1/4 of them. I think he's a bit possessive.

John Barrowman is all that is charming and pretty, but he cannot elevate bad dialogue. He makes it WORSE, somehow.

You know, people complain on him for his theater-acting background, and most of the time I just roll my eyes, but I kind of feel like this is the one area where those complainers are a little bit right. Ack.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, I think there's a part of him that wants them all for himself, even if he's only shagging 1/4 of them. I think he's a bit possessive.

Hmmm. Maybe? Arg! They need to give us SOMETHING from inside Jack's head.

[identity profile] honorh.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
Obviously, the only solution is for him to shag them all. Torchwood team bonding=orgy!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That might do it.

[identity profile] buckbeakbabie.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the compassionate!Jack was showing off in front of Rhys. "look, Gwen! I cans do the caring thing!"

side note: typed thong just then. Jack can also do the caring thong, I am sure....

I like the Jack/Gwen. *shrugs* Well, I prefer Jack/Gwen/Ianto. :D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the compassionate!Jack was showing off in front of Rhys. "look, Gwen! I cans do the caring thing!"

Hoo boy. I hope not, but you could be right.

side note: typed thong just then. Jack can also do the caring thong, I am sure....

HA!! Very fitting.

I like the Jack/Gwen. *shrugs* Well, I prefer Jack/Gwen/Ianto. :D

I don't necessarily hate Jack/Gwen (I don't really love or hate any of the relationships on the show), but I don't really get it.

[identity profile] javabreeze.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Jack and Gwen frustrate me. I just roll my eyes anytime they "somewhat declare their love for each other but don't." I buy Ianto and Jack way more than I can buy Jack and Gwen.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Thinking about this some more, I think the problem is that they're trying to do UST. UST with Jack Harkness, which is sort of madness. The only way they can do that is with someone who's off-limits. But it's more than UST since it seems like Jack wants more than just a shag. I don't know. I just don't understand it.

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hm I think they're building to Jack/Gwen, but I honestly don't see a lot of Jack - > Gwen as a romance just yet. I mostly just read him as not wanting to lose her when she was threatening to leave, retcon or no.
Edited 2008-02-07 19:30 (UTC)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there was that whole looking at Jack while she was kissing Rhys, and lots of other things as well.

Eh, maybe they are going towards a Jack/Gwen affair. I can't imagine that it'd last that long, and I think she'll hang on to Rhys through it. She's done it before.

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they're heading there, I just don't think that Jack is really there. It helps that JB talked about how he didn't think Jack/Gwen was romantic. I do think it's going there - I just think his feelings are clear cut and his need for Gwen doesn't have to be romantic.

...I think Rhys is going to die. :(

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That would kinda suck.

Although, I have this pet theory that Gwen will wind up exactly like everyone else on Torchwood. We didn't see the others' descents, but we're seeing hers.

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want him to go.

I think she will too. :p

[identity profile] velvet4269.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I think, in part, Jack feels responsible for Gwen. Sure there's the whole UST thing (good lord, that boy can teach me how to shoot a gun *any day* if it's going to be like *that*), but I think if they ever *did* do anything with it, I'd be disappointed. Gwen's just not good enough for Jack.

[identity profile] a-white-rain.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Gwen's just not good enough for Jack.
Yeah that argument is ALWAYS lose. Sorry. Love isn't a boss battle.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You probably have something with the feeling responsible thing. They did bring up her recruitment in this episode.

[identity profile] velvet4269.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I also have to wonder (after reading more comments - mind you, still haven't seen the ep yet ...) just how much of Rose Jack sees in Gwen. Gwen's all a bit naive, when you get right down to it. The rest of the group has been doing this longer, they've had time to acclimate to the weirdness that is out there. But Gwen? Gwen still tries to see the best in almost everyone ...

Makes me wonder, too, how she'd react to The Master ...

[identity profile] doctor-addict.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
But you see, I forgive this episode everything just for Jack saying

"THIS IS QUITE HOMO-EROTIC"

I nearly died laughing.

And Ianto snark is FTW

But plot, consistent chracter development? No chance

;-)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"THIS IS QUITE HOMO-EROTIC"

I LOVED THAT LINE! I had to watch it twice. :D

And Ianto snark is FTW

Was he snarky in this one? I can't remember.

But plot, consistent chracter development? No chance

It's probably is a sign of madness to keep expecting this from Torchwood, isn't it?

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Was he snarky in this one? I can't remember.

Where they're talking about how the beast keeps growing, and Tosh is all, "we could feed the world", Ianto replies, "We could release a single."

Also, Jack asks him, "Do I show off?" and Ianto replies, "Just a bit."

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh right.

[identity profile] doctor-addict.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's probably is a sign of madness to keep expecting this from Torchwood, isn't it?

Perhaps. But if it continues to go down the route of being a complete spoof of itself I will keep watching. It's complete and total crak and I love it!!!

[identity profile] grbggrl.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The whole Jack/Gwen thing drives me crazy. It's one thing to have him be attracted to her, and to make it obvious that they've slept togther (the whole "bedside manner" conversation in 2.2)...but in love with her? So what, now Jack's in love with The Doctor, Gwen, and Ianto (and probably Rose too). Oh, and maybe Captain John. And the original Captain Jack. OK.

I always saw the "dancing with anyone thing" as he'd shag anyone, not that he falls in love with everyone he shags. Gah. Just stop it. already.

I feel like they're forcing the Gwen/Jack thing on us and I don't like it. Ianto/Jack or Gwen/Jack...if it's going to be love and not just shagging fucking pick one and stick to it already. And as Ianto/Jack seems to work a lot better and not feel forced, lets go with that one. Gwen & Jack should be more brother & sister IMO...or just best friends with some sexual tension thrown in for fun. I could handle that.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)

*snickers*

You know, I could buy that Jack would want to be geniunily in love with someone for once, but they really have to show me that he wants that. And not by having him stand in his office gazing through the window either. I'm not smart enough to deduce that.

I always saw the "dancing with anyone thing" as he'd shag anyone, not that he falls in love with everyone he shags. Gah. Just stop it. already.

Right, I never saw that either. Hell, if that were the case, Jack would be a frickin MESS. I mean, even more than what he is on the show.

And as Ianto/Jack seems to work a lot better and not feel forced, lets go with that one.

I'd be more inclined in that direction as well, I think. Although with this episode I have to wonder if Jack's really all that interested in Ianto.

[identity profile] grbggrl.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 12:13 am (UTC)(link)

Yeah, I have no problem with Jack being genuinely in love with someone. But you tell me in DW that it's The Doctor. Then in 2.3 of Torchwood that it's Ianto. Then 2.4 is Gwen. OMG. Make up your mind! (and really...we all know it's The Doctor anyway, so whatevs...Torchwood doesn't matter, heh)

Right, I never saw that either. Hell, if that were the case, Jack would be a frickin MESS. I mean, even more than what he is on the show.

Oh god. Can you imagine? I've had enough angsty Jack. I don't need more thanks.

I'd be more inclined in that direction as well, I think. Although with this episode I have to wonder if Jack's really all that interested in Ianto.

And that's why I hate Torchwood half the time, in a nutshell. Last time Jack basically told Ianto he loved him. Now he basically tells Gwen he loves her IN FRONT OF IANTO. GAH! At least Ianto is so awesome that he seems okay with Jack not being a one man/woman kinda guy. 'Cause his face during the Gwen/Jack scene at the end was great.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
and really...we all know it's The Doctor anyway, so whatevs...Torchwood doesn't matter, heh

MWAH.

'Cause his face during the Gwen/Jack scene at the end was great.

I don't even remember Ianto being there! I might need to watch that again.

I'm sorry, but I don't really get the whole Jack/Gwen thing that was going on in this episode.

There has always been undertones between Jack and Gwen. From the beginning. I actually don't ship them, but I have the problems with Jack and Ianto that you have with Jack and Gwen. This season they are trying to build it up, but last season Ianto went from being totally in love with Lisa and blaming Jack for what happened to shagging him. It made no sense to me and I still can't get past it.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I still wouldn't be surprised if one day Ianto finally stabbed Jack in the back. :D But for some reason Jack/Gwen still confuses me more than Jack/Ianto. I probably need to stop thinking so hard.

[identity profile] nicachick007.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
A few points:
1) Because Rhys now knows, tsukara and I have to rewrite part of our song. Damn.

b... no, 2) As far as dialogue, there was a lot of shouting and Ianto being awesome with his one-liners again!

3) More on Ianto, HE WAS FREAKING AMAZING LAST NIGHT. He was all, I am Ianto Jones and I'm going to KEEL YOU. Ianto Jones is something of the love of my life.

4) HOW COULD YOU NOT SEE THE JACK/GWEN UST?!?!?!?! It was so tangible I almost died everytime they interacted. tsukie (I'm going to call her that for short now) and I were like, "You two. On the desk. NOW." But never got anything. UNTIL LAST NIGHT. FINALLY. We were screaming, because we were so glad it finally happened. Although Ianto had this look on his face like "Oh sh*t." Don't get me wrong, we love Jack/Ianto, but we don't want Jack to be in an OTP, because, well, dammit he's Captain Jack Harnkess. Thus, we propose an OT3: Ianto/Jack/Gwen! OT3 FTW!!!! And it was nice to see Jack getting his flirt on again last night. It's nice to have that back. But, yeah, we've been waiting for this A LONG TIME and were so ecstatic when it happened last night.

Ianto/Jack/Gwen! Ianto/Jack/Gwen! Ianto/Jack/Gwen! OT3 FTW!!!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-07 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)

People keep mentioning his one-liners in this episode, but I can't remember a single one! What were they?

HOW COULD YOU NOT SEE THE JACK/GWEN UST?!?!?!?!

I don't know! I keep focusing on trying to find cow cubes, apparently!

And it was nice to see Jack getting his flirt on again last night.

YES. I forgot to mention that, but flirting with random people? Need more of that, please. :D

[identity profile] grbggrl.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
The best one was "We could release a single" when they talked about saving the alien. I almost died.

People keep mentioning his one-liners in this episode, but I can't remember a single one! What were they?

The man is just a genius and I can't remember most of them either, but they were good. I'll have to go back and rewatch it. My favorites are still from Sleeper, I believe, especially when Owen goes, "So that's it then?... Let's all have sex." And Ianto just says, "And just when I thought the end of the world couldn't get any worse."

And Jack definitely needs to get back to the stage he was at where with the Doctor:
Jack, sexily to ... anything: Hi.
Doctor: STOP IT.
Jack: What? I was just saying hello.
Doctor: Same thing for you.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That one from Sleeper was hysterical. :D

I'm sorry, but I don't really get the whole Jack/Gwen thing that was going on in this episode

To be fair, I've never gotten the Jack/Gwen thing. I can see TPTB pushing it but I don't see it back up by anything other than Jack kind of cares for her (but mostly as a friend but because he's Jack having sexy feeling isn't much different from friendship) and Gwen wants to shag Jack. And...I just think he was angry at the end, he wouldn't cut her out but I *think* he really doesn't think it's a good idea. At least at the moment that's my theory.

And speaking of continuity whiplash, why did we suddenly see compassionate Jack?

Jack has horrid character continuity really. There's Angry!Jack and then there's Nice!Jack and really no explanation for what brings either out. I mean if he was skirting the border between light and dark and there were reasons why he went to one side over the other at any point it would be nice, but as is...horrid character continuity.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-02-08 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
And...I just think he was angry at the end, he wouldn't cut her out but I *think* he really doesn't think it's a good idea. At least at the moment that's my theory.

I took a look at that last part again, and I think it's a lot of that. More really than him wishing that Gwen wouldn't be with Rhys or something. And maybe a bit of wishing he had someone to share his secrets with.

There's Angry!Jack and then there's Nice!Jack and really no explanation for what brings either out.

Episode 2x13: we find out that there's been two Jacks in Torchwood all along. And TPTB run off to cackle madly.
