DVD Commentaries

I watched a TON of S6 and some S5 Stargate DVD commentaries this weekend. *smooches [livejournal.com profile] emry again*

I mainly stuck to the Peter DeLuise commentaries this weekend but did catch a few others. I remember laughing...but for the life of me what really sticks out is PdL saying something about the alpha-maleness of Jack & the Russian in The Tomb and them "peeing in a circle" which probably isn't exactly what he meant to say, but was so odd that I was laughing.

I love PdL's commentaries! He does point out very cool things and gives credit where credit is due, but he's also very self-mocking which makes it a whole lot of fun. Memento commentary (paraphrase) on the extras carrying props around: "On Prometheus, you really can't go anywhere without a metal briefcase. Because if you met up with someone who had *their* metal briefcase and you didn't, you couldn't fight back." *snicker* If he isn't a MST3K fan, he should be.

Thought it was really interesting that on the S6 commentaries, they talked about how they were able to do cut-away act breaks now. They could now skip and imply some action without cutting to a different scene because of the commercial breaks that they didn't have on Showtime. Well, *I* thought it was interesting.

The director's thingies were a *lot* of fun - the behind-the-scenes clips on several of the episodes. *g* AT all excited on the Other Guys that she got to smooch someone that didn't die; RDA & MS just hanging out on Abyss; RDA screwing up lines on Shadowplay; CJ flexing his muscles in The Cure and CN standing nearby with a "what the hell kind of show did I get myself into?" look on his face.

The commentaries and the behind-the-scenes left me with two overall impressions: 1) I'm even *more* impressed with the quality of the 22 episodes that they're able to put out every year. Some episodes' effects are on the level of major motion pictures - and they take years to complete. 2) Everyone has *way* too much fun on that show. *g*

ETA - did I catch this right? Not unlike the edict from on high that put an end to the snacking Jonas after about 5 eps in S6 - we won't see Siler with his big wrench anymore?? WAH!

Behind the scenes stuff... *sighs* I'm so jealous.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
I wish they were even longer, but *very* cool. :) Still would kill for a blooper reel though. *g*

[identity profile] nel-ani.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, yes... Why haven't they done one? Why why why?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea! I have heard the idea that sometimes shows/movies don't show bloopers because they'd feel it'd just be mocking the actors. But we luuurve these people! We'd be laughing *with* them! Really!

[identity profile] nel-ani.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think I've heard one of the actors from SG-1, can't remember whom at the moment, say something of the kind, but I agree! It's not mockage, it'll only make us adore them more!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:57 am (UTC)(link)

Maybe that's where I got it from.

but I agree! It's not mockage, it'll only make us adore them more!

Yes! The very little they showed of RDA messing up his lines did not make me think he was an idiot - just made me think he was adorable. ;)

[identity profile] nel-ani.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:59 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe that's where I got it from.

It's possible... I think it was from some older behind the scenes thing, which I've now completely forgotten where I found it, of course.

Yes! The very little they showed of RDA messing up his lines did not make me think he was an idiot - just made me think he was adorable. ;)

Exactly! There's nothing more charming than people willing to laugh at themselves, because it's as you said, one doesn't laugh at them then, one laughs with them.

Yeah (getting off on a tangent) - and that's what I love about the PdL commentaries. And even the fact that they're often self-mocking within the show itself. One of the commentaries talked about the humor of the show. Could you imagine it without the humor? Dry as a bone.

[identity profile] nel-ani.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, I'd really love to watch it with the PdL commentaries.

And I agree (again *G*) the humor gives the show the warmth that keep people coming back for more. *sigh* Ah, Stargate, shall I count the ways we love thee?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, Stargate, shall I count the ways we love thee?

*sigh* After watching all those I wanted to see the rest of S7 NOW. And S8 - want to see that NOW! *g*

*sigh* After watching all those I wanted to see the rest of S7 NOW. And S8 - want to see that NOW! *g*

I'm sorta savoring them myself. Watched Revisions and Lifeboat yesterday... *happy sigh*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooo! Just watched all of S6 & S7 again since I was taping for someone. *sigh* Just love this show!

[identity profile] alliesings.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
They could now skip and imply some action without cutting to a different scene because of the commercial breaks that they didn't have on Showtime. Well, *I* thought it was interesting.

I think that's interesting, too. I am really looking forward to seeing those DVDs some day.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
I can't wait to actually own the DVDs! Those purrty box sets. *sigh* Have to wait until January for S5 though (don't know why they wouldn't take advantage of Christmas). And who knows how long for S6. :( I just don't get that. Well, maybe it has something to do with syndication rights over here. Who knows.

[identity profile] splash-the-cat.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:36 am (UTC)(link)
They've confirmed January for S5? Whoo!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
Looks like the 20th! Yay! And the box is purple! Yay!

[identity profile] chiroho.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well, maybe it has something to do with syndication rights over here.

Unfortunately that's exactly what it has to do with, which means that we won't see S6 on DVD until late 2004 or early 2005. *sigh*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
Dammit! That really, really, really blows. :(

[identity profile] chiroho.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'm basing that on the fact that S5 just finished its syndication run in August/September, and the DVD's will be available in Jan. Syndication run is for a year, and as S6 just started on Fox . . .

*sigh*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:52 am (UTC)(link)
:-\ And they wonder why so many people get media through...other means.

[identity profile] chiroho.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
If they wonder, then they're definitely softer than I thought!

[identity profile] davebt.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Consider yourself lucky - we don't even have S2 available in a box set in Australia yet! And I really, really want the rest. Oh well I'll just have to buy from US.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
:( I just don't get that. Don't get that at all.

[identity profile] davebt.livejournal.com 2003-10-08 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I'm just hjoping that my brother is very generous this Christmas :)

[identity profile] yamadara.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
I usually watch the PdL commentaries first but Martin Wood also started to get some interesting quotes in there for commentaries. I especially think it's interesting when he talks about his thinking process vs the actor or writers' thinking processes.

And we SO need blooper reels. *thwacks MGM*

Heh. I was thinking about doing his next.

Yes yes yes!! *also thwacks*

Not unlike the edict from on high that put an end to the snacking Jonas after about 5 eps in S6 - we won't see Siler with his big wrench anymore?? WAH!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! :(

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
I KNOW! Pretty sure they alluded to that in one of the commentaries - Red Sky? :(

[identity profile] poohmusings.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh* It HAS been awhile since we saw Siler with his wrench ... :(

[identity profile] nel-ani.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, is the wrench missing or the wrench *and* Siler?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
Just the enormously large wrench. :(

[identity profile] nel-ani.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well, look at the bright side. At least Siler's still around.

And I'm sure the wrench is happy in its retirement, it has certainly earned it.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 10:29 am (UTC)(link)

True. Heh. He did one of the commentaries - I think for The Warrior. Maybe that's where they said Siler's wrench was MIA.

And I'm sure the wrench is happy in its retirement, it has certainly earned it.

Yeah - put out to pasture.

[identity profile] poohmusings.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
*thinks* I can't remember how much Siler we've seen in S7 ...

I remember lots of Siler in S4 (with his wrench -- heh). And some Siler in S5 ... But Siler in S6? S7? *sob* Siler is clearly off somewhere consoling his big wrench. ;)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
Siler is clearly off somewhere consoling his big wrench. ;)

*cough*

[identity profile] poohmusings.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
*snicker*

(I don't think we're capable of keeping any threads clean, Michelle. At least not where Siler's concerned. *g*)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently not. :D

[identity profile] alliesings.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I know that we've seen Siler in at least three S7 eps, and at least 2 of those times, he was in the infirmery.

[identity profile] alliesings.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 12:37 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] poohmusings.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's right! *smacks forehead* Can't believe I forgot those Siler-in-infirmary moments, especially since [livejournal.com profile] josephides and I had a long convo over them not too long ago.

But there was no wrench in sight during those S7 moments. Damn. :(

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Now that you say that - I kind of remember them saying he'd have injury type cameos this season. *g*

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
And it was so big! :(

[identity profile] poohmusings.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
I know! :'( It was a big and bad wrench, capable of conducting lots of lightening. ;)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2003-10-06 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
*snicker* You and your Jack/Siler/wrench fic! *g*
