[livejournal.com profile] josephides reminded me of this AIM chat today, one that took place after she'd linked this article almost three years ago now:

June 2005:
    Michelle: What's a dalek?
Jojo: You do not mean that.
    Michelle: No clue.
    Jojo: omg.
And then in July 2005, I decided to give this little Brit show a try...

(Also, if you've never heard about the kidnapped Dalek (story linked above,) go and be amused.)

:D

Waitwaitwait. So it was JOJO who turned you on to DW?!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
So really, I cannot be blamed for any of this.

[identity profile] poohmusings.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, let's not get carried away now. ;)

I swear to god I always think that's Princess Leia or a munchkin behind the Doctor's shoulder.

Really close! Random Shakespearean villager!

See, I remember a time when I didn't watch Doctor Who. But I cannot remember EVER not knowing what a Dalek is. I'm sure I've known about "EXTERMINATE" since I was tiny!

LOL at the story though. I want to know what happened to the poor Dalek now. And did Colin Baker rescue it? XD

Over here we're (well, most of "we") seriously clueless about the Doctor Who thing. I'd guess to say that most people over here are still clueless. Their loss!

Looks like they just gave it up. Bit of a letdown.

It's just kind of odd, because I'm entirely the wrong generation. Sure, my parents watched Who but not obsessively. I honestly have no clue how it was part of my life when the last episode was aired when I was a year old! XD

And at least the Dalek got taken home ;-)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably just part of the culture. Like not everyone has watched the original Star Trek, but some phrases have wormed their way into our language.

*pats the Dalek*

Well, there's an American Old School fan I know who was seriously shocked that people didn't know about Doctor Who. Apparently, we were all meant to be watching PBS at weird hours in the 70s and 80s. ;-)

HA! :D

[identity profile] selenityshiroi.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! Wookey Hole is near where I live! I assume they got it back and have a Dalek on display, which is now making me want to visit...which I never have thus far.

Yeay for DW, making me want to visit local landmarks.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, looks like they did get it back.

And how much do I love that you all have Doctor Who exhibits? I wanna go to one.

[identity profile] selenityshiroi.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, it was only at Wookey temporarally. Shame.

But a Dalek on Glastonbury Tor exterminating hippies is a storyline I want to see in 2010. *nods*

*SNORTS*

[identity profile] angst-angel.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, I remember those days. Discussing the actual pronunciation of "Dalek" and all that. :D

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I still mentally say day-lehk. Because of the accent and all. :D

That "dah" sound just never quite gets there.

BWAH. But hey, that's how it looks! :D

And aw, there used to be a time when I didn't know what a Dalek was, either. How times have changed. *g*

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I sometimes forget there are people who haven't been watching the Doctor for over 30 years.

Does that make me old???

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get to use that icon much. Only in the bestest of situations!

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Kinda makes me wonder what I'll be nuts about years from now that I have no clue of yet. Heh.

[identity profile] greenpear.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like you change fandoms as often as some people change their socks.

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Some people don't change their socks for years? EW!

[identity profile] beck-liz.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I had heard of Daleks, and the TARDIS, and the Doctor, due to fandom osmosis and my uncle who's been a fan for longer than I've been alive, but I wasn't sure what any of them actually were. :-)

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I might have recognized the TARDIS. I wouldn't have known what it was called, but I did see the opening credits of DW a time or two on PBS. And then immediately changed the channel because there had to be cartoons on somewhere.
