REALLY liked this episode a whole lot. They could have a lot more of that, thanks. (Although then they'd basically become the show Lost.) In my mind, they could have done this episode looooong ago, but I'm still happy we're getting it at all.

Poor Tosh. I don't think she's ever talked about her mother since then, has she? I wonder if she really was okay like Jack said. Also, Tosh is a hell of a lot smarter than I ever gathered from stuff before. She seemed the standard computer hacker, but if she's mentally redesigning flawed MoD designs so that they actually work... I want to see more super-genius Tosh.

I did NOT see that backstory coming for Owen. Normal guy, wanting to get married... This wasn't sexual-prowl Owen at ALL. But then she (I can't remember her name) had Death By Alien, and that was that. Hello, destructive-behavior Owen.
A few random thoughts:

All these stories tied together in that they were how each person got involved with Torchwood. We didn't need a Gwen flashback since we know about her. I'm wondering if some of this will come into play in the next episode. I was a bit surprised that this wasn't really a two-parter. You got a wee bit of setup for the next episode, but that was it. Not that they have to have a two-parter to finish out the series.
When Jack took over Torchwood, I'm really wondering what he was thinking in choosing the people he did. He's seen first-hand of Torchwood and madness, and to take people who were not healthy emotionally at the time... (To be fair though, he didn't really know with Ianto.) That's toying a bit with disaster. But maybe he thought they couldn't get any worse? I bet dollars to donuts he plucked up Suzie at a point in her life when she wasn't exactly secret-agent material too. Maybe Jack was changing his ways a bit with Gwen? Maybe someone with a bit more stability could weather it better.
So in the current Torchwood timeline (which is seriously making me dizzy), it's almost two years after Canary Wharf. But I'm betting that'll fit very nicely with Jack turning up on Doctor Who again, which should be almost two years since Doomsday.
Speaking of which, I'm dying to know how they're going to end Torchwood this year. We know Jack's going to be in the last episodes of Doctor Who again, so you'd almost think that we'd be hearing the TARDIS again. Or maybe a call from Martha saying she needs Jack's help. Whatever it is, I'll probably squee at it. :D
Grey - there are a few ways this could go. 1) It's not really Grey, but Spike's playing him. 2) Grey will get killed by the end. 3) Grey will become S3's new team member. 4) Grey will be lost again. 5) Grey will give a nice brotherly hug, and then zip back to the 51st century. Honestly...I don't really care much which it is. I'm not overly invested in the brother storyline. But damn! Spike's going all boiled bunny on Jack!

Same here. Tosh pwns all. I just wish we had seen more of this all series rather than her "character defining moment" of the series.

Oh, for temporarily grounding him? Or just his attitude in general? I understand the grounding him temporarily, but the attitude - it makes no sense.

It was a really good episode. It ties in with the memories the team focused on when Jack retconned them in Adam. They all came to him damaged (minus Gwen) and he could associate with that and at the same time see their potential. Gwen came along at a time when the team desperately needed new perspective and to realize it wasn't all about gadgets and alien life, that people mattered too. Which ties in well with what Andy said to Gwen in Adrift. Because like the rest of the team at different points, Gwen was starting to lose her humanity a bit.

BTW - Did you do a review of Adrift?

Though that certainly explains the Doctor's hint to Rose that 51st century folks are a bit more flexible. Perhaps humans were becoming endangered during that time period -- y'know with all the attacks by aliens and such -- and in order to compensate human pheromones kicked into high gear to attract a mate?

HA! I didn't even think about that! Could well be something like that - Jack's home seemed fairly simple and it seemed like there weren't that many of them around. Unless the pheromone thing was an optional bio-upgrade or something.

Awwww, good for them! I think if I had to choose out of all of them - boy, it'd be really tough, but I think I'd go with Blink.

I know I can't wait until the episode it really sucks that we have to wait two weeks. I will have to agree that this season has been really great. So I give Kudos to the writers for making it really interesting , sad, and funny at some points. I think when the season is over and it comes out on DVD I might actually buy it. ^-^

Me too! I was very meh about Tosh up until this episode, but now I'm way more interested in her character and I felt so bad for her about the whole situation with her mom.

I find this really interesting because I'd just finished reading The Twilight Streets TW book and they have a lot of Jack history in there about how he started working for Torchwood as a freelancer over a century ago and I thought at the time how cool that would be if this were true. Surprise surprise! They should stop telling writers about future plotlines really.

The TW lesbians freaked me out and made me laugh all at the same time, the younger one would definitely be on America's Most Wanted, psycho.

I've gone into all the Ianto stuff on my journal, but I loved this ep. And the jeans, the jeans were very distracting.

They were just so...psycho! That 1918 Torchwood team didn't seem to be unglued, although we only got a tiny bit of them.

Yeah it all fits, I mean the details were only minute, but I remembered there was a mention that they kept detailed records of what he got up to, that he worked freelance reluctantly, but it didn't go into detail about how he began with TW or how he ended up taking over and I only assume that's because the writer knew that detail would be filled in on the show. I normally don't consider books part of canon, but they were other details as well, like they talked about Gwen's up coming wedding and I think they mentioned Captain John. It's a really good book with a heavy Jack/Ianto bent and team stuff, good tertiary characters but it's All About Jack and what he gets up to, people he knows that we don't see.

The jeans need to return! Because then if there are crap plots, we would have the jeans to distract us (or maybe just me!).

Thank you. I was starting to wonder if I was the only one who has a hard time trusting Ianto. I really, really want to, but… it almost felt like he seduced his way onto the team. (I wouldn’t be surprised if he and Jack started sleeping together shortly thereafter.) And the writers seemed to stress the fact that he used to work for Torchwood One. (And that he’s the only one who did, which I wasn’t expecting.) Plus, I’m trying to handwave season one, but I can’t help thinking about what a complete shock “Cyberwoman” was. I had no idea that Ianto was hiding anything.

I do really like that Rose was front and center in Jack's mind. And it could be that it tempered the "kiss, then kill him thing." Jack knew what was what between the Doctor and Rose, and if she was dead then a manic reunion probably wouldn't be the best thing.

I don't think it's just you. From the very first episode we see that Jack just doesn't have tight control over his group. Jack's charismatic and someone they're loyal to, but he still can't manage people that well. Part of it is his inability to completely relate to them.

I think that door is really still open, in spite of how he's acted with Jack. The writers might never use that, deciding that everything really was resolved in S1, but they could unearth more secrets that Ianto's been keeping. It'd be interesting to someday find out that Torchwood One was rebuilt, and Ianto's been a mole. I'd like to think that Ianto would ultimately side with Jack and that team though.
