You know what's actually really good on the grill? Broccoli. Mmmmmm. I made some tonight and it turned out great. The steak on the other hand - it wasn't horrible, but it wasn't right either. I suck at grilling any kind of meat. I've even got an instant read thermometer. I still suck.

It's 9 p.m., but I think I might just go to bed. I feel exhausted even though I didn't do much this weekend. It's the heat.

Grilled salad (romaine lettuce heads work well) and grilled asparagus are also delish.

I've seen people doing that, but I've been skeptical. I need to try the lettuce thing this summer.

You know, I know this post is ancient by LJ standards, but on behalf of my CSA-acquired "What the heck are we going to do with four heads of lettuce?" family?

Thank you.

There are only so many garden salads one person can take.

Do you season your steak with anything? I use the absolute BEST rub in the universe and it makes steaks taste heavenly. I got the "recipe" from a chef I knew several years back.

Super easy -- you take seasoned salt (I use Lawry's), garlic powder, black pepper, and kosher salt ... generously sprinkle each spice on one side of your steak (the chef said, "it will look like it's too much, but it's not"), rub/press it in with your fingers, then flip the steak over and do the same on the other side. Then grill your steak in the usual way.

Try it next time and tell me if you don't absolutely love it! :D It will spoil you for having steak in any other way.

I use the Montreal seasoning, which is basically salt, pepper, bit of garlic, dill seeds and some correander. Mmmmmmm. Sounds pretty similar to what you use. (Lawry's probably has some similar spices.)

I can't imagine grilling steak without that seasoning. I even use it on the vegetables.

BBQ'd broccoli? Mmmmmmmmmm, I'll have to try that, thank you :)

I've got a grill basket, so I don't just set the broccoli directly on the grate. Pretty much like this:

Hmm. I must have a different one than that - people are talking about paint coming off and the directions say to handwash. Mine is tough as nails and I throw it in the dishwasher all the time. I've had it for years.

*peers at link pikkie*

I think I could cope with that - and I nosey'ed on your other comments and you just bung it on raw with olive oil. Mmmmmm.
I'm thinking a light sprinkling of seseme seeds as well and damnit, now I'm hungry :D

Yup. Olive oil and some seasonings. Sesame seeds could be good, but I'm wondering if they'd burn before it was done.

Grilled broccoli? Sounds interesting. I've never tried that, it never occurred to me. Did you precook it or just put it on raw?

[identity profile] mrv3000.livejournal.com 2008-05-19 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Just raw. I tossed it with a bit of olive oil first so it wouldn't stick, and also seasoned it. It gives off a bit of a nutty taste and is really good.

I'll have to try that. I like it roasted and this will add a nice smoky flavor.

That is why I make the hubby do all the grilling. It's what he was created for.

Guys tend to be useful like that.
