Odd question

My curiosity is getting to me. When I was watching the West Wing's inauguration episode(s) this past weekend, I noticed that all the guys were wearing round pins on their lapels. NOT a flag pin. Something round.

And then I happened to be flipping past Meet the Press and there were a couple of guys sitting there, one guy was wearing a flag pin, but the other guy had...something round!

What is this?

I *think* there are special pins made to celebrate the upcoming inauguration, and that's what they're wearing. I think. Don't quote me on it.

Hmm. Could be. I think that the guy wearing a flag pin was the Republican, and the guy wearing the round pin was a Democrat. :D

They're ID buttons. They identify a person as being a Congressman, or Senator, or some other elected post. I'm not sure if appointed positions have them, but I've always seen elected officials wear them at the state capitol.

EDIT: Oh, are you talking about the main cast? Then [livejournal.com profile] astrum_presul is probably right.

Oh! Huh! I wonder if that was the case on the West Wing - Chief of Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff, Communications Director and so on. All very much appointed positions.

See, I can't say for sure, since I've never met someone appointed. But I always assumed the buttons were half collectible ID badge/and half insurance that stupid interns don't mouth off to the wrong person, so I don't see why appointees wouldn't have them...I don't know.

Well in the fictional case, I've only seen them pop up in these episodes. Although sometimes they should have name tags for benefit of the interns. :D

Edit crossover! Yeah, the main cast was wearing them.
