zzzzzzz *snort snort* Whu? Canada's doing something? Political coup? Do we, like, need to send in military? We're good at that. Well, when I say 'good,' I mean we do it at the drop of a hat. Better watch it Canada. Before you know it, Bush will send in a few tanks. Just for the hell of it. And to get him some snowcones.
After a blissful existence, fanfic awards have apparently come to DW. *sobs* *needs various wienerdogs to hold me*
I'm on a mission through time from Muppet Labs. HEH. Under the codename Bad Wolf. HEH HEH!! Translation: there's this game Disneyland is doing that involves annual passholders, visiting DCA for clues and text messaging while in the park. I think I might go this weekend and brave the insane crowds there for the Candlelight thing. (I sang in that in high school, which was really cool, but the park will be packed by night.)

SO JEALOUS! The one they are doing at WDW (I'm going in less than a month!) is at Epcot and it's for Kim Possible. Muppets > well, most everything.
Politicians call it a coup, I call it fussing around and kicking the Tories to the curb - basically, in Canada, however gets the most reps elected forms the governement...except that sometimes, it's not a majority government, such as is the case here - and the other parties formed a coalition, which gives them the majority and they overthrew the current government (elected less than two months ago) over a vote of confidence and formed a new government. It's a bit more complicated than that, but yeah...
So...really don't care at the moment, though it makes me really happy to know we won't have a conservative government for the next four years.
I prefer the term "coalition" to the word "coup." I mean, it's perfectly legal in a parliamentary system and under our Constitution. Just because it's never happened before and might stretch the boundaries of legitimacy doesn't mean it's a government overthrow! Sort of, anyway! XD
Dude, Merlin has fanfic awards. That fandom is not even twelve weeks old! they have all these catagories that will have no entrants becaus ewhat do you know, no ones had time to write novel length fic yet!
After a blissful existence, fanfic awards have apparently come to DW. *sobs* *needs various wienerdogs to hold me*
It was bound to happen eventually. Who is much to big a fandom to avoid the desire to hand out prizes. And really how could this fandom resist a new opportunity for wank?? It would be unnatural.
Hey, wank only happens if people, you know, wank. I for one don't plan on wanking. At least not any more than I normally do. *shrug* It is what it is. Nice to see people who work very hard get wider exposure and all that.
But then again, I'm the big nerd on the playground with the kick ball going "Guuuyyssss can't we all be frieeeennddssss??? Let's play kickball then we will be BFFs!" And everyone points and laughs at me.
I love how TONS of people haven't heard of these until the past day or two. The person running them says they posted only once in 18 communities. But not a one was D/R focused because that's not her interest. Well, sorry, but, uh, a good chunk of the LJ fandom IS D/R focused. Shouldn't they have at least tried to get the word out? Contacted the_spdn or listed it in T&C maybe? I have no interest in general Who communities for much the same reason she has for no interest in D/R. Because I have no interest in interacting with that side of fandom. I love the show in it's entirety, just not the fandom. I'm partial to the D/R part only.
I'm not fond of awards anyway, the fact they are so skewed doesn't warm we to them.
Awwww! There's some sort of game they're testing out with annual passholders. I'm assuming it'll be available to everyone if it goes off well. To start out you needed to play these puzzle games on their site that involved researching clues. After you passed that, you got a sheet where you have to find the answers at DCA and you text Muppet Labs.
Oh, and I'm going to DEMAND stories from working at Disney World. :D
I still have wishy washy feelings about the fanfic awards... while the realistic part of me knows it turns into a popularity contest and wankfest, the cock-eyed optimist part of me wants to believe it's a good way to recognize some talented people and introduce some lesser knowns.
Yeah.
Of course, I wouldn't feel right voting unless I'd read all the entrants to truly compare and... sheesh.
Also what the heck, Canada? Should be a rather more polite coup than the one the Thai's are throwing.
1) Often the label is "Best _____" when "best" has nothing to do with it. If the vote is open to anyone, then it's which fic (or author) is the most popular. Period.
2) If you want to recognize a fic for excellence, rec it. Or give it your own award.** Don't make a subjective creative work compete against other subjective creative works in some beauty pageant.
3) At best there will be hurt feelings. At worst petty jealousy.
** Years ago I was in a group of people who gave out awards every few months to fics we thought were outstanding. No pitting them against other fics. It was a "you HAVE to read this" (none of our own fics allowed) and if everyone in the group agreed it deserved recognition, we'd make up a little award for it.
Fanfic awards? I don't think i've ever been happier to not get nominated. *phew* Not that I, you know, would. :|
I've done the fan awards thing and it's really a headache. And the drama that results - it doesn't make fandom a happy place. There's nothing worse than brused egos in fandom.
2) IDK what's going on in Canada. I think they decided that Obama was just so exciting down here they needed some excitement all up in there? Um...
Eeeeeep - I, perhaps in a sick and weird way, love awards.
1) The first time and only time I was nominated for a Potter story, it was by a person whom I didn't even know at the time. (He's become a LJ friend now.) And I knew his writing, enjoyed it, and knew how popular he was. So it was a dizzyingly little thrill to have someone pick something of mine and prop it up. But then, I always kind of get off on that sort of thing. Someone likes me! He really likes me!
2) I love the exposure. Additional people who would normally never consider reading you, find you in amongst of list of other stuff they like, so maybe they click the link and give you a try. Maybe they just don't normally hang out in the same haunts as you - so they missed your publication. Or maybe, the don't normally read Doctor/Rose, or especially TenII/Rose, but when it's put before them as something someone else recommends a good example of the genre, they might break from their normal preference for the time it takes to give you a read.
NOW I do fully appreciate that what usually happens is that people vote for the story they already recognize, and love from before. So, ultimately the person with the most friends, highest established readership, will win. So you can't put any emotion or stock into actually winning. And yes, it's sad that in that way it becomes s popularity contest. And one that many of us will never win because self-marketing is a skill that has always eluded us.
I don't know, maybe it's some deep inner psychological earmark that I carry. But I'm used to always being number 2 or number 3. And when you spend enough time in that shadow, you start to figure out how to make it work for you. You keep doing your thing, and when the big tree attracts other people to the shade, sometimes they notice you sitting there as well.
Maybe it's because I'm Canadian! Heh - you see what I did thar? Nice seg.
As for Canada - it's exactly like Survivor!!! Love that analogy. Personally, I'm just fascinated by the way they other parties have become so united in their hate of the Conservatives, that they are actually willing to band together. Because, believe me, there is NO love lost between the Liberals and the Block. And the fact that they are getting together on this, should be shocking. (Quick history - the Block are Quebec separatists. And a couple years ago the Liberals were blamed for essentially rigging a referendum on separation that the Block lost in the 1990s.)
The exposure part of it - that's probably the best thing about awards. I'll admit I kept my fics in awards for so long instead of actually pulling them is because of exposure. And then I start thinking that there's got to be a better way of giving fics exposure. One that doesn't involve anyone having to sit in anyone else's shadow. (Or fics having to sit in shadows.)
And for Canadian politics - I want someone to get voted out! The tribe has spoken! :D
I don't think it was deliberate beyond the sole person organising having expressed distaste for the ship, therefore wasn't a member of D/R ship communities. They said they didn't like people joining their comms just to pimp, so they weren't going to do it to the D/R communities.
Honestly? I think it was just really bad judgment. Nothing overtly malicious, just someone who assumed everyone in fandom would see things posted to the general communities. And that Jack/Ianto was the only ship big enough to warrant it's own catagory. Because that's their ship, I presume. It's very much a case of someone looking at fandom and assuming everyone else sees it the same way.
I'm all for recognizing fics and authors, just not in a cage-match format. Super-duper rec lists would be good. There was a site that used to do this concept: Bright Shiny Objects (http://mirrordance.net/recs/). I would have taken a BSO rec over a fic award any day.

I'm so happy that so many other people *points and laffs at you* write so much better than I.
